I'm so glad your knowledge of this kind of playing is being shared in the DC Music School courses! It's so important for preserving music history

Thanks so much. There's precious little educational material on non-Django swing playing, so I was honored to contribute!

Very lively picking and, yes, bright sound. With decent wired headphones, it sounds great, and I can clearly hear the location and sound of the backing guitar. Thank you!

Cool! Thanks for explaining the "skronch" chord. It seems you're smitten with the AEA R84A ribbon mic. 😀

The tone when you go to the single note soloing is crazy. It almost sounds electric!

Yeah, that guitar really jumps with single notes.

Great stuff, Jonathan, as always. Your listeners eagerly await the book of your transcribed arrangements.

There's actually a bunch of transcribed stuff in my three volume course at dc-musicschool.com - the third volume is mostly all chord melody stuff. Also check out jonathanstout.bandcamp.com for two tabs under the "merch" tab, and I've got two transcriptions for sale at soundslice.com as well a bunch of a free stuff.

Awesome! Can you tell more about this three-note voicing(F, Gb, Eb) over Eb tonic chord in the main theme? Sounds spicy!
@campusfive4 ай бұрын
I first found it used in a George Van Eps solo on "Cherry" from a Jess Stacy recording from 1950, and I've taken to calling it the "skronch" chord. Allan Reuss also played it in an unissued blues from the Peck's Bad Boys session as well. It's basically just a really "crunchy" way to play the tonic note over the tonic chord. So it's just a funky "Eb" voicing. "Spicy" is another good way to put it.

@@campusfive Wow, what a story! I really admire the way how you recreate the passion and joy of this music along with the historical background

@@campusfive I listened to Cherry afterward and just caught the two strikes of that chord that Van Eps threw in at the very end of his solo! I have you to thank for the introduction to that tune, it's very nice. Do you know who wrote that one?
