Hi Jon! I played a G&L S-500 for a few years. I later found a wonderful Legacy (more of a "Vintage" sounding vibe) and grabbed that. I owed both for a while, but found that the Legacy was the one that really spoke to me. I later sold the S-500. I'm having a hard time looking at that headstock shape..... being used to their older design. LOL!

Sounds fuller than a Fender. I have a Comanche Tribute for that reason. It makes my Fenders sound sick and anemic.

killer jon! it's kinda funny how black guards are popular with g&l now when like this era of looks (the mocha stain and black guard and pickups) is synonymous with like the bad era of fender (the 1970s) and it was BECAUSE leo left, but at the same time I ALSO JUST LIKE THE LOOK OF BLACK GUARDS!!! hah cheers p.s. i got my fullerton deluxe doheny a couple of weeks ago (in lake placid blue) and I love it!

Nice. Since the Skyhawk has the same electronics, I prefer the Skyhawk’s less “Fendery” early 80s body and pick guard.

Thanks for sharing John! What do you think of the modified CLF pickups compared to the ones in all other S500s? I got a Tribute S500 which I love but I'm keen to try out these it it's worth it and most of all the Donheny V12! They sound linked interesting pickups. Unfortunately they aren't sold separately on their parts site.

Hi Jon! thanks so much for your great video review, very helpful as always. Please, just one question, I have a G&L Legacy Tribute (made in indonesia) and I'm planning to change the Pickups. In terms of pickups only, would you recommend this CLF Research S-500 over the Suhr ML? Suhr are a bit more expensive, but the difference is not that big. Thanks a lot.

G&L makes some really nice affordable guitars. I tried to buy one from Musician's Friend that was the Stupid Deal of the Day. I couldn't get the website to work, and when I finally got it to work, the sale was over.... They wouldn't give me the deal, so I said forget it.....
