Of all the things I was impressed with in this game our ability to contain an elite mobile QB was the best! For YEARS I have watched us rush Kamikaze Style for mobile QBS only to watch in horror as they slipped by, threatened the edge and either ripped off 15 yards running it or passed to wide open receivers after 10 seconds of coverage. Thanks for the vid Johnny! This is the one I've waiting for.
@paulreyes62219 ай бұрын
It helps that Steve Wilks has coached on teams with mobile QBs so he knew what he wanted to do.
@Wolfeson289 ай бұрын
Definitely key to this win, and it's also important that we've established this model for handling mobile QBs. With Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson coming up on the schedule, plus the possibility of seeing Hurts and/or Jackson again in the playoffs, this is a challenge we're going to face again.

Those Russell Wilson escapes from his Seahawk days still bring back horrible memories
@Ishai19 ай бұрын
I remember in past seasons Bosa would pass rush to get a sack on a mobile QB and that QB would just scramble away for a big gain. It was so frustrating. He said after the game the strategy wasn't to sack the QB but to do exactly what you described. Making him feel the pressure but give him no open lanes to escape. Wilks really leveled up the play of our secondary. This defense is now great in all three levels, not just the front seven
@brianderhen93929 ай бұрын
I feel like this was a problem going back to Russell Willow under Harbaugh's teams. Pass rush might win but the QB would use the vacated space as a running lane. Extremely frustrating. I wonder if this is the first time they actively decided on this approach. Honestly, it seems like the obvious strategy once you know the problem is there, although pulling it off with tight coverage for 5+ seconds was the true win here. I don't know how repeatable that is.
@mrchuckles10229 ай бұрын
The discipline of the pass rush and Warner as a spy (who knew darn well where the 1st down marker + tush push was) was incredibly impressive. The restraint of the refs not to call PI multiple times but paying attention to the defender’s technique was equally surprising and impressive. Another superior breakdown. I also love the details like their HOS catching Hurts’ throwaway or Warner going for an Oscar. Coupled with Christian’s acting on Fletcher Cox’s “throw-down”, I sure hope the Niners aren’t teaching flopping as a strategy. That would be disappointing.

Ambry Thomas improving in coverage and moving Lenior to the slot has really made this pass defense so much better from the secondary perspective; without Oliver filling in as the nickel, I would like to see them throw in more man-coverage to take away the quick game that offenses tend to do to mitigate the Niner's pass rush.
@plantfeeder66779 ай бұрын
49er run defense was stellar in this game. Making them one dimensional and then shutting down that one dimension is 49er winning football the way I remember Bill Walsh doing it. Great catch seeing who caught the ball out of bounds from Hurts.😂
@gibster96249 ай бұрын
11:40 For that Thomas PBU some were crying for a flag on, I just want to point out that Thomas had textbook technique when he got to the receiver. He got chest to chest, both hands inside and then just mirrored whatever the receiver did. As a receiver being taught what to do in those situations the absolute last thing you do is let a defender get into your chest. It's nearly impossible to make a catch. This was the difference in the Aiyuk TD vs the Jaguars in the end zone that Kyle said was Purdy's worst decision. You see Aiyuk take advantage of his freaky long arms and ices the DB and it made it all too easy for him to make the catch uncontested.

9:45 What I like about the contain not pursue rush is that it forced Hurts to stay in the pocket and run through his progressions, while the receivers are not sure if he's in trouble and don't even try to get open.

Playing Ambry instead of Oliver may be the key that unlocked the defense, and Steve has the DBs playing the best they ever have under Kyle. Steve's been personally coaching the DBs. Steve had a great game plan, especially the unselfish pass rush setting their depth correctly and not giving up the edge to the QB. Javon Hargrave played very well. He really seemed comfortable playing against his old scheme, and was put in a position to succeed by Steve and Chris. We have vastly more talent on defense than the Eagles, same as offense, especially QB, and we very clearly outcoached them on both sides of the ball.

