There's something really special about the fact that she's playing the song before it's even finished.

Yeah. Also gave a little more insight into things, the changed later lyrics. Definitely wasn't finished, or as good as it would become (first track on Blue). She added layers, but the whole TRUTH in men and me, false commaraderie (sp) bit interesting to hear. She took out some of the bitters and made it better. I've always wondered, too...in live versions I've seen, where she changes lyrics in the song Hejira, the snow falling or gathering "Like bolts of lace...waltzing on a ballroom girl", or the like, to "Bridal". Change of attitude, or just perfecting a line? There is another (disappointed I cannot remember it presently), live, where she changes a line, I think it is also from the album Hejira...maybe Refuge Of The Roads (yes). The line about being a defector from the petty wars, "Until Love sucks me back that way". In a live version she changes that, leaves out that whole romantic notion, with the passing of the years, maybe, or not wanting to seem so caught up in love.

Yes. In a sense, we get to witness the evolution of a song. A great song. And for me, the fact that I've heard & loved the released version of this song for over 4 decades, having the opportunity to hear this "in the works" version is a real blast.

Can you imagine living in a old shack house is Laurel Canyon in the 60s and having Joni and David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young and Cass Elliot and Frank Zappa ... on and on, so many more musical greats ... geniuses and they were just people who hung out together and met in their yards and sang and played their new songs. The song Joni is singing here is in transition. It is very different than the song we are used to hearing. It was just a hotbed of ideas and musical invention. No one person making music like the next person. It must have been amazing.

This was the first Joni Mitchell song that I ever heard. The unusual thing about it was that when I heard it, I was in the music room in my high school and it was casually being sung by a girl who was a student singing in the spur of the moment. I decided to ask her about the song and who had recorded it. She briefly answered Joni Mitchell, but later I could not recall if she said Joni Mitchell or perhaps Joan Baez who were the only artists that had a J first name intitial in the neighborhood Rolling Stone Store. I was only 15 years old and had only listened to main stream music on the charts and was not familiar with artists like Joni. I took a guess when I bought a Joni Mitchell album and luckily guessed correctly. Once I heard Joni Mitchell s music I was so in awe that I have listened to her music for almost 50 years. (had to reveal my age) I would love to thank that high school girl who introduced me to Joni Mitchell and often think it was just meant to be. I cannot explain it but Joni Mitchell and her music have empowered me and in some mysterious way I became a different person and she has been my inspiration.

Joni's music is so special, beautiful and hard for others to cover. My favorite Jodi sing is river. I was for enough to hear Dave Van Ronk of all people cover song. It's incredible that someone like Dave Van Ronk with that low gruff voice cover a Joni Mitchell song, but it worked beautifully.

I love this! You can tell this version is way more raw than the one on Blue. She really honed it by the time it was recorded. You can tell she stepped back a little in the final version. Here it makes it more clear the relationship is over, whereas in Blue, there's a sense that maybe the two people in the song are still together.
@ElaineLangFTW
@ElaineLangFTW 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this version is self-reflective about herself, and her emotional interface with relationships in general. The final version transitions to a love song to a particular relationship...this draft has Joni looking at patterns in her relationships. Very vulnerable.

I totally agree Brad, your comment is very insightful. Keith Jarrett's instrumental version is also amazing. In addition to playing piano, he plays soprano sax, tenor recorder and some percussion. I think Jarrett's recognition of her songwriting ability opened the door for her collaborations with Mingus, Pastorius, Metheny, Shorter, Mays and Hancock. She is truly an icon.

Holy cow, what an amazing difference in this and the final version. She was definitely more irritated by the man she's singing about. There's some pretty heavy words she decided not to keep. I believe this may be the most honest and raw thing I've ever heard from her. Thank You for this gem!

"All I Want" Such a GREAT SONG!!! Few artists can convey happiness like this. I'm singing my way, after an ER therapy phone session, through a BAD breakup (breaking up **at least** for now). At least I have my voice. Very warm, with great range, today. A blessing. Nothing improves your range like singing with this amazing, impassioned singer-songwriter. No one like her. I don't know if she found happiness, but she made art.

What I find amazing when I hear something like this (i.e. earlier drafts of pieces by real artists) is: 1] How even this "unpolished" version of the song is clearly better than 99%+ other song writers could produce. and 2] How much better the final version is than this version. The mark of a true genius is this ability to keep working and to know how to turn something even this good into something truly great.

One of her best. I'm a 43 year old music snob, and it seems to me that somehow she got lost in the cracks with my crowd...Don't understand why people my age and younger go on worshipping so many mediocre acts from the 60s and 70s, but skip over or completely miss people like her. All of her early stuff was genius...never skip a track. Music has been horrible for so long now. I envy you old hippies for getting to live IN this music. Though I do think my generation saw the last good era for music in the '90s, it still doesn't compare to this.

kidkoffee -- Thanks for your post, it is so true ! I am one of those that was 22 years old in 1970, living in California, and so loving all the real, kind, loving, people that were all part of that great movement.. Joni Mitchell was and is an incredible woman and musician, and if you ever had the experience to know many of those types, they are really, very unique and are blazing their own trails because that is what they were put on this earth to do, apparently.. If Joni Mitchell had decided to go full on make music for the top whatever list of AM radio, then she would have totally dominated that place for so long, but instead, I think she was just being herself and much more importantly, true to herself.. There is no question, that she was and is absolutely brilliant in all that she accomplished and yes, we were all so much more blessed to have had her music so close to us back then.. And what makes all this period of life so much more incredible is that almost all of these great, great, people back then were also so kind and caring and sharing their music between themselves, so that all benefited from it.. Look at what her buds, Crosby, Stills, and Nash did with her beautiful song, "Woodstock" !! It totally launched them when they played it at Woodstock!!! I am so sad to see her alone now, dont know why, I need to read her books and get to know her more that way and perhaps then I will know why she has chosen that path.. I would have wanted her to have a big family of children, some of them looking and singing like their Mom... How wonderful that would have been ! Yes, I know she has a daughter, but I cannot remember much about that relationship that has been shared with us mortals.. :) For sure, no one will ever have that beautiful, angelic, soft, sweet voice with such incredible range, that always, always, brings such peace to my heart and mind, as this young girl in this video, Joni Mitchell...
