Joni hadn’t done much television at that point and was very nervous about coming on Cass’s 1969 TV special. Cass said, “Just come on and sing. You won’t be alone up there. I’ll be sitting in front of you. Just like you’re in my living room.” Henry Diltz was right: Cass Elliot was sent by the angels. She made a lasting impact on people’s lives and on popular music.

@tw3643 жыл бұрын
Joni was a fine songwriter but didn't even have the hit with it, Judy Collins knocked it out of the park. Mary Travers with Peter Paul & Mary had far more top ten songs than Mitchell did. Cass was a better singer. So before you say dumb things look at the facts.

I was going to write that. Well that plus being one of Blood Sweat and Tears best hits. I don't know if those 2 would need to collaborate - both being equals. Laura got into Jazz 1st, Joni later. I think it was Steven Stills that told Joni, what she wanted to do musically was Jazz, then came Tom Scott & LA Express. Jazz came later in the Jazz scene with Joni"s music with players like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius plus her collaboration with the great Charles Mingus, and Charles last collaboration who died during the sessions. Laura Nyro's voice was better suited for 'And When I Die', because it had more character, as you'd want for a pop-jazz composition. Mary's voice is just too smooth for this song.

This is what talent in pop singing used to be. Today they would never have a show like this because they would never expose the actual vocals of today's pop singers. Everyone's voice is autotuned to some degree and even at that they aren't half of what these women were vocally. Not to mention a complete inability to harmonize with other singers.