So is there any reasonable explanation as to why Lane Johnson gets off the snap too early without being called for false start? Just looking at him, with pass protection, it seems most of the time he's moving/twitching before Kelce moves sometimes it's really close in which case I kind of understand, but every single time he is moving before never after. The biggest lie I hear is "he just times it perfectly" but looking back at tape you see he's always early or indeed perfect, I have to imagine refs are reviewing tape too but they haven't nailed him except on REALLY obvious cases, but even without the benefit of slow motion/pausing there are a number of times where you see him twitch, rock, move his leg before the ball is snapped and that's in real time. Other than "timing it perfectly" is there some movement that is legal to make that he's doing?

Jonny, I loved your analysis of the Niners’ Defence. However, have you seen Kurt Warner’s take on what happened on Sunday? If not, seek it out of NFL Network. He focuses on how Jalen Hurts plays, pointing out that, despite having time and space to make many key plays, Hurts weirdly doesn’t pull the trigger. From the clips used by Warner, the Niners’ defence was more vulnerable than we imagine, with various Eagles open at crucial moments, although not spotted by Hurts. Had that been Purdy playing for the Eagles, the result would have been a lot closer. In fact, I spent most of the game wondering who the QB was for the Eagles, concluding that, like Vladimir Putin, Hurts was using a body double, one that looked like him, played like he does sometimes, but not seeing open receivers for plays on end. Whilst watching the game live, I also couldn’t understand why Philly’s O-line was so good at holding our pass rush at bay. On occasions, Hurts had so much time that he could have read a newspaper before attempting a pass. Were the Eagles tackles, guards, and centre really THAT good that they could prevent multiple sacks from taking place? I did wonder whether what I was watching was a deliberate plan, as you hinted at in the video, in that our pass rushers seemed to want to hold up the D-line rather than rush Hurts, almost as if they were waiting for him to try and scramble, but by creating a pocket around him they were effectively walling him in. The defence played great, but don’t anybody believe they are super humans. If Warner spotted how our players could be beaten, other offensive coordinators surely will.
@JP-sd4qc9 ай бұрын
Well I doubt they'll play other qbs the same way they'll play Jalen. Coming in it was said that Hurts was a bad processor and didn't do so well if you pushed him into his 3rd and 4th read. It looks like this was the right strategy
@barryx239 ай бұрын
I would recommend all Niner fans watch JT O'Sullivan's analysis of Jalen Hurts' performance in this game on his The QB School page on YT. Commenting on the Eagles, he notes, "Too many plays this game felt forced, muddy, blurry, missed." And this was in respect of Hurts' first and second reads, where he missed open receivers. JTO observes that it didn't look like a 100% Jalen Hurts in this game. However, while he concedes it wasn't just one thing that was wrong it was "QB-centric". He's also critical of Hurts in not overriding Kelce's coverage calls, although concedes that, overall, the problem isn't Kelce's but rather Hurts' or the system. Another quote from JTO was, "None of it makes any sense". Bizarrely, he's also critical of Philly's O-line effort on occasions! From watching live, I thought they played fine, but that's why these breakdowns are fascinating. Why this and Warner's breakdowns are relevant is that, when the Niners come to play the Eagles again, it won't be the same cake walk as this time around. As for Hurts being an MVP candidate, Phah! based on this performance.

JD.I don’t think the d was as dominant as the score projected. Especially on the backend. I saw too many open receivers on tape. Either from lack of execution or break in coverage rules. Only reason it wasn’t a positive for Philly was bc JH forgot to how to play qb.He repeatedly looked at open WR but decided not to throw only to stand in or escape the pocket. If I’m wilks, I see that tape and say boy did we get lucky that JH didn’t want to throw to open guys. If I’m Philly I’m like damn we had too many failed chances. Idk. I think the next match up will be dog fight. I think Philly will commit to the run and JH will learn how to play qb. I feel the 49er dline will have to be more aggressive the next time. All coverages have time limits. Our secondary can’t cover in-defiantly. I think the key to another dub is the offense getting a lead and scoring frequently. Forcing Philly to play from behind. Thoughts? ❤ the show brother

Also, the rules say that he can move his back foot early, as long as his front foot doesn’t move and the suddenness of his movement doesn’t disturb the D line. So there is a split second window where he can pop his back foot and by the time the defense reacts, the ball is off the ground. Lane Johnson has mastered this timing window. It’s amazing, frankly.
