I built a modern dining table from live edge book matched myrtle burl slabs and inlaid traditional japanese kumiko panels in the asa no ha pattern. This live edge table is one of a kind and I've never seen a table with kumiko inlaid like this. All proceeds from the sale of this table benefit the Katz Moses Woodworkers with Disabilities Fund.

Your wife's response made me cry. She was excited that the table could be hers as seen when she asked that question; but her face literally lit up when you explained what you were doing. So...she's either a really good actress or she totally vibes with your philanthropic mindset. I think the 2nd is true, and it's a beautiful thing...even more beautiful than the masterpiece you created here.

Yeah, I'd guess he knows his wife very well. I don't think someone would give a charity donation as a gift for a loved one unless they knew it would be a gesture they'd appreciate. I've known people who wanted donations in place of gifts, and I've known people who would be upset they didn't get to keep something. Hard to start a family with someone and not know which camp they're in, lol

My Dad passed away 2012. He was an amazing woodworker/ craftsman. As he aged and his mind faded, I'd find him in his shop in tears. He knew what he wanted to make, but forgot how to do things he had been doing for 60+ years. I became his helper and provided gentle guidance when he "forgot how." He didn't use techniques like they did in the 1800s. But he was still a damn fine woodworker and craftsman. He loved learning new things and putting that knowledge into projects. For his final projects, the mind was quite faded. I was providing more and more guidance. But he was still the master woodworker. And i the assistant. Enjoy your craft. Dad would tell you to learn new things. Try weird projects. Take creative leaps of faith. Make your baby girl proud. Just as I am of my favorite craftsman and woodworker. (Those that say discouraging things - let their opinions fall to the floor like sawdust, sweep them up, and throw them out. Pay them no mind). You do amazing work. At the end of the day, when your head hits the pillow, know that the only opinions that truly matter are those of the two lovely ladies in your life. ❤

That is so awesome that you were able to help your Dad continue to do what he loved, despite his failing abilities. My own father was a Master Electrician, working at a huge plant that held large DOD contracts. In his later years, we learned he had Parkinson's Disease. I had purchased a small acreage with an old run-down house and was remodeling it. Dad wanted so much to help out with the wiring--he was able to help a little with different aspects of the job (he was good at all aspects, such as hanging sheetrock or installing shower stalls, etc.) but the wiring was really taxing for him, as it required climbing up into the attic space, and of course the big rolls of wire were a bit heavy and clunky to roll out and install. With the help of my brother, he was finally able to get it done though. I took so many pictures of my Dad and brother during that remodel, and as it turned out, it was the last project he was able to participate in. His shaking got so bad he couldn't drive, hold and use a tool, finally couldn't even feed himself or speak. Just watching his face, I could tell how it tortured him not to be able to join in the family discussions. Like you, I treasure those last weeks and months I had with my Dad, and the good times we had working on that old house.

@@custos3249 I suppose the arguement is that he's not a traditional wood worker. which is fine I guess but, the lines blur all the time. like knife makers or blacksmiths. they use power hammers all the time even if they don't go as far as to CNC our the knife shapes from a billet so they are still considered traditional even taking shortcuts like that.

@@thornyback I agree, if somebody wants to give money to charity, that´s awesome and if you know your spouse likes that kind of present and does not need the table - still awesome, go for it. But while I don´t know these people, just judging from the video, to me that gift felt more like a gift to himself than a gift for his partner. If it was a gift he could have asked her which good cause she actually wants to support with the money in her name. The way it was portrayed felt more like "Yeah I finally did this fun project I was looking forward to for ages and then I found this good cause *I* wanted to support, and then I realized I don´t have a present for my wife yet and here we are". Good intentions, really weird execution. But maybe they actually did communicate beforehand and it was her idea, so idk :D Also very nice table :)

He should have turned it into a feature instead of a patch. Choosing a unique, maybe more organic shape, mimik the japanese technique or even add a metal piece would have made it better. I would ask to redo that part and come up with something better. Even though it's for a good cause and it should be allowed to have imperfections to also show in the piece itself, that we are all valuable, I still don't like the way it's handled. Even our imperfections need to be properly cared for, for example people need to be given the right job, that they can enjoy with their capabilities, or provided the right tools, if they need special adjustments for example. It matters how we treat imperfections and we should provide the required care. He showed it 2-3 times towards the end, but the end result, when everything was polished etc. it didn't look good anymore. I would even have loved to keep the imperfection as it was at the beginning. Maybe filling it with clear epoxy would have done the job.

Quilling is the are of using thin paper strips to make beautiful things. When I do quilling I like to use 1 and 3 mm wide strips. When we use glue it is always the barest amount so I use a small bottle with a needle tip and PVA glued. If you were to do something like this again you could benefit from such a bottle. But to call it a Christmas gift is a little weird. Like, I don't need much, even if I just get a shoulder rub as a gift for Christmas, doesn't even need to cost anything. But you can't really call making your wife give something to someone else (even for charity) a gift lol. Then she gets the chair he won't use, and looks as happy as if he especially made it for her. She's a sweetheart... sigh.

There are no words to describe the beauty of this table and the skill you have to execute it. So a simple : " Well done Johnny" will have to suffice.

This table is amazing!! Especially for your first big kumiko project. Glad you found the sled and jigs were helpful in making it happen. I've been thinking of making a kumiko slab table for a while, and now it's moved up the list. By the way, you have a cool name too 😉

Definitely my favorite video yet. I hate using epoxy for river pours but this was wonderfully executed. The way you conducted the symphony of tools to make this masterpiece is super awesome and it is even better that its purpose will be to help disabled woodworkers. A true inspiration especially because you're not even a woodworker. 🤓

Awesome build! You have my respect and admiration for all the work and detail you put into this project. I noticed the Marine Corps flag on your wall that makes me suspect you are a brother Marine. Semper Fi, brother! By the way, just a little FYI: Epoxy resin can degrade and break down from UV rays from the sun if not covered with a coating that contains UV protection such as certain paints or if left bright, a good quality marine grade spar varnish (several coats) that contains such UV protection. I've been working with epoxies for many years (used to have a wooden boat shop on Cape Cod). Heat is also an enemy of epoxy (gets soft and loses strength). 👍👍👍

You did a spectacular job on this! I am so looking forward to learning more about this Japanese technique. Thank you for Sharing your work. You may not be a “professional” woodworker, but you do a great job, better than some of those who call themselves professionals. My husband and I are also “makers”. Just a FYI, Yes, people actually throw perfectly good tables into the landfill! Not just tables, lots of different furniture. We don’t have garbage pick up here so, we take trash and recyclable’s to a transfer station. Every week we pick up, wood, metal, plastic, sometimes fabric, or other miscellaneous things, and lots of perfectly good furniture. We bring it home, restore it, rebuild it, repair it, up cycle it, and then sell it so that it goes on for another life. And maybe, we save something from the landfill. Thank you again for Sharing your Inspiration, Thoughts and Talent.
