Thank you for continuing to make great content! It’s great to see all the different vehicles and types of vehicles doing the same obstacle in one video! I’m sad Mario wasn’t able to make it through the famous Kramers arch! Been talking to a few outlander guys trying to figure out if there’s a way to defeat the traction control system without disabling the electronically locking front diff. Outlander’s have a old subi problem without the easy fix unfortunately. Great vid! Hope to be able to join you guys one of these days!

Thanks for the kind words Jake! You know, I’m pretty sure if Mario took the same line that the Subaru Forester XT took, he may have made it! He said he had the AWD overheated warning so , next time!
@jklpino4 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Ya... I was talking to him about it, I’ve had that light come on before on my car before, but similar to your car, it’s only a warning and let’s you continue driving with all the AWD goodies working.
@JonDZ_Adventuring4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t had that warning in a while now. My friend with the Jeep Gladiator has taught me how to drive the Passport like a 4WD. Spinning tires at high RPM really overhears differentials. Some vehicles like my 2015 Subaru Forester XT doesn’t have a differential temp warning. So it’s good the Mitsubishi does! I suspect that I melted my center diff on my Subaru.
@jklpino4 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Ya, Mario’s car is a little better since he has a V6 and a regular automatic transmission. But for some reason they reduce the crawl ratio somewhat compared to the 4 cylinder CVT outlanders. Anyways, our AWD system just doesn’t react fast enough to drive and creep over obstacles. You have to floor it and let the tires spin to be able to transfers power. It’s a bit frustrating at times, you have to use momentum and momentum can be dangerous. But I try to remind myself what my car is and why I bought it. And I’m using it far beyond it’s intended purpose. 99% I’m super happy with our vehicle. I just wish I could more effectively push it a little more. A torque locker would solve 99% of my 1% I’m not happy with. But as of yet, they still don’t make it for my vehicle unfortunately.

Hi there Jon, I start to laugh at the ease of these obstacles and why guys are struggling. And then I have to take pause and realize I do that kind of stuff on a 2 wheeled motorcycle. I am impressed and blown away with what you can navigate with these crossover SUV's. So for GPS mapping, A really good way is to simply get out there and scout while making tracks at the same time. I then go on Garmin Basecamp and edit the tracks. I change colors and plan routes to share with others. I do understand you are limited with 4 wheels. With 2 wheels I can cover a lot of ground more quickly. More than one way to skin a cat so to speak....

Picking up a dirt bike that I can haul around on the back of my Passport is an idea I’m entertaining! Sounds like a great way to scout. I record my trips with Gaia, but a dirt bike would allow me to blaze some trails. I may need to talk to the guys from borderline explorer. They ride.

We split the group up into two groups. Group 1 was 32 vehicles on an easy/moderate 4wd trail and Group 2 was 9 modified dedicated off-roaders that did a difficult 4wd trail. Of the 32 rigs, only a handful attempted Kramer’s arch. The plan was to leave Kramer’s arch at 1pm, and we left right on time to head down to the mines. The next episode will be about the rest of the trip.

@JonDZ_Adventuring4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Kris! The 3rd Gen SH Forester Turbo does not have xmode, but it does have the 4EAT transmission and traction control (brake based torque distribution). I’d love to see him give it another go with turning traction control off.
@mallkrawlerz6204 жыл бұрын
Subaru owners making us look bad. Every time you hit the breaks you stop the Subaru AWD system software from doing what it’s supposed to do... Transfer power to the wheels that aren’t spinning to get you out of a situation. That and disabling traction control will make your Subaru do what it does best. Smh. Glad you vouched for that Jon. Most people don’t understand how their AWD system works.
@JonDZ_Adventuring4 жыл бұрын
Every awd system works a bit different. My Honda Passports AWD system needs to be driven more like a Toyota 4Runner than most other AWD systems. Like Toyota’s A-trac it’s only active at low RPMs. The 4EAT and CVT Subaru’s act very different. Older 4EAT Subaru’s don’t have traction control, it’s just open differential full time AWD. Two footing it, and tapping the brake aids in “bumping up” obstacles. The 3rd Gen Forester (2008-2013) is special. It has the 4EAT, but also a braked based traction control system. In CVT Subarus, the programming is much different, the torque converter will stall much quicker. Quite honestly, I’m not sure what the outcome would be if the Subaru Forester turned off traction control, but there’s only one way to find out! A redo! 😃

@@JonDZ_Adventuring i'm driving a 2009 Forester but with manual dual range transmission. (i'm in Europe) :) Disabling traction control works great in muddy or snowy conditions when you're stuck or wheels need to spin so you can continue go. It depends. In this situation I'm not sure if it will work.

I'm not one to complain, you know that and this looks like a really neat event...but it also looks like a superspreader event. Where was the precaution? about 1/3rd of my family got sick and all 5 family groups had to quarantine for 2 weeks from an event not much different than this recently; They were outside the entire time and made efforts to distance but they still got sick. My family were all wearing masks and didn't get sick but I still had to take my kids out of school for 2 weeks and miss work. My brother and his wife and my other brother and 3 of his kids still can't taste or smell. I realize the outside is the place we need for respite from this horrible mess, but it's not a free pass.
@JonDZ_Adventuring4 жыл бұрын
Mr. Rich, sorry to hear about your family. This was a socially distanced campout. Vehicles were distanced a good distance apart and many people stayed away from each other. Compared to California standards, we did a pretty good job, but I totally hear ya man. Your story shows that even with precautions, people can still get sick. I had one friend that was showing symptoms and kept his family home. It was a strong requirement that no one shows up to the trip exhibiting signs of sickness. In part 2 we head into the mines (confined space) and everyone (mostly) wears a mask. So far so good, I haven’t heard of anyone that was sick. 41 rigs full of trustworthy people!
@francisngo4 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing. There was one scene where there were about 4 men prying the door open to the CRV and not social distancing or wearing masks. I'm all for this community and watching the videos have been very entertaining but while this looked like a fun event, it also looked very unsafe especially during these covid times.
@JonDZ_Adventuring4 жыл бұрын
@@francisngo I agree. It’s definitely unsafe, probably less so than grocery shopping though.
@picarkingdom4 жыл бұрын
The event was safe and according to CA standards. It was actually annoying to be social distancing in the outdoors, but we still did it. In any case, going out during a pandemia that has a 99.8% survival rate is at your own risk; just like when you drive a car , it’s at your own risk; just like going grocery shopping, it’s at your own risk; just like using a cell phone, it’s at your own risk. The event called for those who were sick, or thought they were sick, or were afraid to get sick, to stay home and not come out. The ones that came out were honest healthy people. You can’t catch a desease from healthy people.
@PatrickRich4 жыл бұрын
@@picarkingdom here's the rub with your logic. My brother felt healthy when he passed it around and we all social distanced outdoors. Those with masks didn't get it. The primary means of spread right now is in familiar groups where you feel comfortable and no one appears sick. Its not just about dying either, there are going to be a lot of people with long term effects of this that live through it as well as some who will die from secondary effects like not being able to get care from overcrowded hospitals or worn out staff. The trouble is, that its not "your own risk", you risk others. So instead of being like seatbelts, it would be like drinking and driving, where your choices can directly hurt others. Trying not to get too preachy but this 3rd wave is 100% because of "its my own risk" attitudes. Its really not at your own risk. Addendum: I do appreciate that efforts were made, and thank you for doing so, even though it can be a pain. Full disclosure I work in healthcare communications and have talked to the nurses and docs and seen the ICU's so I'm just a little sensitive to "Covid is NBD". Again, thank you for social distancing outdoors.
