People seem to want to know the meaning behind The Weather Machine. So, here goes. It's about the way Western politicians use crises in the Middle East as an excuse to sell weapons. After the Arab spring sprung in Tunisia, various dictators around North Africa and the Middle East were looking at their own populations, worried that they might rise up in revolution. David Cameron, never one to miss an opportunity, flew to Cairo (supposedly to "promote democracy") with eight British businessmen - 'defence contractors', a.k.a. arms manufacturers. We were tooling up paranoid dictators. Our biggest customer was Colonel Gaddafi of Libya. And he was right to tool, up I guess, because a few weeks later, the Libyan people did rise up in revolution. And Cameron, with no apparent sense of irony, sent British troops, to defend the people of Libya, from Gadaffi's men and their shiny brand new British weapons. The revolution won, Gadaffi was overthrown. Cameron went to Tripoli and gave a speech to the assembled masses, and was hailed as a hero, for helping them. It's so sick, it's almost funny. I like to play this song as loud as possible in the vain hope that wherever they are, these grim reapers like Blair, Cameron, Putin, Berlusconi and Bush can hear it, and a little shiver runs down their spine. Or whatever they have in place of a spine. Rant ends. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaHLaaVmh81pg5o

Imagine Jon on a contract with a Record Label and the director would be like "What you have in your mind Jon, a 8:30 song with 2 minutes of intro with crazy lyrics, we're not realeasing that, but as it's written in our contract you can't realease by yourself since you showed it to us, thx bye" Then they would make a postmortem release and some of us would never listen to this masterpiece. Thank you Jon for choosing the harder path for the delight of our ears 😄

Hey Jon, this is amazing! I think that my favourite thing about your music is that I don't like all of it, you don't seem afraid to try something new, and you don't seem willing to compromise your art to resonate with the masses. Your music makes me braver as an artist! I think this has overtaken Passionflower as my favourite Jon Gomm song!

I really dig that song!!! I dig that it has this great Zeppelin-esque feel to it. I dig that there's some serious shredding going on. I dig that it has a message (veiled by metaphor but still - a message! a political message!). It's almost too good to be true. Thank you, Jon.
@jongomm9 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely some big Led Zep vibes inside this tune. Glad the message is getting through the layers of metaphor too.
@vamprosful9 жыл бұрын
Mario Unterköfler Yea, i can see the Zeppelin influence, but i would say more Tea Party-esque sound rings true to my ears, could easily see Jeff Martin playing this. And referencing the weather machine to mean "political climates", well that is what i hear....so not entirely sure, but if that was the idea then well done man. Either way, great song
@bassmann95009 жыл бұрын
***** Well, IMHO the metaphor is quite dense, so many people sure read their own meaning into it... (if they don't notice your explications above, that is). I saw some funny interpretations popping up already... but that's what makes it even more interesting!
