As a lifelong Duck fan/alum I've been familiar with Jonathan Smith since i was in high school. And despite what people might think east of the west coast - most Duck fans don't really hate on the Beavers TOO much. OrSt is looked at more like a redheaded younger stepbrother(when not playing eachother, often times Duck fans are rooting for the Beavs). Our truest most bitter rival are the Washington Huskies. That said - i think MSU made a good hire here. They're going outside of the defense-first Saban-tree they've stuck with for so long. Smith comes from the Mike Reilly/Dennis Erickson lineage & he'll definitely deliver the offense. Get used to seeing the jet sweep(the Beavers made that thing a serious weapon over many years). And the guy's a QB guru for sure. i also don't think MSU will need to worry about Smith getting into any trouble as far as NCAA violations go. Do i have some concerns? Yeah. To my knowledge he doesn't have a real established recruiting base in the midwest. And how will his coaching style fare in the big 10(but also how will UO, UW, UCLA, & USC fare as well)? No matter what, i think Sparty's gonna get a fun brand of football, win more games with Smith than Tucker, & even if Smith isn't there for too long at least the fan base will get the taste of the last few seasons out of their mouths. So good luck Smith & MSU.

I like how he was deliberate in his assistant coaching searches and his methodical approach to building his roster. I like everything so far. Very hopeful he is successful at MSU.

This will be an interesting year…Harbaugh is gone, JJ is in the pros, Smith is in and we actually have a quarterback that can play. Not to mention a defensive coordinator who seems to know his stuff. That’s what I like to see…so long as he’s willing to embrace change and not micromanage his staff, we may have a great and competitive program. Go green!

Big hands, and his teams are always excellent at ball security. Coincidence? I think not lol
