Thank you for the detailed video! I have an S4 with the symptoms you describe. I performed a study of capacitors on the main board and found one with both terminals connected to ground with less than one Ohm resistance. This was in the vicinity of the volume buttons oddly enough, on the opposite side of the board where the shielded power supply section is where you made your repair. I removed the shielding anyway and examined all caps, but in all cases no more than one terminal had low resistance to ground. So it is looking like I just have the one bad cap. Now I just have to dig into an old phone or two to see if I can find a similar cap, or I supposed I can remove the cap, measure its dimensions precisely, and go looking for a form factor & color match at DigiKey.
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 8 жыл бұрын
+hines1957 Or remove it and see if phone works. Not all caps are needed. If it's not supporting a main power rail you may get away without it. If you can't figure out the value I have found a similar size seems to be enough. If on a main power rail tho you should measure the voltage to make sure it's stable. If not, it needs to be a higher value.

+Jonny Fix Thanks Jonny, good call. I know these caps are typically used to shunt noise to ground at a frequency related to the capacitance. I designed FPGA-based fiber optic comms boards at my last job, and with few exceptions I used caps to eliminate noise. I no longer have access to all the nice rework equipment and materials at work, so the main challenge now will be to replace the component for minimal cost. I like the idea of trying to get away without replacing the cap and if I can't find a suitable replacement in one of my old phones then I'll give that a try, but I would feel more comfortable if I could scope the signal to see how bad the noise is. I miss my National Instruments workstation. I suspect I can use the component dimensions with DigiKey product filters to get a range of possible values, then I can measure the capacitance of caps I salvage from old phones and pick one near the middle of the range.

I'd rather use a thermal imaging camera but only because it's a neat toy :) Heat is the easiest tell tale sign of where the fault may be although you don't want to confuse it with something running warm normally like CPU or regulator.

Same exact symptoms. I plugged my phone into a shorted cable for about a week (it was retired so I just let sit plugged in for the next time I need it... well then it would not recognize the battery charge and refused to turn on unless it was plugged into the wall. It even gets hot when I plug it in without a battery!

Im kinda curious what kind of heat gun you were using and what that goo was that you were using to desolder? I got a GS4 in for repair but I cant quite get it to do anything. Battery, albeit slow at first, charges via my own GS4 Active, but the GS4 is just dead as a door nail. Im wondering if something similar to what you did would help me, as appose to my normal "Buy a new board" approach.
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 9 жыл бұрын
343eric The station I use is this www.jaycar.co.nz/Tools-%26-Soldering/Soldering/Stations/ESD-Safe-Solder-Desolder-Rework-Station/p/TS1574 . The goo is flux paste which is more useful when re-attaching parts, probably not totally necessary on removing small part but can help with larger SMDs as it can conduct the heat into the joints. Perhaps put your GS4 onto a bench supply and see how much current it wants to draw, or put an ammeter in series with supply if it has none. If nothing (I'd expect about 400mA or more during boot up), check for voltage on the power switch and that the switch is OK with an ohm meter. The part I removed at 14:30 is a capacitor, almost always brown in colour, the larger part just above that and grey looking is an inductor. One side of every inductor will connect to a cap and will have a voltage on it when turned on. If you get a small current draw when you turn phone on maybe test each inductor and see if one has no voltage (e.g. 1.2, 3.3, 5) if it's steady it's probably what it should be, if it's fluctuating or has none check for a short to ground on that line. Obviously any physical damage like corrosion from liquid or burnt items will need to be addressed first. Good luck!

Hi again.. After reading more comments, I found your answer about testing the capacitors. Although it would be nice to see a new video explaining the procedure further. Another question: I have an S4 gt-i9506 and it appears that the power ic is bad. It won't turn on or even show the charging while off. The major problem is that the chip has PM894 on it and I only find PM8941 for Samsung S4 i9505 even on Google. Are PM894 and PM8841 interchangeable? Regards
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 3 жыл бұрын
I had a look and 894 doesn't seem to exist so I wonder do you have a microscope? Could it be the 1 has faded off the end? If the phone is not important (data etc) and if the 8941 connection layout is the same it could be worth just trying it. Otherwise if you need the data I would get a known good board from another phone and take the chip off that and reball it for yours.
@ssadda6626
@ssadda6626 3 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyFix Thanks for your reply. I used a magnifier. You are right, I missed the 1. I will attempt to replace it with pm8941 and see what happens. It's data I am hoping to retrieve. The phone becomes unusually warm when I put the battery in while turned off! I hope that this ci is the main cause.

