It's exactly 5 years since I uploaded this video. I remember after the first week I was really excited because it had reached about eight thousand views. Then: people happened. People all over the world, each having that sweet, private moment of discovery, and then telling everyone they knew, on their social media and blogs. A few weeks later, celebrities from Stephen Fry to Tommy Lee were sharing it. (They always catch up eventually!) Next thing I knew I was sitting on the couch on national TV breakfast news, nervously explaining why I was happy for the love but actually, no, I didn't want a record deal! Eleven million views later, this video has taken me all over the world, from Australia to Mongolia. It's been like floating through Willy Wonka's tunnel at a million miles an hour, until every sense is overloaded. Now, I am calm (relatively) and settling into a new life with my baby, but writing new songs and getting ready to take them back on the road next year. To me today, this video is a symbol of what we can do together, our minds and wills linked by technology. We can sink down, sure, we can post mindless abuse, we can seek petty confrontation from the safety of our sofas. But, we can also raise up, we can use our collective power to raise up other people, people we believe in. We can transform democracy, our societies. Direct action to change our world is no longer something we have to start alone, cautiously seeking out allies. When the media tells you the internet only empowers predators and terrorists, it's because they are afraid. We don't need them any more, telling us what to think, who to hate, what to buy, how to vote. I am small, but we are legion. Weakness is not your weakness.

I'm often racked with self-doubt. Which means I find compliments hard to receive: I get embarrassed, and part of me never truly believes them. So, sometimes afterwards I worry that I probably seemed a bit weird. But... You may feel that music gets you through tough times, or helps you find your own inner strength. But it's a circle: your reaction to their art does exactly the same thing for artists, it's what gives them the strength fight their insecurity to keep creating, and gives that creation meaning. So. To everyone who has followed and supported me and my music throughout 2014: THANK YOU. I can't wait to get out on the road again, and meet as many of you as possible in 2015.

I've heard this song something like 50 times. Never actually listened to the lyrics. That's not a bad thing, but now I hear this lyric... and you're right, it's golden. I'm an amateur strength athlete and I have been doing BJJ for a while now, but one of the main reasons I do BJJ is so I can feel weak, so I can understand what it is like in reality because some people *CAN* overcome a simple strength advantage through skill and experience. It's a humbling experience that is made visceral when someone takes your back and starts choking you and there's not a damn fucking thing you can do about it, even if you are literally 5 times stronger than the guy. Weakness is not your weakness... the idea is fantastic any way you apply it - and it can be applied in so many ways.

I have been playing guitar for 25 years now and have been told that I am good.....sometimes I feel that its even true...then I see this and know that there is so much more. Maybe another 25 years and I'll be half as good which honestly...I would be happy for lol. You sir, are an inspiration and I thank you for sharing such beauty with the world.

I don't get it. Why people hating on the cover to put the original on a pedestal? He even credited the original source in the video (which was made a year after the original), it's just people spreading it on Facebook that didn't bother to credit the composer. The original is beautiful - Jon Gomm, he's done incredible work, both at composing this piece, playing the guitar the way he does and singing as well. But the cover is a great tribute to his work as well. Don't hate and trash for the sole reason that the cover's gotten more recognition than the original. Enjoy both.
