Phillip Hardy I've read many articles about Jaco as well as his biography and learned that Joni had a way of telling him what to play without actually doing so this not offending him. She gave him the position of music director in all her productions. I think Jaco felt he had complete musical and spiritual freedom in this group.

jsilence418 Ah... you misunderstand my friend. This is meant as a compliment to both Jaco and Joni. They were a rare and awesome team. They understood each other very well. The musicians on her albums in general were amazing how they played and listened to each other. The meaning of my comment was that Joni encouraged her team to play and engage as a band at their fullest potential not holding back yet making way for each other's creative input. Thanks for your challenging comment however.

Couldn't agree more. I have a particular disdain for almost anyone who says that they're the best in the world at anything. But, when Jaco has said that he's the "greatest bass player in the world," that's really hard to argue with. There are other great bass players, but he is absolutely in a class all his own. Pure genius.

"In The War Of Independence, Rock and Roll rang sweet as victory." The words to this song remind me of how intense and important the music was in the young days. Of course, it's a relief that the present generation isn't as rebellious as we were ..... or are they? Those were heady times, and I shudder when I think of how it was so often "Us Against Them" !!!!! Haha! Joni's a bit older, so her references are slightly different. She looks back on the pre-hippie days, as shown in the spliced in video clips. I wonder if that world was even more intense and rebellious than ours ...... Hard to believe, but it could have been! Downtown My darling dime store thief In the War of Independence Rock 'n' roll rang sweet as victory Under neon signs A girl was in bloom And a woman was fading In a suburban room I said take me to the dance Do you want to dance? I love to dance And I told him They don't take chances They seem so removed from romance They've been broken in churches & schools And molded to middle class circumstance And we were rollin' Rollin' Rock 'n' rollin' Downtown The dance halls and cafes Feel so wild you could break somebody's heart Just doing the latest dance craze Gail and Louise In those push up brassieres Tight dresses and rhinestone rings Drinking up the band's beers Young love was kissing under bridges Kissing in cars Kissing in cafes And we were walking down Main Street Kisses like bright flags hung on holidays In France they kiss on Main Street Amour, mama, not cheap display And we were rollin' Rollin' Rock 'n' rollin' Downtown In the pinball arcade With his head full of pool hall pitches And songs from the hit parade He'd be singing "Bye, Bye, Love" While he's racking up his free play Let those rock 'n' roll choir boys Come and carry us away Sometimes Chickie had the car Or Ron had a car Or Lead Foot Melvin with his hotwire head We'd all go looking for a party Looking to raise Jesus up from the dead And I'd be kissing in the back seat Thrilling to the Brando-like things that he said And we'd be rollin' Rollin' Rock 'n' rolling X2 Rollin' Rollin' Rock 'n' rollin' Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Joni Mitchell In France They Kiss on Main Street lyrics © Crazy Crow Music Web results

I feel this live version is superior to the 1970s studio version. Joni's singing is excellent as always, but the jazzier arrangement, with Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius, puts the song over the top.
