She is such a naturalistic performer that she can convey a sense of intimacy that few singers can achieve.

One of the rare jazz-folk-rock crossovers and she mastered all three at one point or another. Oh plus she wrote like Dylan and played circles around him on guitar. Not quite the performer or eager to make herself a brand but every bit the complete musician as Prince (who loved her).

She was also partially paralyzed from polio, and created fingerings and chords that made it easier for her to play.

Two great songs by Joni Mitchell. Joni is one of the best singer songwriters. She covers a lot of genres of music including folk, pop, rock, classical & jazz. She has had so many hits especially in the 60's-80's such as "Chelsea Morning", "Help Me", "The Circle Game", "Woodstock", "Raised On Robbery", "Free Man In Paris" etc.

Great reaction. Every time I see this performance it makes me smile. Joni is arguably one of the best singer-song writers. She also knew how to interact with the audience. Even when she messes up a little she doesn't let it get to her. The part in "Big Yellow Taxi" where she laughs is a great example (time stamp 2:22) - she mentioned that she laughed at that point because she realized she mis-play a chord on the guitar, and she thought it was funny.

Joni Mitchell has been part of my life for over 50 years now & I feel so blessed. Her poetry, the flow of her singing & musician-ship with piano, guitar, dulcimer have soothed my soul so many times, It is great to see her magic affecting you too. The early live stuff is how I shall always remember Joni.

Oh Sarah, you would have thrived during the folk music era in New York during the 1960s. The storyteller era was lyrically brilliant and musically gratifying. Thank you for this, it carried me back to my young hippie days, seeing all the acoustic performers (legally or otherwise, lolll), this filled me with sentiment. 💐🌹☺️😍😇

Joni Mitchell was briefly married/lived with Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash. He wrote a song about her called "Our House" which was one of the bands biggest hits. In her turn, she wrote a couple of songs about David Crosby. She had in fact had relationships with both David Crosby first, then Graham Nash.

OH dear, the connection is so universal, Joni is a medium a genius of music and universal understanding ......and love and connection ultimately........the people that get her and when they get her they really feel it. I sound reductive but as a young, gay canadian I figured out alot of my situational pain when I heard Joni express hers.

@davidclarke6304 Жыл бұрын
Sarah what I would suggest next for you and your sensibilities "River" and "Help Me". I have Loved her since I was 16 and her first album Songs to a Seagull, 1968. She was born 100 miles away from me in Fort MacLeod, Alberta and I felt connected and so proud of her gifts. "Taxi" and "Both Sides Now" are written by her she had success as a songwriter for Judy Collins , Tom Rush etc before David Crosby got her an amazing 1st album deal with total artistic control. He produced it by standing back and letting her go. Typical of Joni she disapproved of the quality and produced her own next 18 albums. Wilful and headstrong she survived love and loss, turned her back on commercial success and plowed new paths in Jazz, which left me cold. Her album "Blue" was voted #3 among 500 best albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. "Blue" with her 2nd album "Clouds" are the most accessible. She had a desultory year at the Alberta College of Art (not good with authority) and has a voluminous and eclectic portfolio of paintings. Oh I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints I'm frightened by the devil And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid- JM

Lovely reaction! 🥰 Such a delight to watch you discovering SEEING Joni while hearing two of her most beloved songs to this day! 🥰 On that same show, she'd also played piano, and dulcimer, showing the same nuance and creativity with them as with her guitar playing.. for which she was known/admired for her 50 to 60-some custom tunings, her own custom chords, as well as her amazing accuracy, dynamics and rhythmic skills. She also PRODUCED her own albums starting with her 2nd album, (her friend musician/singer-songwriter David Crosby produced the 1st) Oh yeah, and she was an accomplished painter/artist before getting into music! She painted the covers (often front AND back) of every album cover, other than the few that were photos. An amazing career spanning many albums and decades. In between albums and songwriting and performing and touring, she painted MANY paintings in varying styles and subject matter... (hundreds of paintings by now, I'm guessing) One of her much later albums included a several-page insert with full-color photos of a few of her paintings)

You should listen to her late 90s revision of Both Sides Now. Much more life experience and pain and change in her voice. Some hate it because she no longer a sweet, clear soprano but I love it.

@ceciliajones7816 Absolutely agree with you. The maturity in the 90's version offers so much more , a real sense of her looking back at life's experience, tinged with a sense of sad regret .

It is about time someone react to Joni Mitchell. I am a fan of all genre of music in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. But is my favorite artist regardless of type of music. She is second only to Bob Dylan when it comes to writing. She has a better voice than Bob.....LOL

Yes, an amazing artist. I loved her music. She was a bit political in some of her music. Most farmers didn't use DDT to keep spots off their apples. Overwhelmingly DDT was used to combat malaria carrying misquitoes and save millions of lives, which it did. Nations that stopped using it saw the death rate from malaria skyrocket. Many musicians write music with the best intentions, but they are often wrong on the facts. Still I love this song and her music.
