I picked up an early '87 G&L ASAT with the jumbo pickups. After nearly 30 years of playing, it blew my mind. I have more than 20+ guitars, and it is now my #1 guitar. I can't put it down. It is the telecaster perfected.

I've played almost nothing but Fenders for almost 30 years. Strats will always be my favorite guitars but I got on the tele train only in the last 8 years or so. I was so close to buying a Fender Tele until I picked up a G&L and played it for the first time. I ended up getting a Semi-Hollow- Bluesboy and haven't looked back. The feel of it along with the balanced sound of the pickups is, in my opinion, one of the best sounding Telecaster-style models out there. I don't know that I will ever switch back.

These guitars punch way above their weight class. I’ve had a 2003 Tribute Jr. (two P-90s (their 4285 & 4210), mahogany body), medium C 12” radius neck for awhile. Good working stiff’s guitar. I swapped in a pair of Seymour Duncans, and put a custom Musikraft neck on it. Left the hardware & electronics alone. I’d have liked to have seen the joy in Lee’s face had he put a P-90 through the Green Rhino I thought I spied on his pedal board.

I have 4 G&Ls ... they are, from far the best guitars for the value I have, and I have plenty of guitars ... from 150 euros (yes, some are good in that price range) to 3/4k (I have stopped buying guitars up to 1,5k euros ... it is no longer justified out of Luther guitars). The G&L Tribute series ... made in Indonesia but with US mics and mechanics ... and a luxury finish (roasted neck, locking tuners etc.) are just fantastic. The Strat Comanche is a killer but as well, the Fallout (what a versatile little and easy to play guitar !), the Asat Classic semi hollow ... in short, test one, you won't regret it and probably will buy others from that brand ...

I love, love, love my G&L guitars. I have the US Legacy Deluxe, US Will Ray Special (ASAY body with skull inlays, beefed up Comanche pickups and a B-Bender. I also have several of the Tribute series and they are fantastic guitars. I’ve never understood why they don’t get more attention. My only G&L I didn’t really bond with was the ASAT Deluxe. I wanted the 2 humbuckers but the pickups were just not that good, IMO. This had been 10 or more years so things may have changed with those pickups.
@valuedhumanoid65748 ай бұрын
I have the Fullerton Deluxe Comanche and it's a spectacular instrument. I own other Strats and I love them all, but the Comanche is G&L's version of the Strat with three single coils, but each p/u is staggered. three poles under the high strings, three under the low ones. It changed the whole tonality. Not sure how or why they're staggered but it works. And the bridge is my fave of all guitars. The only bridge as good as that one is the Super Vee Bladerunner aftermarket bridge. If you haven't tried one, they're so awesome. But the G&L build quality and attention to the smallest detail is on par with PRS and miles beyond modern Fender.

About 15 years ago, I was in Nashville staying at the home of Leon Rhoads, who was a guitarist for Earnest Tubbs, the house guitarist at the Grand Ol’ Opera for 42 years, and played on Hee Haw for 22 years. He had incredible guitars but the one he played at the opera every night was a G&L. He said it was his favorite guitar to play. That told me all I needed to know about G&L guitars. He and my father (who grew playing with Leon) were personal friends with Leo Fender in the early 50’s. Leo would come through Dallas and give them guitars to play and critique, as he was just starting to build guitars and wasn’t a player himself.

I’ve owned 3 G&L US models. My favorite was the S-500 but the downside is they don’t resell very well. Most people aren’t familiar with the brand so you’re kind of stuck with them. I ended up trading a couple to a music store for less.

I think a few years ago people still had issues with the headstock and couldn't get past what they had seen on stages over 50 years of music but now with a lot of well known players out there playing boutique guitars whether by endorsement or just plain choice, made by smaller companies that incorporate lots of variations of the classic S and T style in headstock shape, these designs by Leo may just get the recognition they deserve.

The G&L ASAT classic is my most used guitar - she is a completely underated work horse. I owned more than 30 guitars all over the time and now I am reducing to only 5 guitars. A Fender Am Acoustasonic Jazzmaster, Gibson SG, Starfield Cabriolet and a modified Framus 370 XG. The most versatile guitar is the G&L ASAT. There is one modification: a freeway switch. This adds 3 sounds: both pickups serial, both pickups serial and out of phase, both pickups parallel and out of phase. That is working very well. To me it seems that G&L is leaving the german market? It is really difficult to find a shop with a G&L guitar, even the well knowned german internet shops do not have some in stock.

I got a G&L ASAT new in the mid 90's with the Multi Field Design (MFD) pickups in a custom transparent blue finish. Anyway it remains one of my favourite guitars after playing it for about 30 years. When both p'ups are on they act like a humbucker. Love the 7&1/2" fingerboard radius.(Newer ones are 9&1/2") I got my G&L before a Fender... and if I had to sell one, without a doubt the Fender would go! Actually, I'm thinking about losing my Fender and getting an ASAT Bluesboy.
@fongy2007 ай бұрын
Never tried a G&L. Haven't seen many lefthand models, although i understand they do, do them. My 1974 Strat cost me 1200 quid. It plays beautifuly. Although 70's Fender's (post CBS) are inferior quality, according to people with far more knowledge than I, still, it's a hefty price tag for something that is 'Bad quality'. Obviously they are not all bad. The Bullet Truss rod looks very cool and is instantly recognizable. The tilt mechanism and 3 bolt Neck were radical at the time, and as we know lots of us Guitarist's live our lives in the past. There is no need for it, buy a G&L. Fender's with all the little problems ironed out. Although i expect there are a myriad of know all's and Troll's ready to shoot me down.

Love G&L guitars. The fortunate/unfortunate thing is I live in Australia. Sometimes I think I live in a third world country when it comes music equipment and instruments because of their availability. But then go "definitely not third world with the the prices we have to pay here for equipment and instruments". The G&L tributes are not out of my price range but barely have any representation here. I want a Comanche. They are over 1k here for the tribute and very limited amounts. Maybe one day I will just bite the bullet and get one from Andertons. When you take the VAT off and your shipping is quite cheap now it works out cheaper sometimes. While we dont have a free trade agreement with the UK since brexit.
