At a cousin's baby shower, my then wife was asked when she was going to have kids. The person asking didn't know that some months before that she had had an emergency hysterectomy. She never went to another family baby shower. So, yeah, don't ask people that, no matter how well meaning you think it is.
@AMcDub0708
@AMcDub0708 Ай бұрын
I’m sorry that happened to your then-wife. But to withhold forgiveness from a person for not knowing is not the right thing to do. Refusing to go to anymore family baby showers because someone made a mistake also isn’t right. When your then-wife makes egregious mistakes, I’m sure she is moved when someone extends her forgiveness and a second chance to learn from her mistake. That’s wrong to rob someone else of that. It sounds like she was hurting very very much and if she hasn’t yet healed, therapy is invaluable. I hope she’s doing much better now.

Don’t ask this and don’t say that. You know, I’m sorry that happened, but.. well, it’s really up to each of us to realize that things are going to come up sometimes that might lead to discomfort or a painful memory. That’s just life. Can’t expect the world to tailor itself to my needs and whims.

She was the very girl who made me think twice of asking people "When are you going to have kids?" She taught me that by asking this question I could cause pain to those people who want to have kids but can't, and pressure to those who don't want to have kids yet. I learned to be a bit kinder to others by avoiding this question. She is such a beautiful, wise woman. I also realized that this also applies to asking couples "When are you going to get married?" I personally am at this point in my life when my boyfriend and I are asked this question on a daily basis. He hasn't even proposed yet. Tbh, this caused so much pressure on our part because we are not yet ready. And it's making me sad to be asked by friends because it's just so hard to explain when when I myself don't know when we are gonna get married.
@paularopo3492
@paularopo3492 2 жыл бұрын
Hey I just wanted to comment on this in case it's helpful! I'm sorry you're feeling pressured. I was on the fence about when to have kids for a long time. I started dating this guy when I was 15. From the start we thought we'd eventually marry and have a kid or two, but I kept having doubts about our relationship and whether it would go well (I handle stress badly and knew that the baby/toddler years are difficult). I was discussing it honestly with friends. When other people started asking I said were talking about it but not in any rush; I was in uni so no one was that insistent. After 5 years or so we got engaged (I proposed, we had already talked about marriage for years and in our culture it's completely normal for women to propose as well, so he wasn't surprised). We didn't want to spend money on having a wedding while I was still studying, so we've just been engaged for 5 years. And then after dating for 10 years, both growing a lot and talking a lot, I said hey, now I think I'm ready, let's have a baby. She turned 1 last month :) but it took a really long time to figure that out, and I'm not sure I would have been happy if I'd had her sooner; we might well have broken up because of the stress and uncertainty. We might get married next year or not, it's not a huge deal to us because our relationship is between us; a marriage is a legal matter / to communicate your status to others, and neither of those is a priority (we have life insurance so financial matters are settled). Things that I think help with feeling pressured to reach a milestone: - have people you can talk honestly to, both about your dreams and your doubts. Including your partner, but also other friends, so you can share other perspectives and support your friends in these questions too - be really on the same page with your partner. You know what's more romantic than a surprise proposal? Both of you feeling safe and comfortable with your shared plan for the future :) - focus on the intent behind the question: for example, most people don't really care when you are having kids. It's just a fun thing to wonder about to them, not unlike wondering about what the weather will be like tomorrow or who will win a sports event. It's just to entertain themselves. However, there are also people who are really just wishing you a happy life. They are just saying it in a way where they project this view of a generic happy life to you (we assume if someone is happy they get married and have kids, because that's what the whole happy ever after used to be about). They're not really wondering what you'll do, just saying "I hope you get all these things that make you happy, and I don't know what makes you happy so I assume it's marriage and kids because that's what happens in the movies". I hope this makes sense. Anyway, try to take it easy :) and if someone is insistent, it's ok to tell them that you don't feel comfortable sharing such private things with them. People usually don't want to seem nosy and rude, so if you make it clear that asking more questions would be nosy and rude they may shut up.

Jonna's response to the question of "when" she's going to have children is perfect. Asking someone when or if they're going to have children is such an invasion of privacy and renews the deep grief of those who secretly want but can't have them. More and more people now are deciding not to have children, and at least one in eight struggle with infertility, with many never able to have children despite receiving invasive, prolonged, and expensive medical treatment. Go ahead and wonder about it, but never, ever ask.

Thank you for addressing the 'when are you going to have kids' scenario....it's so comforting to hear someone talk about it, and your words resonated with me. There is still very much an expectation to have children, particularly on women, and if you don't have them by a certain age or say you've chosen not to, they look at you like you've got three heads or think you're selfish. As for the whole people asking 'when' not knowing someones situation, that can be so so hurtful when they're in the midst of it. But, the more we talk about things the better we can all understand and grow. Thank you for your honesty. x

I hear you. For years my husband and I were asked when we were going to have kids and it felt very intrusive as it's a personal decision. There were situations going on in our lives at the time that would have made parenthood difficult for us, and people assumed we were just being selfish, or people would say who will take care of us when we get old. I saw my mother struggle to keep a roof over our heads after my father died and I was always thinking what if that happened to one of us. My husband also had health issues and job layoffs so I was holding it all together being the sole breadwinner for most of our marriage.

