Great Video! One important thing. As someone who lived in Arizona for several years (plenty of scorpions and venomous snakes, including rattle snakes), all these bite kits DO NOT WORK, they are a scam. If you are bitten by a venomous snake, the only thing you can do is go to the nearest hospital to get the antivenom. If you want to help, use a pen or sharpie to circle the bite and make a note of the time of when you were bitten. This will help hospital staff identify how quickly or slowly your body is reacting to the venom. But DO NOT rely on one of these kits, it is 100% BS. Hope it helps. Safe travels! Keep the videos coming!
@JonGadget Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback - it does generate a lot of suction so you would like to think it would do something (surely better than trying to suck the venom out movie style!) and it would make sense for a bee sting (need to keep the sting in place when using apparently) and my mate uses it all the time for mosquito bites - but yes, irrespective your advice sounds good to me.
@sng2225 Жыл бұрын
I've added a comment above. Suction on a snake bite is not recommended. Compression bandages and identification as well as staying calm to slow toxin spread is the advice given in Australia until you can get the right anti-venom.
@GeekfromYorkshire Жыл бұрын
@@JonGadget Suction stimulates the innate immune system of an inflammatory response. That response INCREASES BLOOD FLOW to the area so accelerates the transmission of whatever is there to the rest of the body. To reduce flow into bloodstream you need to suppress the imflammation so ice, compression, etc.
@jordibarguno Жыл бұрын
@@JonGadget I can't speak about mosquito bites, but pretty much every Park Ranger, Nurse, Doctor, etc. in Arizona will tell you that all these "bite kits" do not work for snakes. In the case of scorpions, most scorpions are not deadly to a grown healthy human with no pre-existing health conditions. Arizona has the highest scorpion concentration in the USA, and I believe it's within the Top 5 places with the largest number of species, so more than half the people at my office had been bitten at least one time by a scorpion, it was like the most normal thing in the world, jajajajaja. Fun fact if you hit adult scorpions with a black light they glow, it is super cool.

Thank you for making your videos. This; and the other two that you’ve linked, are by far the best travel related videos I’ve seen. Great Video. The Unbound Merino is an excellent find. I had recently seen a video extoling the virtues of merino baselayers on the excellent Trekitt KZbin channel. More expensive than synthetics but the value is in having a quality piece that lasts.

Second merino socks & undies as the best ! Socks last longer without laundry the undies/boxes can yet I don’t push more than two days if needed as rather just rotate laundry them…they’re just amazing if have a sweaty butt like I get in summer or hot climate or vinyl seats or on bicycle lol my favourite to wear just make sure to not use oxyclean in detergent. The blends for me got holes in them after just one summer in smartwool boxers so definitely a pricey item at +35$cdn a pair.

Glad that it was a great trip and thanks for the update regarding the performance of the chosen gear. But regarding the shown "suck out venom" device: I do not know if it will lower the itching from mosquito bites, but I am pretty sure, that will have no effect to the venom of snakes and scorpions. Please make yourself a picture, but in my opinion you can save yourself the space

the instructions make that claim and you do get a lot of suction - hope I don't need to try it though!

I wear Kathmandu merino t-shirts daily. Get them on sale (never shop at Kathmandu if there’s not a sale). They do have nylon in them as well, but I can confirm they last years of frequent wear. They eventually pick up smell, but certainly not after one day of wear. I stopped keeping track; I just do the smell test each day and wash as needed. Wearing one right now in fact!

May I recommend the TOZO noise cancelling earbuds? They are budget priced. I have used it at work on 10 hours shifts to reduce noise at the warehouse plant I used to work at. I use it when I mow my lawn on my riding lawn mower to reduce noise and listen to music, during which I get sweaty but the TOZO earbuds hold up very well. And they are comfortable. For 1/3 the price of the high end model of Samsung and Apple earbuds, they are GREAT!!!! Sound quality is good and noise cancelling is awesome.

Thanks Jon. I was looking forward to your experience using your kit. I read a lot of what people take on their carryon only trips but few ever tell of how it went and how they would improve. I am currently on a trip using a similar setup to you but had to bring a laptop as well for some work. Unfortunately your video came out after I started my trip. I didn't bother bringing a razor but let my beard and hair grow out. It was ok but I think I will give your suggestion a try next time. I saw your friends bite kit and while it would be ok for the most part I wouldn't recommend it for snakes. The recommended approach is stay calm, compression over the bite, identify or take photo of the snake to get the right anti-venom when help arrives. Prevention is better than cure. If you can't avoid contact then snake gaiters and solid shoes might help.

