I appreciate the attention you pay to her lyrics. As beautiful as the music often is, it's the singer-songwriter lyrics that their songs mostly rest on. Not everyone these days gets that.

Today I did a playlist of the original version, the redone version from 2000 and the 2023 version from the Newport folk festival Joni jam. Hearing her sing these songs through different stages in her life, ages 24,57 and 80 is a touching experiencing. I'll admit it made me a little emotional.

Fun fact: Joni Mitchell was only 21 yo when she wrote Both Sides Now. One of her folk contemporaries, Judy Collins, covered the song and had a major hit single with her version bringing much attention to Joni as a songwriter. Collins' BSN won the Grammy for Best Folk performance in '69, while Joni got the Grammy for Best Folk recording in 1970. Many artists have covered it since ❤

It's a truly genius lyric. There's a name for it that I can't recall, but she uses a device to where each verse is structurally similar, but highlights something different each time, and of course she peppers it with amazing metaphors. She's probably the greatest of all time when it comes to using metaphors in her lyrics. The fact that she wrote this when she was 22 makes it even more impressive. Such wisdom and insight for such a young person.

@@SaeedReacts. People probably have pointed out that there is a second version of this song that Joni did when she was ~30 years older with her voice now deeper and sung with new emotional wisdom. It's almost like a new song in some ways, as she now is looking back at life rather than forward. It's live and has a symphony backing her. Warning it may bring a tear or two to your eyes as it did me. Take care, here's the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/qny0hJ9-YrF_irM

She has had so many hits especially in the 60's-80's such as "Chelsea Morning", "Help Me", "Big Yellow Taxi", "The Circle Game", "Woodstock", "Raised On Robbery", "Free Man In Paris" etc.

Hi Saeed, I too recently went into a Joni rediscovery. Guess what sweet blonde singer reawakened my love of Joni. Yup. On her Instagram channel she has three Joni covers; Both Sides Now w/Jordan on piano, River, and Coyote accompanying herself on guitar “with a crazy Joni tune.” All shorts. So it’s time for some more Tori, no? I got two for you and will caffeinate you appropriately. First up, she was one of 8 acts invited to the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration, in April. One of the two songs she performed wasn’t technically a Carpenters song. It was written by Richard C. And Cynthia Weil. Karen died before even hearing it. Later, in 1987 for his solo album, Time. Richard recorded the song with Dusty Springfield. It was beautiful but that wasn’t the song Carpenters fans were hoping for. So it became the Carpenters song that never was. Flash forward to the 55th. Tori sang “Something In Your Eyes” as her first selection. She was the only performer to do a non-Carpenters song. She also got that applause of the night. Thing was it was recorded for the event but it was boomy (at the church Karen’s funeral was at) and audience noise, coughing etc. So when Tori got home she re-recorded it in her home studio. That’s what I’m asking for. She matched up,video and pictures from the day. This may be as close as we get to a “Carpenters” version of the song. Something In Your Eyes (Studio Version); Produced and sung by Tori Holub kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXuzanaEqJ6MjJYsi=LjAe0cB-pL-D79K5 The second song is a collaboration with Dan Wesley from the UK. He, earlier, made a couple of videos about Tori and her magical voice. She saw them and thanked him for the kind words. A bit later he contacted her with a song idea. Karen sang one line of the song “It’s Impossible” for a Perry Como TV Special medley. He wondered what it would be like if Karen had sung the entire song, so he asked Tori. Turns out it’s one of her favorite songs but she couldn’t find a backing track in her key. So Dan made one for her and a colab was born. Originally written in Spanish by a Mexican composer. It was translated to English and Perry Como had the English language hit. It’s Impossible; Tori Holub with Dan Wesley kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYWuonlmp8x-a8ksi=fvS09FQJ6BdHXfVp There we have it. Lots of background and two songs that await a reaction. No shock and awe, I can’t surprise you now. You know what you’re in for. One last thing, on Impossible, Tori debuts her new microphone. Nothing to see here. There’s nothing of note or special about it. Really, nothing. Don’t stare. Enjoy your coffee… Joe

Beautiful Saeed, your reflective and insightful responses are deeply touching and greatly appreciated. Though I must admit to having many favourite Joni songs, my very favourite is "Lesson In Survival" from what I consider to be Joni's most beautiful album, "For The Roses" (1972). Being sandwiched between Joni's two most commercially successful albums "Blue" (1971) and "Court & Spark" (1974), For The Roses is sadly so frequently overlooked. Saeed, Joni has Soooooooooooooooooooooo many more Rivers for you to yet skate away on. The very loveliest of blessings to you boy loveliness, wherever you are, today, each day, forever and always.

I've been an admirer of Joni's musical and poetic skills for decades, so I was very pleased when, in 2019, the full choir at A Cappella Academy performed this song. It was arranged and directed by Ben Bram, longtime producer/arranger for Pentatonix, and a co-founder of the Academy in 2014 (along with Avi Kaplan and Rob Dietz (who co-arranged the song)). These kids are all under 18, from around the world, and they accomplished this performance with less than 10 days to rehearse. A powerful cover. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJWcoKSBapZ3bLs

I don't think anyone can not only find but then communicate universal human truths like Joni. I'm sure someone else recommended listening to her orchestral arrangement and rerecording of this more than 30 years after she originally wrote and recorded it, in her early 20's, but it's an entirely different song. This one is deep but sung with an innocence that still shines through. The later one is a bit sadder, deeper and you can feel she's lived every day of those 30 someodd years with an intense curiosity about humanity and the world around her. Her albums Turbulent Indigo and Taming the Tiger are some of her later albums and they are full of some of the most amazing lyrics I've ever heard. She cuts to the truth like a sword.
