CORRECTIONS: 58:23 - It's not on the edge if it doesn't have six other HEX spaces around it. So the regular tectonics action can only add vents to the outer perimeter of the overall map, not of the current tile area. This vent is therefore placed in an illegal location.
@Overbass80003 жыл бұрын
Doesn't that mean that you can't gain more than 3VP by using regular tectonics action? And that it takes special pawn actions to make more? (placing a vent deeper into the game grid)
@mattiasbjorklund53983 жыл бұрын
This is horribly explained in the rulebook though. reading it over and over it seems like the placement is legal though kind of strange since it has a hex on both side. A better rule would be that you could place it on a hex that has two free sides that are adjecent

I must say I am impressed that you were so willing to tackle such an intricate and complex game like the Dominant Species series. Excellent video as always, you managed to break it down so well and make the game easily comprehendible.

the original Dominant Species has been in my TOP 5 for years and this version looks absolutely wonderful as well, I'm getting it as soon as I can.

whats your top 5? i got into board games recently and this is on my radar although the complexity has made me think i need to build up to it. Always interested in other ppls favourites in complex games to give me something to research

I just ordered this game - awesome indirect war game

Jeez that is a crunchy beast! Love the theming, much more interesting then another historical battle / conflict (which I enjoy but good to see this animal evolution theme get a really heavy treatment). Thanks Jon, I may look at getting this if I think my group can handle the brain burn.

Correction: 35:30 You cannot place your special action pawn on top of your own previously placed pawn. You can only take the spot of a enemy basic pawn.

Great tutorial! This video helped cement my decision to buy this game. At 1:13:45 you say Orange gets 4 points but correctly move them up 7 when you actually move the VP tracker.

Ah, glad I got the scoring right on video anyway. Glad you enjoyed this :)

This seems like a significant improvement over the original game, which was already pretty good. Looking forward to playing it to find out if that's actually the case.

Great playthrough as always! Dominant Species never really piqued my interest, always seemed too complicated as I was entering the board gaming sphere. Thia playthrough made it super easy to understand the rules

I've returned to watch this again. :) This is the one I will be getting. Just looking for the second printed version which has corrections with the game.

Love how Solitary shows a Whale, ie. a mammal, a type of creature you cannot play in this game...

I want one of these games. Not sure which to get. They both are similar, yet different too. Which works better with a smaller player count (2-4 players)?
@JonGetsGames3 жыл бұрын
I have never played either at less than 3, and Marine doesn't even go up to 5 or 6 like the original does. I'd suggest asking about this on the DS: Marine BGG forums. People there are far more informed about player count then I am currently.

Hi! Great video. I have seen that this one comes with many more cards than the original Dominant Species, despite the lower player count. Does that increase variability and replayability or do you find them similar?
@JonGetsGames3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I've only played this once, and I've played the original a couple times over the last decade, so I can't really speak to the replayability of them in comparison.

Hi Jon, can a Special Pawn kick another Special Pawn ? And do you need to follow the rule to always goes to the right or below your previous pawn if your first placement is a Special Pawn ? Thanks :)
@JonGetsGames3 жыл бұрын
Special pawns can't kick out other special pawns, but beyond that they can be placed anywhere.
@ryanbard92733 жыл бұрын
@@JonGetsGames Note that there is an exception, as one of the evolution cards allows specials to kick specials as long as it is on the board.
@georgeresso6835 Жыл бұрын
At 60$ they could have made the scoring tokens for each species a wooden piece in the shape of each species...it would make keeping track of domination and ur vp total less fiddly...otherwise great game
@distrustfulmonkey28323 жыл бұрын
Breaking ties in your favour for the whole game Vs possibly -but not certainly - getting a single extra turn seems objectively far more powerful in an area majority game with a long play time. Not sure about this one......
@JonGetsGames3 жыл бұрын
There has been quite a bit of discussion about this on the BGG forums. You can see some points and counter points about this balance in this thread: boardgamegeek.com/thread/2619871/food-chain-advantage

@@JonGetsGames ok. Thanks for the response, otherwise the game looks fantastic. It just jumped out at me as that one thing that winds up making you dislike a game you'd otherwise really enjoy. I'll have a look.
