I'll show you how to build a DIY concrete river table / concrete coffee table. Check out squarespace.com/jonnybuilds to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code JONNYBUILDS.
This week I'll show you how I built a round concrete "river" coffee table using conventional Quikrete concrete, rebar, and a welded steel 3 legged base. If you don't have access to a welder you could make a version of this concrete coffee table by wiring the rebar together and using hairpin legs for the base. To create the river pottion of this concrete river table I used a foam insulation cut out to create a knockout within the concrete form. I placed a rebar grid on top of that form during the pour, and chiseled through the concrete slab to reveal the rebar within the table.

I know I'll get questions about what happens if your coffee cup falls through the cut out, or why didn't I fill it with resin, so I'll address that here. First, this table is 30 inches wide, and the cut out is about 4 inches wide. That's 26 inches of usable space which is wider than most coffee tables. Second, filling this with clear resin would be needlessly expensive, and have a high likelihood of things going wrong combining construction grade concrete and epoxy. Finally, it just wouldn't look good. That said I do think combining this style concrete river table with a glass insert would be awesome, but that's an idea I'm saving for a future build. Thanks for watching, and I forgot to add the watch to the end word...😬. Comment "Ouch" if you watched 'til the end!

Your video inspired me to build one of my own, with a twist. Instead of a river, I cut my foam into the letter "H". I will be giving the table to my in-laws who's last name starts with the letter "H". I bought a masonry bit for my impact drill to create the holes in between the rebar in the letter, but I was burning though batteries too quickly. I switched to an air chisel and it worked great. Very easy to control and do some precision chiseling. I will be etching the remaining letters into the surface of the concrete to spell out their name. I completed the stand build yesterday. I angle cut the top corners as you did, but i ended up making them a constant, smooth curve. Thanks for the videos!

Perhaps a partial Resin fill on the hole would work? Invert the table, seal as needed (PP Sheet & Hotglue?) then add maybe just 1/2in of resin or maybe 1in so that the hole isn't completely filled. You get a 'complete' table surface, while still seeing the whole hole and exposed rebar. Having literally just done a river table myself and winced at the cost of the resin I calculated in the pour... yeah, I can see why you didn't! - Ouch!

Really cool table, love the design. Would it have been easier to use 2 pieces of foam and sandwich the rebar with the ends out into the table? That way there only chiseling you need to do is clean up and the cosmetic stuff. Thoughts?
@JonnyBuilds
@JonnyBuilds 4 жыл бұрын
Seems easier in theory, but in practice would cause more issues. Lining up the foam inserts would be next to impossible during the concrete pour. Keeping the foam from floating up would have required extra framing to hold it down. You would still have to do the majority of the chiseling to give it the more organic appearance.

Ouch indeed. Hope the back bounced back, Johnny. Killer build. Curious - did you apply the same treatment to the rebar as you did the steel base? Could you apply it before pouring the concrete? PITA to do it after. This and your Makesgiving waterfall table are on my shortlist for a patio table. But if used outdoors would be great to limit rust on the rebar.

This table arrived well packaged and on time. kzbin.infoUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!
