American Idol can't produce something like this. This is called Art. There is no formula to make it/present it to the masses- but the smart ones know it when it comes around.

1:42 is my favorite part! Joni makes a mistake, cleans up in a flash, laughs about it silently to him, and moves on, back into her 4th of July painting. She’s surreal! Joni, I’m thankful that you were born.

One of my proudest moments was listening to "For the Roses" at age 15 (having never heard of Joni), and just KNOWING that this woman was for real, a rare talent, and a genius. I'm 32 now, and I've heard every fucking songs she has done, and there literally isn't a bad one. She rivals (if not surpasses) Dylan in lyric writing, and competes with opera when it comes to emotional impact. One of the all time greats, in this writers opinion.

It is so wonderful to read so many lovely comments because one of the things Joni did for me as a teenager made me know I was not alone in the way I felt or looked at the world and now I am 59, so I have been a devoted fan of all of her work for 45 years and I see others feel the same way. This is a magical piece and thank you for posting it. Although some said it was pretentious when she edited W.B. Yeat's poem, The Second Coming or Slouching Toward Bethlehem, on the same disc, it too is one of my faves in this collection. Get well Joni and if you can't do may you have peace. I will always love this human being and the art she produces.

There's also a humility in her performances. Her delivery communicates that the audience is more important to her than being noticed herself. I say that because Joni Mitchell gets a lot of heat for alleged arrogance, which seems really unfair to me.

This might be the most courageous, beautiful, flowing, multi-dimensional solo performance I have ever seen in any genre. Look at how bold and completely unstoppable Joni is. You can't stop her; you can't mess with that energy, and it has something to tell us. Seertrulth, you got that right. No more needs to be said but to listen carefully, young and old. Crazy, crazy stuff.

God, this is so so good that it just feels petty to pick out any single aspect of it. The songwriting, the voice, the singing, the rhythmic control, the lyrics, the guitar play, the joy and so on. I could listen to this on repeat for the rest of my life.

Even in this, unembelished, impromptu performance, she projects an authority an honest sense of a moment in her life that might, just might resonate with other lives. Bit it doesn't matter if it's a truth for us or not. What matters is it's a song from the heart, about a moment in the heart.

I was just thinking...after deplaning, fade to black-ing...this would be a beautiful, gentle, soothing world to awaken into (prelude, to whatever is next), Joni Mitchell, sitting by a river, playing you a song, a smile on her face...for the Night Ride Home.

When I first began listening to Joni, my family asked me if I was "ok". So many find her music depressing or melancholy in some way, and I never have. She tells of the reality of life in a way that appeals to those who have felt it in a fashion similar to the way she has. I know of no other musician who plays from their heart the way she does, except for Nick Drake...and this used to be "pop" music, along with so many other geniuses. I am 30, and I regret my generation.

I always loved Joni. She is the best female artist on the planet. Her songs have depth, emotion, and true grit. She is truly one of a kind. One of my favorite songs by her is Cold Blue Steel. It's so nice to hear her today. Her voice has matured and I think that her best work is yet to come. Topics like world peace, war, genocide, peace, and even love, love of self, eachother, friends, the earth, and even God are all still very relevent. God Bless.