How do you check those small capacitor and know for sure that they are good or bad? What is the capacitance etc.
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 8 жыл бұрын
A capacitor should have high resistance. If you have negative meter probe on ground (any metal shield) you can use positive probe on each side to test. If meter has a low resistance beep function this is handy as you can quickly touch on each one and only one side should beep. Keep in mind if you get a beep on both it might not be that cap is bad but something on the same circuit pulling it to ground. The actual capacitance isn't important until you're replacing it, then you need some reference. Main rail caps are often in groups of same value so you can measure one of the others and use same value, will probably be fine.

great video, I have a weird problem with my S4 i9500, I changed the screen couple of months ago and after that I started noticing that the coverage sometimes is lost, other times the coverage bars are full, but I can't receive or make calls and no 3G or EDGE connection. I fix it by twisting the phone a little bit, or pressing hard on the back. I opened it multiple times checked the antenna cable but with no luck. do you have any advice for me ?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 8 жыл бұрын
+abdumka take the back off, you will see small gold springy contacts that touch spots on the back. Make sure these aren't squashed down so they can't make contact, if so you should be able to pull them up gently. Also clean them and the back contacts with alcohol as oil/dirt from your fingers may have got on them. Also the thin blue coax (seen running down the side of phone at 2:56) is critical. You need to be careful not to damage the connector on each end or the socket it goes in to. They are very small so it's easy to do, usually when you're trying to put it back on.

thank you so much johnny, after a lot of trail and error I found out that the problem is with the frequency IC, I found out that when I apply pressure above the SIM and under the 2 copper contacts the phone finds network, at the beginning I thought its the sim card reader, I almost bought one, but then I discovered that the pressure has to be on the IC below it. I;m not sure I can replace it myself

if you find wich line is the shorted why didn't connect the voltage there. you removed the second and third capacitor totaly unnecessarily, why didn't you check that line is shorted or not? if you would use freezer spry and connect the voltage(4,2v that line is the vsys) to the first capacitor wich you removed you would have found the shorted capacitor in just few second.

Hi Jonny, great video! Can you, please, help me? My phone randomly turned off and now is completely dead. The last time that I turned it on I noticed that when I connected the charger the telephone didn't charge. After that It turned off definitely. (I controlled charger and battery and they are ok) . If I press the power button It begins to overheat the part near the camera. I brought it to a center and they said that I need to change the motherboard. I know that sometimes they don't really change it but just repair it. So, in your opinion, this problem could depend on a specific part of the motherboard that I could try to repair "with my own hands"? Thanks a lot for your help!

@JonnyFix

Yes because you're effectively replacing everything. It makes me wonder if there's a problem with one of the power rails relating to the sim or if the switch inside the sim slot has a bad connection.

I'm having problem with my S4, It has a completely new battery and I changed the motherboard in an effort to fix the problem, Which it did. Now I have a seperate issue whereas my phone wont turn on. It begins to recognise when I plug it the charger in but then the screen goes blank. Same happens when I try and turn it on. It will be vibrating quite a lot but not getting past opening samsung screen. I am unable to boot into Safe mode or Recovery mode, it seems to go to a blank screen before it gets that far. Im convinced its a hardware issue. What would you recommend replacing? The daughterboard? It was working fine directly after the motherboard change so im confused as whats happened now.. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 7 жыл бұрын
Hard to know. Vibrate is software controlled and I doubt a corrupt software would cause that to vibrate a lot so I'm thinking liquid damage? Power is getting to places it shouldn't. Multiple hardware failures would be unusual without a common cause like that. Maybe something else causing power supply to become unstable.

Hello - I have a galaxy s4 that fell from my windshield mount in my car. It only fell about a foot or less and it restarted itself. Once it came back on it got stuck on the Verizon screen and no matter what I've done it won't go past it to boot up completely. I've tried everything i know to do. I sent it into a company who told me I needed a chip off recovery to get my data off of it. Before I sent it in i tried a factory reset, which i know wipes the phone clean but that the data can still be recovered since it hasn't been written over. My question is, is a chip off recovery how you would fix this? Can it in fact be recovered even though I did the reset? any info you can share with me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Depends why it died. If the memory chip(s) died and the only way to fix it is replace that chip then you will lose everything. If their only way to fix it is replace the entire board and thus claiming wiped memory as they would need to in order for you to know it didn't come from someone elses phone then maybe your board is repairable by a more advanced workshop. I am in NZ.