Hmm, I am not aware of a backpack at such a nice weight, but I am quite happy with a modular Tac Pack 28 from Tasmanian Tiger which is 1.35 kgs with a back support containing an aluminum rod that can be removed. The Velcro inside allows for attaching different (compression) pouches, Molle on the outside, easy access to the insides, has compression straps. The straps are removable. Backpack - the one I use can't be bought as company bust - a GoLite 40L with removable hip belts - fits in any overhead but usually bigger than I need, they also did a 30L with a laptop sleeve which was perfect for me as I was doing business trips with a full laptop. I don't use as many smaller pouches as you as over the years of flying on a couple of occasions they'd switched aircraft short-notice to one with tiny overhead so I settled on 3 internal bags so I can quickly split the contents up and the backpack folds/rolls and so I can fit it anywhere. I agree with your use of a frame-less squish-to-any-storage-shape. Also a fan of Merino Wool, in my case I used Smartwool, and yes I get probably 5 days without pong INITIALLY. But even after washing the subsequent pong-free period is slightly shorter say 4 days. What restores back to as-new pong-free-period is leaving it out in strong sunshine for a day or two which kills what the washing hadn't removed. Typically you'd do that in summer months to restore back to as new. My merino wool I keep 2 long sleeve 2 short sleeve and I use them exclusively for long light travel. One trick you didn't mention is if you have 2 merino tops you can wear BOTH if cold. I don't travel with only 1 merino top in case of accidents (e.g. food spillage) and I can either wash it or just use as a layer. I am also a fan of a bumpag (aka fannypack) for travel as you can keep a few essentials on your person like a USB cable or toothbrush. It complements a daysack acting as a kind of hip support. If I'm not with a laptop, only a tablet like you were, I travel with 18L backpack and a bumbag. If i'm with laptop then I can't get smaller than 30L backpack. Footwear, if it's not business related then I find some Keen Newport work across a full gamete of warmer weather situations, including downpours (just get wet just let them dry) they don't collect odour so much, pack 1 pair of merino wool socks to wear when colder of which typically the coldest part of the trip is the flight! I fully agree with a tablet with LTE (phone capability) as backup phone. Mine is a Huawei 8.4 Mediapad M3 4 years old now but I love it. A bluetooth keyboard makes it a generally good system. Eye cover for sleeping - I use a dark Buff I fold a few times over eyes and a dark waterproof cap, combined I block all light and these are multifunctional items. A good (available currently) is a Montane Minimus Stretch Ultra Cap

But in about a week, we’re on a family trip. And I’m using this small light bag for the first time. Clothes for a week, tech bag, first aid kit, and toiletry bag. I still have space.

Rehose 22 packs are phenomenal however they are hard to get also Hyperlight Versa is a great convertible fanny pack that will easily attach to the front sternum strap and is made of Dyneema

Can’t find the aspivenin pump for sale in Australia but at least I know to try my smallest vacuum Chinese cupping cup next summer when the mosquitoes start biting when I’m at home! Thanks.

Interesting content! Thanks for sharing your travel gear! I just have a question about the revolut, does it automatically pay the right currency required when you use it or you need to manually set it up before using it? Thanks
@JonGadget Жыл бұрын
It uses local currency first I believe. I converted all funds to local which is why I’m not 100%

Very interesting! Thank you, sir, for your timely follow-through of actual credible experience with your previously described, explained, and well-thought-out carry-on travel kit. I'm glad it worked out so well for you in every important regard. It's always great to see people "who eat their own dog-food." 😁

Love the suggestions for airalo & revolut. Sadly revolut is unavailable for Canadians. We don’t come up as an option.

I have the Bose QuietComfort® Earbuds II. The Apple noise cancelling buds dont fit me either. Think I have a weird shape ears, never had a fit problem with Bose ear buds. The sound of the Bose QuietComfort® Earbuds II is amazing and noise cancelling is so good !!

Hi jon could you link the toiletries, get me out, tech kit and other small kit you had in the bag?

Love the content. One question: I remember you went into a lot research to identify your pack of choice for travelling. So how did the Matador bag compare to the Able Carry Max ?

No link to your t-shirts. Also can you do a video on how you organise your own clothes and toiletries at home? what gadgets and setup you have to manage all these would be wonderful to see

Well done Jon! Couple of questions + 1 comment: Q1 - you mention the Revolut Card in this video but in your Get-Me-Out-Of-Trouble kit I remember you had a Post Office Card as well - do you take both with you? Also, have you found any difference between using the Revolut and PO Card? Q2: A number of the links you provide are to US sites priced in USD so do you "bite the bullet on duty, etc, if the item is shipped from the US (also making it more expensive, or do they have UK sites)? On the comments side, I tried the AirPods Pro and they didn't fit me so I went for the Bose QC Airbuds which fit much better and are a "game changer". Thanks for a great video.

The post office one might just be for domestic travel. I'm just assuming that, though.

Hi Jon, Thank you for your work. I will travel by Ryanair and, therefore, I need a travel backpack with 20 liters capacitiy and size (TxDxW) 16x8x10 inch. The Matador SEG28 Travel Backpack is too big and not compliant with the Small Bag allowed by Ryanair to go under the seat. So, which travel backpack do you recommend with that size?

try the skull candy stuff. if reviews are to be believed they perform as well if not better than premium brands. i have a pair of wireless buds and they work well and i'm happy. and having funny ears buds normally don't fit well but these do. also the link for the unbound stuff doesn't work.

thanks for the suggestion - yes Unbound affiliate link offline - a quick google should find them though

Merino, did it really work in 35C temp and high humidity? At such high temp and humidity am really doubtful if merino would work…light cotton, cotton blends or linen blends work best. Am in India so have some idea of how bad it can be :)

I thought the same until I tried it! Totally worked!

Have a look at Wiggles brand DHB for quality but reasonably priced merino clothing. It’s not just cycling kit, they do some very nice t shirts and long sleeve short zip merino tops. Very nice . 👍🙂
