That burner tube comes out they are usually held in by 2 screws. the one you took out that was in front and one near the back of the burner. then just lift it up and out, first disconnect the wires from underneath. makes it a lot easier changing the igniter. easier to get at the screws. plus you don't have to twist the wires together that's probably why it didn't reach the safety valve.

Jonny...Couple helping comments for Whirlpool. Hardest part was running igniter cable through insulation to connection on the back of the range. There's a small plate that covers the gas orifice inside the oven. Remove the one screw and plate. Don't remove defective cable and igniter at first so you can use it to help run new cable through. ALSO, shine your flashlight where cable enters insulation inside the oven. Then you can clearly see where the cable goes as you look from the back of the range! So simple but a massive help in fishing new igniter cable through insulation to connection on the back of the range. People online complain about how confusing it can be getting the new cable to the connection.

Thank you for this informative video. I have about two yeas of tinkering with washers and dryers, but I haven't worked on ranges at all. I'm preparing to do a similar job, so I wanted to get eyes on the disassembly and part replacement. I really appreciate your attention to detail. If I may, I'd like to point out that the igniter fails not because it doesn't get hot enough, but because it goes out of spec. As the igniter heats up, its resistance drops, thus it's amperage increases. In order to heat the bimetal in the gas valve it needs to reach a certain current (3.3 amps in valves that I have seen) in order to flex the gas valve bimetal which opens the gas valve. Just a little tidbit I thought I would pass on. So, you can see an igniter glowing and not lighting because its resistance hasn't decreased enough for the current to reach the specified amperage. That being said, I want to thank you for showing me how to execute this operation!

Hi Johnny. I realize it's Easter weekend and you're likely busy doing easter-like things but...., but I guess I should give you a heads up on a few things...,A: I am a 62 year old grammy who has "0" knowledge or experience repairing anything electrical but B: I truly can't afford to hire an appliance guy to come out so it's all on me. Now having just watched your (absolutely fantastic!) video on replacing an oven ignitor I'm thinking "hey, I can do that" and so here I go but..., I have a few questions and may have more as this repair moves forward. Ok so I'm working on a Kenmore gas range, model #790.7851 on which the oven may or may not heat. Meaning over the last 6 months it has heated up a few times but the last attempt I'd turned it on but after waiting about an hour for it to heat I just turned it off. The time before that it had heated but took about half an hour to heat and then if I changed the temperature (up or down) it would go down to it's lowest heat and would not budge from that temperature. I'm merely guessing that it's the ignitor AND like I said, after watching your vid I think I can do this. 👉🏽👉🏽🤷🏽♀Can I get the ignitor at Home Depot? (Ignitor, oven burner part #316428500, taken from the parts repair list for this oven)..., and "Shoot!" I've forgotten what my other "?" were. Lucky you, guess you're off the hook for now😉😉 BTW I swear I'm not some crazy just hoping to mess with you, I am who I say I am (for better or worse).If for whatever reason you can't help (any further than your great video) that's totally copasetic. I'll figure it out, may take awhile longer but eventually I'll get there. Sorry for the REaLLy lOnG comment, it's a grandmother thing having far too many words✌🏽👋🏽

Sounds like the igniter going out. I'd just replace it, yes. I usually order online from anywhere who has them, amazon, ebay, or appliance parts supplier. You may even be able to get one locally if have one of those appliance repair shops. Yes you can use owner's manual to identify replacement but I'd probably look at one in there to make sure matches before ordering. Have a nice Easter weekend 👍

am I good to use the stove top burners while waiting for part after disassembling to get the bad oven igniter out?
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
Yes you're fine. I would put some wire nuts on ends or wrap each end of the exposed wires to the igniter if you got that far though 👍

Great video. What do you do if your pilot light will light, but not the oven will not kick out any gas from that long central burner? Thanks!

So you have a gas fire pilot light that stays lit all the time but flame tube wont light?
@milesaway3422 Жыл бұрын
@@JonnyDIY correct! It’s a Vulcan 60L if that helps.
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
@@milesaway3422 I believe those use a thermocouple that decides to open the gas. I would start there by either testing or just replacing 👍

@@JonnyDIY nuts. I had it replaced. I thought the thermocouple was for the pilot to stay on?
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
@@milesaway3422 no it's there to determine pilot light is lit so it'll open the gas. May be dirty or bent away from pilot light. Can try cleaning and see if helps

We have a thor kitchen range. We replaced the double safety valve, and the broiler now works, but, bake does not work... we have ordered the replacement igniter...to test the bake, wouldn't the flame tube light up with a torch, even if the igniter does not?
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
The igniter must be working to open the gas up, so you'll have to wait to test it or use a multimeter to test it's resistance

Thanks so much!!!! my husband was convinced that he had installed the new valve incorrectly...after your reply he is more confident that the new igniter will work!!!!

Do you have to remove the door to remove the bottom?
@JonnyDIY16 күн бұрын
@@foolishgenius No you can leave the door, it just makes it 10x easier to work on without it on. I've done it both ways 👍

Jonny i have a samsung less than 5yrs old, From time to time we smell some gas from the oven and it does not or should say it takes forever to come up to the preheat temp. What do you think this issue would be?
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
Igniter going out could cause this. May want to try cleaning the flame tube as well as build up of soot can affect it as well 👍

@MoLewis57 Жыл бұрын
Great video. I see that that ignitor lights the flames next to it and then the rest of the flames are lit in a domino effect. We have an issue where we started to smell gas *only* when the oven was on ( we stopped using oven after noticing this ). I’m wondering if it is possible for some of those gas outlets on the bottom of the oven to be clogged so badly that most of the flames light, but a clogs keep some flames from lighting which means that nothing lights the gas outlets next to it, so gas is released without burning. In other words, if the are 10 holes next to each other with gas coming out of them, and the gas is ignited at holes 1-7, but 8 and 9 are clogged, then gas will be coming out hole 10 without igniting. Thanks

Sounds possible, I would open it up and light the oven and see whats going on with the flame tube when oven on. An inexpensive gas leak detector like this, may help a lot in diagnosing as well 👍 amzn.to/3Rb1ves

hi! my oven doesn't preheat occasionally. often it works fine, but sometimes it sits at the base temp (150 degrees) for like an hour or two before heating up. the igniter seems to be glowing even when this happens. I just removed all the covers so I can see what is happening more clearly, but it hasn't had the issue today yet. any thoughts? can an igniter be faulty sometimes, but not others, does this seem to most likely be the problem? thank you so much
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
The igniter should only glow and be on to light the flame tube. So if it's staying on later for a while it may be bad. You may also want to check the "temperature probe"
@valerieholze9956 Жыл бұрын
thanks! I replaced the igniter and it's preheating well now, but the oven smells like burning plastic, which it didn't before. thoughts?@@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
@@valerieholze9956 🤔hmm double check the work you did and make sure no wires or anything getting burned. It shouldn't be though. I'd double check then if nothing, see if it burns off and was just new igniter

Just a quick question so does the igniter stay on when the oven has lit it stays on the whole time or just to light it and then goes off or it stays on can you confirm thanks
@JonnyDIY11 ай бұрын
It usually goes on and off I believe. As it has to relight the flame tube as the temperature goes up and down
