Honestly, I feel like Black Bathing Suit is her talking about the scrutiny she's gotten for her "weight gain" and all the awful things she's been called by people for it. If you listen, she says, "the only thing that still fits me is this black bathing suit." And her voice in the end sounds so hurt and powerful at the same time. I'm absolutely obsessed with the song. It's funny that you brought up how the production on "Nectar of the Gods" would've been different on past records because it WAS originally written and recorded for Ultraviolence! The songs "If You Lie Next to Me", "Living Legend", and "Cherry Blossom" were also reworked material from that album era. She said that this album was intended for a lot of her critics, so it makes sense that she revisited a lot of songs from that time in her life where the internet scrutiny around her was seemingly at its peak.

BB is definitely one of those albums where you have to know the backstory behind it to get the full experience. She was leaving Jack Antonoff as her producer so she wanted to have her own signature grandiose sound but she was also sonically experimenting. She was dealing with her breakup with Sean Larkin and then getting engaged to Clayton Johnson and splitting up so she must've had a few things to say about those guys. And she wanted to clap back to her critics that attacked her for how she portrays her relationships and her romances. Also some of the songs were very popular unreleased records that she remastered for this album and I'd like to believe that she did this because she knew how fans love those records and she was once serious about releasing a huge record of her unreleased songs. So when you take all of this into consideration you can understand how beautifully chaotic this album turned out to be.

Also, at least 4 of the songs were recorded for older albums (much older, like Ultraviolence, for instance) and the demos sounded almost exactly the same. So, no, the songs wouldn't have had a bigger production in certain parts, they were really meant to sound the way they do.

It's really interesting how many of the songs are from 2013-2014, Nectar of the Gods and Cherry Blossom are both outtakes from the Ultraviolence sessions. Overall this album is so tender and delicate. It feels like she is really wanting to connect with us on this record. She said this album would tell her story, and I think it does. And what's interesting to me is she hyped it up as a response to the critics, but she doesn't really fixate on the negative press attention she's received in the way that, say, Taylor Swift did on Reputation. It isn't really about clapping back at her critics, there are only a couple of places in the lyrics where she references it (in Arcadia and Black Bathing Suit). Instead she's just intent on telling her story, perhaps more directly than ever before. And in a way she's proving the critics wrong by doing that, because people have accused her for a long time of being 'inauthentic' (whatever that means) and this record is probably the most 'authentic' and the most nakedly honest she's ever made.

@@b.entranceperium ultraviolence and nfr are two of my favourite albums from any artist ever I don’t expect her to even equal them again never mind top them. I think she’s always been a bit pretentious in her song writing but that’s part of why I like her. I’m enjoying this album much more than chemtrails but hey to each their own

@@seanfitz1001 I understand music is subjective, but how in the HELL can you like this better than Chemtrails?!?😅 I'm a pretty decent LDR fan, and this album is the only time I skipped songs (besides on Lust for Life and Honeymoon). "Dealer" is actually unlistenable...

@@b.entranceperium I think that this album has higher high points than chemtrails which is why I prefer it at the moment and I’m also not that big of a fan of the last three songs on chemtrails I usually stop listening after Yosemite but hey that might change and I’ll agree with you about dealer it’s terrible and whoever the male singer sucks as well

I feel like this is such a mature album for Lana, lyrically and vocally , but the instrumentals show the chaos that will always be apart of her. How some of the songs change up in tempo and go back and forth from fast to slow, but her lyrics are so profound. That's her. She's just wild. And it's so beautiful

Lana’s 2nd best after NFR!, I thought the highs were sky high on NFR but this album was amazing as well and thats just on the first listen

I am not mad at all that like one third of the songs in this album are actually unreleased songs. I know they have been leaked but I also believe her unreleased songs are beautiful and deserves to be recognized. Tbh, out of all of them, Cherry Blossom is the only song I've heard before and not gonna lie I've always wish she would release it. Then months before the release I learned Nectar of the Gods, Living Legend, Dealer has been leaked before too. And listening to them now made me grateful she released them.

Arcadia is so emotional for me. It’s actually my hometown in California. The Hilton that she sings about, sits where my old house was right across from the train tracks in the video that say ARCADIA. Those are tracks. She nailed the nostalgia I actually feel for my hometown that I left at 23. It’s wild every time I hear it….it hurts in the best way.

just so you know if you lie down with me, nectar of the gods, living legend and cherry blossom were all recorded during the ultraviolence sessions but didn’t make their way onto the album. These weren’t re-recorded from 2013, I love them so much.

I think I read a while back that several songs on the album were initially written for ultraviolence. I imagine the production on them would have been more similar to what we saw on that album if she's recorded them back then.

Not even close to NFR, but still an amazing album, close to Chemtrails I would say. Me being Lana fanboy will listen to this album like 20 more times in the following 3/4 days. Also, first half of the album completely different than the second, due to unreleased songs being recorded much before. 8/10 on a Lana scale :D Jon, love you, but you are allowed to say that you don't like certain track

explanation for violets for roses: lana uses violets (bc their blue) as a way to represent happiness, and roses are a symbol for love. so she’s saying she traded her happiness for love ❤️

I totally agree about Wildflower Wildfire... which was my least favorite song when Lana put it out... until... and this only happen with Miss Del Rey... until the moment i listen to her singing " I've been runnin' on stardust Alone for so long" how lonely she sings it... i have now 352 scrobbles of the song in Last.fm account! Black Bathing Suit is one of my favorites. Agree that Miles Kane Kill (Kill) Dealer! i need more time with this album, it will grow on me like a Cherry Blossom :) Thank you Mr. Denton

I think the main impressive point of this album is the lyricisms. It’s definitely her most honest work, however I was slightly let down by the repetitive piano and how all the songs were quite samey sounding. It’s better than COTCC but I don’t think it’s in the hall of fame with her other albums. It’s a grower for sure, but I don’t see myself religiously loving any of the songs on this in the future, and I’m a huge Lana fan

I love how people begged you to check her out, and now you've reacted to every album since. You feel it, there's no way she isn't your favorite, or at the very least no way you don't see she's the greatest musical artist there's ever been because she changed music completely. Like century changing.

please please listen to the very first ever version of thunder! also i’m pretty sure some tracks were meant for an album her, miles kane, and alex turner worked out which explains why miles kane had such a big part on dealer and which explains why thunder literally screams alex turner/ the last shadow puppets

A bit late but here to share my thoughts nonetheless. On violets for roses, a pretty symbolism i think about is the fact that violets grow in the wild whereas roses are usually associated with gardens. Therefore, one could say that she is talking about the fact that the worse thing a man could do, and what a man did to her, was make her trade her violets (freedom) for roses (comfort).
