The first half of the kzbin.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

Instead of the complicated spring loaded dowel with cables and pulleys, you could have just made the dowel the axle attached to the locking bar. The mechanism would be simple and less likely to malfunction. A quick twist of the dowel lifts the bar and unlocks the door. If the length of the bar makes it awkward or too heavy to unlock by turning the dowel, adding a bit of counterweight would fix that.
@MandrakeDCR3 жыл бұрын
That sounds great until you have wood twisting inside of wood with weighted friction a few dozen times. So, you would still end up with the same amount of engineering since you'd need to get some bearings, match and countersink them for that purpose to prevent wear and still keep the outward appearance correct, keeping it internally locked in position so you don't need a limiting washer on the outside identifying which one it is, etc. Either way is fine, the way they did it is just simple, cheap, and it's a fun mechanism.

Not to mention, you're still talking about a lot of extra detail work for no good reason other than 'for the sake of it'. If you're going to do that, then just simplify it and do a magnet catch. For a closet, since the plywood looks to be paint grade, I'd stain it or paint it. Leaving it raw, gives it a basement furniture vibe to me.

The thing about hidden rooms that everyone seems to forget is ventilation. There is NO fresh air coming into that room. There are enough holes in that setup to let some oxygen in but it is going to be stuffy as hell. You need some AC venting in there or 1-2 people will roast each other from their own body heat and the humidity from their breath. You don't even need a full-sized vent, just a small one made out of that foil slinky tubing that people use to connect their dryers to outside air, and a vent tacked onto the end where it comes out of the wall. If your AC installers used that square fiberglass duct board crap, be sure to shut off the AC first and then vacuum out around the hole inside and out. You don't want fiberglass fibers blasting out of your vents.
