Dude, the amount of time and knowledge it took to make all these pieces of equipment talk to eachother so perfectly is seriously impressive! I know a lot of producers are probably like "yeah, no biggie", but it's so cool to see how interactive your studio is!
@nickloss2377

it's called signal flow. doesn't take much knowledge to understand signal flow.. anyone can do it. you just need to take your time. audio is just electricity. you need to follow signal flow the same way you follow electrical flow.. it takes a little bit of problem solving and thought process and lots of patience. the worst thing you could do is rush through it and not pay attention to the ins and outs or plug in the old device that is damaged or damaging it yourself by not understanding what goes in and what goes out. I admit that this chap must have taken a bunch of time to ensure is vintage gear is properly functioning. the reel to reel recorder has more mechanical properties that would create audio artifact if it was running too slow or too fast.. has to be properly calibrated are you introduced things like flutter and a whole bunch of other crap I don't want to remember from the analog tape days. other than that, the microcosm I think would require a high z input maybe also output.. not sure if his other midi equip is sending a properly high impedance output.. that's about the only thing that would have me scratching my head.. but nothing the manual wouldn't sort out and a DI box wouldn't fix. but maybe it accepts a line levep signal. I don't know.. the rest is a piece of cake. you shouldn't dismiss your own ability simply because you're not familiar with the gear.. it's like sex. there's a hole for things to go IN and another hole in which other thing come OUT. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Looking forward to hearing your story about it and seeing how you end up using it. I think I can speak for most of your watchers in saying thank you for your transparency about your craft. Back in 85, when I was 20 years old, the 388 was like a wet dream for guys like me, playing guitar in a band and wishing we had that thing to record music in our rehearsal room. It was just to expensive so we simply couldn't afford it. Now, honestly I wouldn't want it any more. That is because modern Daws can sound like this reel recorder, but the 388 will never sound like my expensive Apogees... ;-)

I owned a 388 back when it was the scream of the industry. I jacked up the speed as you did, and hit the levels hard for penetration. Just a tiny bit of distortion makes the drums sound really fat and slutty. I've always felt that when you push the tracks on a good analog machine, without going into the red, you get the 'color' of the machine -- similar to what Tame Impala does with his plethora of analog machines. The 388 is great for that. The back side of that is -- as is with most domestic studio recording devices -- you have to contend with a certain amount of hiss. I found, especially with the 388, that dialing in a boost of 4 to 10 K directly on your tracks, it will reproduce a much cleaner signal. You have to watch it that you don't drive the highs too hard so you don't get that nasty sibilance distortion. The goal is to pull out the transparency from the tape, so it takes some trial and error. You can pull back the highs just a bit during mix-down, and see what I mean. You lose the noise that way. I wish I could get my hands on another one. I cut a lot of professional records on that thing. Its sonic characteristics are amazing. And it was built to last. I can't wait until we see more professional analog machines in the future. Coming from an old pro, I stand with those who believe that analog is better. The 388 is the perfect machine for any beginner using analog.