Thank you for speaking about people who are unable to have children that get asked this question. It would be a huge medical risk for me and a child due to genetic disorder which causes blood clots and it always hurts when I'm asked when I will have children or why I don't have children. I appreciate your encouragement to others to think further before they ask those questions rather than would you like to have children or do you want children, which tends to be less painful. Though honestly, people have a right to choose how they live so to ask at all is not necessary. I know many people who have kids who never wanted them and several who struggle being a parent and providing. Reproduction is not an indication of your worth or value, though it is often viewed as such. As seen in some of these comments. 😢

Luckily we have a holiday home in the country. When I’m there, I feel like I finally can breathe and be free. It is a wonderful feeling! Your videos showed me that I should move after I graduate to a place where I can spend more time in nature to feel happier. Thank you for your amazing videos :)

I'm in the same situation but I find the hardest part is the way people respond when I tell them why. The most common response is to brush it off like it's nothing. @Peter Peterson I’d be the last person to virtue signal 🙄 in fact I lean far right in politics and not ashamed to admit it. You think because someone is European they shouldn’t be proud to embrace their ethnic pagan (or Christian) culture? Everyone has the right to be proud and promote their culture in their OWN COUNTRY. You may have your preference for middle Eastern girls and that’s fine but don’t judge another for who they’re attracted to because when you do that you are in fact the racist one.

@@GermanicJennifer there is something true in his comment. There is a difference between saying "you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen" and "you are the epitome of perfection and beauty" The first one emphasizes the "for me/myself" and the second one is more like "no other woman could ever look like you". And we usually can see how white people are the ones who get what compliment. "a goddess" "a god's beauty" "you looking like a greek goddess" or something like that.

It is you who are redefining the concept of family by forcing a link with reproduction, forgetting that humans are more complex than other animals on account of the unique intellectual attributes that set us apart and drive us. Its a very personal thing and also... We are talkng about bringing a human being... It should be something done when you are truly ready. I am mot getting those questions maybe because I am not 30yet but I imagine that must be very annoing, also I feel woman have a lot of other ways to express their love and femininity.

I loved your thoughts of the 'when are you having kids' question. As someone who cannot have a healthy pregnancy, you explained it so well! My body does not respond well to an increase of hormones, which results in lofe threatening blood clots to develop. I don't want to chance risking my life, and then to rely on medications injected into me to have a 'healthy' pregnancy. It's hard!

I always find it curious when people say “start a family” when it comes to the subject of children. I think a couple is a family, in itself already. 🤔 I get the pressure from my family about marriage and children even though I’ve tried to tell them that I don’t see those things for my future. I think people are so conditioned to expect people to begin a family at some point that they pretend it’s just a phase when you don’t want that. In some cases it might be, but it would be nice if people respected other people’s plans or lack of a plan and didn’t give such pressure. Anyways, thank you for all of your hard work on your filming and photography, Jonna! 😊🙏🏻

Thank you for your thoughtful commentary about having kids. It a very normal question to ask and I appreciate that you acknowledge that. I also, appreciate that you go into detail about how loaded that question is for women who both don’t want children and for women who can’t have children despite wanting to. Perhaps we should all consider the personal nature of this question and really ask ourselves if it is necessary to ask it or if we really know a person well enough to ask it.

@@patrickoshnock6925 so? That can have several causes and it doesn't have to be a bad thing, there's many countries that are overpopulated, if those people would move to countries where people don't get a lot of children, then that solves 2 problems at once. Besides that, I think your comment is quite rude, I could say the same about countries that have a lot of children that they are addicted to getting more. It's just rude to comment something like that. People can choose themselves if they want kids or not. Some are unlucky and can't get kids when they want to, and in some areas more people may choose for kids or choose for no kids or be unlucky to not be able to have kids. It doesn't have to be a bad thing

Q&A: I would like to know how you did the change from your old life to this one, in details. Meaning, for example, how did you project to leave the city? How much time has passed when the idea to move struck until the time you actually did it? Or did you save for a time? Did you have a plan before to go? Did you research in advance or did you up and go and figure it out along the way? Also, another thing I'd like to know is: you know how to do so many many things... I love and admire so much this trait of yours, you have no idea, from works with furniture, to filming, singing, playing, painting... my question is: did you already know some of these things before you moved, or did you learn when you moved? In the last 10 years? If so, how? You are so good, so talented... I feel I'm interested in a lot of things, and I would like to learn, but it seems I have so little time, and when I try the results are horrible anyway (like painting for example). How do you learn things? Sorry for the long comment, the last thing I want to say is this: it's more than a year I follow you and it's incredible how every single time I watch your video I feel deeply inspired to be more myself and to enjoy life to the fullest. Really, I thank you with all my heart. ❤

Manuela Pigna that is a bit more questions I would like to answer if I were in Jonna's shoes. She also explained a lot of this in her previous videos, in a nutshell if I remember correctly, she was going to college and working in the city and needed a break, her family owned a piece of land in the far North of Sweden with a semi dilapidated cabin, I believe relatives live nearby. After staying a while in the cabin she decided to quit living in the city and move to the cabin permanently. Like everyone she still had to make a living and began making videos. She had a knack for doing them, people liked them, she gained followers and made enough revenue to live on, she started doing different things and filming them, she and her husband have a website, she sells her paintings and her recordings, her husband makes hand made jewelry. Happy?

This world is too loud and it is sad that it is always a big deal if someone is introverted and quiet. Why can't society accept introverted as easily as it does extroverted? We definitely don't need to change for the world, the world needs to change its cruel standards and expectations and make a little room for us too. I wish you all the best on that road of acceptance!

I always felt the exact same way growing up. Now, I've learned to embrace that I am a good listener, and this is something that is very rare these days. Giving someone your undivided attention and really hearing them is very precious in our world of endless distractions. Also, I've learned that it is a waste of energy to wish to be something that I will never be (as a natural introvert) and I do not want to spend the rest of my life that way, when that same mental energy could be used to do constructive things like helping others. The person who is the right fit for you as a partner will embrace all aspects of you. I never thought I would find anyone either when I was younger and insecure about being introverted, but I am now in my late 20's and have been with my boyfriend for almost 5 years. He loves me as I am and it is wonderful.
