Wow! Knitting and now sewing! Learn to crochet and you'll be a triple winner! I enjoy all 3 crafts. Right now, I'm knitting socks, working on a scrap quilt and later I'll be crocheting some little wreaths to wear as a brooch. Great job!

Wow, I came for the knitting and now am fully invested in your sewing journey. It’s something that I want to learn, but I came to knitting from crochet and want to get the hang of it before picking up sewing. I appreciate you making this video and showing the progress and bumps along the way, it really helps to see the real life of it vs. the edited pretty version. Awesome job on the bags! They came out so well that I may just have to pick a kit up and give it a go.

LOL! Thanks for reminding me why I do not sew anymore. lol. The needle changes, jammed bobbins, the right tools not handy, the ironing etc. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you though! lol LOVE the finished projects.

I love watching your sewing journey. I only just started sewing this past spring and I love it so much. I’ve only made bags though and mess up a lot. But I actually just finished one that I really really love and may use the same measurements for future bags.

Great video Jonathan! A Juki sewing machine is what you need if you want to sew a lot of leather, I’ve never had any luck with any other home sewing machine, Bridget

Great job; I love your enthusiasm! I have had the field bag kit for a while, but you have inspired me to sew it up. I have been wanting the Merchant and Mills workbook forever, but the wonderful Mulberry Silks fabric store in my town, Carrboro, North Carolina, sells out as soon as they are in the shop. Last summer, I knit the Grrrlfriend market bag, which is very similar to PetiteKnits mesh outer shell. I made it out of linen, so the knitted straps are fine and sturdy, but I really like the look of your leather straps. I am dabbling a little into quilting, but only to make small things like placemats and project bags. Happy making!

Thank you for lovely new sewing episode. Those project bags looks just amazing. It was also nice to see that knitted bag get new life just by sewing those parts together again with sewing machine. Mending clothes is satisfying. It is just funny that one might be able to sew new one in less time it takes to repair old one. It is just that one can’t for example sew those favorite jeans. Not even if one uses same fabric and pattern. That’s why I mend my clothes even when it takes lot time.

Yey beware of the seam ripper they're real fabric killers.🤭 I like to pick up some stiches and then some 2-3 stiches circa 10 cm forward, and with the loose threat you unwind, you gentle drag it like you do when you do ruffles. With sensitive fabrics I prefer to catefully take up one stich by one stich with a needle and cut it with a tiny scissor. Thanks Jonathan - cute bags- love.🤗💝🤗

Wow these bags are brilliant Jonathan. Well done. Loved watching your progress. You should be very proud of your makes. Also loved your jumper with the pink edge. You are so right about the needles and right tools for the job. The right spools make a difference too. See you soon. 👏👏

When you use your seam ripper, the shorter tine with the ball should be on the bottom. The ball well prevent the ripper from stabbing the fabric underneath, where you can't see it. Sewed for too many decades, and tore too much fabric, before I learnt that little tip.

I made the Field Bag a couple of weeks ago after you told us about it. Very nice design, I omitted the handle and still need to get cords to finish it. I thought you'd need leather needles, my wife used to do leatherworking and she warned me that the needles are scary sharp, told me they'd hit bone if I stab myself which I've always hoped was mostly hyperbole... I'm a mumbler too!

I would never sew with leather that thick on a regular sewing machine. I great solution for what you’re doing there is to punch a hole and use a metal rivet, like what you use on jeans. Also, you can get leather needles but I’d only sew very thin leather on a home sewing machine. Hope you enjoy your sewing journey. There aren’t a lot of men’s sewing patterns but there is one excellent book on tailoring that you might find useful.

So much fun watching you sew. I am currently repairing jeans. I'm limited on time so I just rip the seams and cut out the front knee area and replace with new fabric of the same color and seam it back up.

I have been a sewist for 50 years and I tell you in complete honesty that your sewing skills are leapfrogging with each task!!! You just learned the MOST valuable lesson is using the right needle for each project. Go back to the clerk that recommended the leather needle (because she is a genius :-) and ask her to help you create a needle "stash" for yourself. The rule of thumb is to change needles after 8 hours of sewing, but I have always changed it at the beginning of each project and then every 8 hours spent on a project, Do not EVER put a used needle back in the packet-discard it. To prevent punctured fingers (ask me how I learned this 😞) wrap the used needle in scrap paper and secure with scotch tape before trashing it. I loved your book choices and the way you are progressing, I see you making finely tailored clothing. I have found "Couture Sewing Techniques, Revised and Updated" to be the BEST.. If you slowly incorporate the techniques into your regular projects you won't believe how your sewing skills will improve. That way when you want to make your trousers out of a Harris tweed or Irish linen, you'll be ready!! Making wonderful clothes from the beginning is the same as when you jumped head first into colorwork knitting when you were just a novice knitter...so be fearless. I believe in you and hope to see that you have made yourself a finely tailored overcoat within the next year or two. Eventually you will need a dress form_read: www.thecreativecurator.com/best-male-dress-forms-for-men/ The author of this blog is American so I suggest taht you make an appointment at a fine London tailor establishment and ask him to give you his best recommendation. I say make an appointment because that recognizes the value of his time and be sure to make a small purchase while you are there; maybe a tie to wear with your first custom tailored dress shirt!
