Those are humbuckers for sure. They may be stacked coils. The coil tap works just like for a guitar humbucker by bypassing one of the 2 coils on whatever pick-up you have chosen, or both. That's why it sounds like a single coil when you pull the tone pot up, because it is. Later versions have 8 pole pieces instead of 4 but they all are humbuckers. Just like a Seymore Duncan single coil sized "hot-rails" pickup for a Strat. Very nice Bass. I have a newer model but it's basically the same. Has 5 neck bolts instead of four now, but no plate.
@superheavydeathmetal4 ай бұрын
Technically speaking, what you are describing is "coil-split", not "coil tap", although the two are use synonymously now, because true coil-tapping is pretty rare any more. You are correct in that you can only split a humbucker. But, you can coil-tap anything. Coil tapping is when you bypass some of the windings of a pickup, effectively making the pickup lower-output and more vintage-like. Why do I bring this up? Because this bass may very well have true single-coil pickups with coil-tapping, so that it can provide a more modern sound with high-output, but also have the option of a more vintage sound for those who prefer that. Then again, you could very well be correct that it has stacked humbuckers with a coil-split. That seems more likely, really. Or, it could just be a series/parallel switch. That is the simplest and lowest-cost option.

I love the way this bass sounds and the way it looks, this bass really hits the nail on the head when it comes to style and sound. I want a bass that will give me the Phil Lynott sound from his Thin Lizzy days, then if I want to jump to the Lemmy Kilmister sound from Motorhead this might get me close.

the push pull may be a series/parallel for both mics, this usually lowers the output around a 20% and gives more top end, maybe you could percieve that as a lower bass output

Coil split and coil tap are often used interchangeably but can mean different things. A coil split splits a humbucker into a single coil. But a coil split works like you’re taking winds off the coil, which shaves off some low end and output. You can coil tap a single coil but not coil split it.
@JonnyDibble4 жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the insight man! 😊

You can only coil SPLIT a humbucker, but you can coil TAP any pickup. A coil split is where you have two coils and you shut one coil off to turn it into a single coil. Obviously it's magnets are still on which has an effect on the the coil that is still "live" so you don't realllllllly get single coil tones, but it gets very close. A coil TAP is where the pickup sort of has two outputs to the rest of the circuit. One is at what you could consider the end of the pickup, after all the windings, and the other is maybe 2/3 of the way along the windings. Less windings means less output (meaning less gain) and generally a less pronounced mid-range. Splits are used to make a humbucker sound like a single coil. Taps are used to lower the output and get a more "vintage" tone. This bass sounds like it has a coil tap to me, personally. People don't really use coil taps all that much, and coil splitting gets called coil tapping a lot, in the same way. It's sort of how we call Flloyd Roses and Bigsbys etc "tremolo arms" or "tremolos" when it actually has nothing at all with a tremolo, which is a movement back and forth across the stereo field and not a pitch related effect.

That Bass sounds quite good and all - BUT what amp are you putting it through - what type of pickups does it have - what is the quality of the soldering and shielding - what is the quality of the cord you are using and it is the right cord etc . . ( impedance ) etc . . there are SO many variables. And so the sound you are getting is probably largely the result of your amp and equipment. I personally have purchased two Glarry basses off eBay - both at about $ 65 SHIPPED - ( not kidding - and currently they are $ 82 shipped ) AND amazingly / surprisingly - they are really good sounding - quality basses. I know it sounds unbelievable - but it's true. My guess is these Schecter basses you are showing are probably $ 299-499 or in that range. $ 65 shipped to my house is blowing that right out of the water. In fact - the first Glarry I bought is the EXACT same style and color - jazz - black body - red pick guard. And so when you say "ultimate reasonably priced jazz bass" - I think the Glarry's you can get right now off eBay are by far the ultimate LOW priced Jazz Bass. And I can get 1 in each of the 4 colors they offer and still be close to the the price of JUST ONE of those Schecters. You can even watch several youtube videos reviewing the Glarry's.

Great video. Schecter makes some incredible quality instruments for the price. I have two currently ( Model T and a Baron H ) and the construction is spot on. Did your Model T have Seymour Duncan pickups in it? The one I have is a newer version with EMG’s. I’m underwhelmed with these pickups. I’m thinking about replacing the pickups and preamp and going with a passive setup. I keep looking at the Geezers. Obviously still EMG, but with a lot more growl than the stock pickups.

The push/pull pot might well be a series (in) and parallel (out), but a parallel wiring scheme for a passive bass is about as useful as a square wheel. Or Donald Trump. Either way the Delano-looking pickups sound great. Hifi and aggressive.
