What a tour de force. Jaco's tone moved me beyond my bass building talents. And theres there's Joni. Moved me to playing my tunes with focus and conviction. ... and freedom to surrender to the next chord or next note.... .And Pat. I'm into playing a different tone, but I LOVE how he makes it all fit. Masterpiece. ... And fun too .Don't forget the percussionist, Happy, adding happiness and right there in the moment. I've played guitar for almost 40 years, and while I always loved the bass and filled in occasionally on songs with the most basic bass parts, it was Jaco Pastorius' playing that made me want to really learn the instrument. He was such an immense talent. It's a shame his life was cut short at such a young age. I wonder what masterpieces he might have created if his mental illness and drug addiction hadn't got the better of him. But I'm also grateful that he gave us so much incredible music in his 35 years. Hard to believe it's been almost 34 years since his death. RIP Jaco.

@@Laayon19 Yeah, it's amazing how natural talent works. I was blessed with a natural talent for stringing words together and have made my living as a writer for the last 30 years. I love what I do, but I'd give it up in an instant to have even a fraction of the raw talent of a guitarist like Hendrix or Garcia or Beck. Learning guitar, bass and piano has always been a struggle for me -- none of it came easy -- and even with all the thousands of hours I've put in, I will never be more than just OK at it. But as frustrating as it is sometimes, the ride has always been fun. That's music for ya.

I’m stating the obvious but this is such an incredible display of live musicianship that it melts your heart. On a technical note for all you musicians, as much as I’ve listened to and watched this performance I still can’t tell where Jaco’s harmonics begin and Pat Metheny’s end and vice versa. Can you? Musically it reminds me of the track ‘Milestones’ on the Miles Davis album by the same name. The bookend solos from Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane are so seamless and connected they sound like one continuous person even though they’re playing two different instruments with different pitches. As with Jaco and Pat as well as Don, Lyle and Michael on the other tracks, particularly ‘Hejira’, the interplay is magic.
