Piano was not her favourite instrument to play LIVE, but her vocals OMG they are her own. Yes she is a storyteller.

One of a kind. No one like her. No one can touch her.

Joni was at peak of popularity when I was 15 or so, and I must admit I didn't Appreciate her. Let's face it teenage boys are not in touch with their emotions at that age Later in my twenties, I listened to her live album MILES OF AISLES in which she turned up the rhythym as artists tend to do in concerts, and held my attention long enough to hear the extraordinary emotion and musicianship in her songs, and I fell hard and fast for this unbelievably talented singer-songwriter. Thank God.

She was a poet (and painter) first. She kinda stumbled into the whole music thing, but boy, did she kill it!

A master wordsmith like Joni can place you inside her head describing a literal few short seconds when one day she heard a sidewalk musician as she was about to cross the street. THAT is some genius writing.

First time hearing that song and it touched my soul. I will appreciate every busker a little more because of Joni Mitchell.

Believe or not, she was known mainly as a brilliant guitarist and songwriter. But, man could she tickle the ivories and sing. 🙏

I've loved this song since the album came out and it makes me feel all the feels. It reminds me to recognize the buskers and drop a little something in their case when I see them. Unfortunately, it's not often enough, but I care a hell of a lot more because of Joni's song. Listening to Joni is a masterclass in music and storytelling ... one of the greatest songwriters ever! Love you two ... you're great!

This song is my favorite example of a brilliant poet capturing a single moment and transporting us into that moment. You could take away the music and the voice and it would still take you exactly where she wants us to go. IMO nobody can do that like Joni. Thank you for reacting to this. Also the whole album (Ladies of the Canyon) is a great listen!

The bending of the words is one of her trademarks. I love it. It's imaginative and creative!

Our world is stuck on idol worship. Talents takes back seat to notoriety. As a musician of some 30 years, I've always found some of the best music on the streets. Just go to the 3rd St Promenade and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Thank you for this. I think your understanding of the song is spot on, even if I disagree with the idea of turning the NATURAL rhyme of "jewels" and "schools" into the AWKWARD "jew-ELLS" and "schoo-ELLS." It's been a pet peeve of mine for the 45 years since she first sang it and I've promised myself I will ask Joni about it should I ever be lucky enough to meet her, lol. All kidding aside, thanks again for this and for your passionate reaction. You guys are great!

Check out her very early work on a Canadian folk song show in the middle-60’s. She was in her late teens, maybe early twenties. It is on KZbin.

Thank you for your impressive reaction to Joni Mitchell. About the photos during the video. That has been done by someone else later, who mixed them with an exciting video of Joni playing piano. Not an official music video. [Edited for typo]

Its a great song. That uploader must have added the photos because they were not on the original. I guess they were trying to meke it "transformative" to avoid the copyright claim. It is from a studio concert Joni Mitchell did at the BBC back in 1970. The whole concert is really nice and a snapshot of the time. Throughout it is only her playing one instrument, be that piano, guitar or dulcimer.