@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 9 жыл бұрын
Mulder Yin I guess you have a new connector so a couple of ways, 1 -use hot air to melt the solder and lift off old connector, 2- use solder wick to soak up as much as you can (put some fresh solder on each connection first) then gently start lifting from one end as you heat the nearest pad working your way along as they lift off, 3 - blob a lot of solder between each connection so eventually you join them all together so the heat can melt them all at once then lift off and clean up excess, 4 - cut away the plastic so each contact becomes separate then desolder each one. Probably 1, 3 or 4 in that order if you can until one of them works. Any method that puts some physical strain on the pads risks lifting them off the board. Good luck.

Sorry, don't know how you can recover your photos unless they were saved to SSD card you can take out and put in a computer to read them off. You might be able to get your phone working by doing a factroy reset. While off, hold home - vol up - power. When it turns on release only power. You will see a menu, scroll with vol buttons and use home to select wipe data/factory reset. You will lose all apps and data. If phone still doesn't boot they might be right about the RAM.

Peter Dawson After being accidentally dunked in salt water for about a minute my Galaxy S4 appeared to be dead. I immediately took the back off and took out the battery, sd & sim cards and dried it out as much as possible. About 24 hours later it was still dead, so I went online and followed instructions I found to submerge the phone in 99.8% isopropyl alcohol for 2 hours and then dry it out as much as possible and leave it overnight to dry. The next day I charged it with the damaged battery and the screen came on but I had no sound. I tried it with a newer battery but nothing changed. I then decided to submerge it again in a fresh bath of the alcohol and left it for two hours shaking it gently from time to time to help the dissolve any remaining salt. I then left it outside in the sun for a little while and then left it for overnight in a sealed plastic container full of uncooked rice. I then left it to charge (again with the old battery) and this morning sound had returned and, after re installing my SD card and Sim card, I could use the internet, take and view my photos, listen to my music library, connect to wifi & bluetooth and connect to 'location'. The only thing I can't do is connect to my phone provider. Hence no phone calls or text messages! I have tried using my wife's sim card but the problem remains. Any ideas on what else I might do?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 7 жыл бұрын
Check the sim slot contacts are completely clean. There is also a switch at the back of the slot that tells phone a card is inserted so if this isn't functioning/dirty it might not try to read the card as it thinks there isn't one. Could also be a power issue or other damage to the baseband circuit. Really need microscope with 10x or more zoom to look for damage. It may not be too easy to see where having been cleaned.

I have a GS4 that keeps restarting during the reboot. I tried replacing the battery and the power button with no effect. Sometimes, it locks up instead of restarting. Sometimes, it turns on by itself. Sometimes, it freezes during the bootup process and the screen slowly lights up all yellow. Any ideas?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 8 жыл бұрын
+Martin Michalak try without any SD cards installed. Also you could try a hard/factory reset, turning it on with the volume and home buttons to do it. If it has not suffered liquid damage monitor the voltage rails during boot to make sure they are stable. If not that it's a more serious failure.
@martinmichalak3938

+Jonny Fix Thank you very much for the reply. I took the motherboard out to see if I could find anything burned out just by inspection. I tried running the phone while it was disassembled and it was much more stable. Booted up all the way. Ran for several minutes without locking up. As I was reassembling it, I tested it at each step. As soon as I snapped the casing back on, it started locking up on the samsung logo again. Disassembled and reassembled a few more times. Same result each time. Frequently boots all the way while disassembled (still crashes after a few minutes). Crashes immediately once the casing is back on. I could be wrong, but the specific part of the casing the causes the rapid crashes seems to be near the volume buttons. Maybe a loose component or something? I looked pretty carefully and didn't see anything. The other thing that affects the crashes is how long the battery has been out of the device. Removing the battery and letting it sit for awhile allows the device to get further into its boot before restarting. Seems like the longer you take the battery out for, the longer it takes to crash. This makes me think it's either a capacitor or a battery problem. No liquid damage, and the sd card is already out.

+Martin Michalak That is an interesting effect. It is possible the case is slightly flexing the board enough to break a weak solder joint that otherwise connects when apart. Run it apart and very gently flex different areas until it fails. Firmly support the area you don't want to flex to concentrate the movement only where you want it. Finding the exact component will be tricky but if you get the area you could apply some flux then go over it with hot air until all the joints are molten. Hopefully it's not under a large BGA chip.

Hello, what a foolish search. Unfortunately the heating principle was not conclusive. I wanted to know if it was possible to send a motherboard of a mini S4. I can not determine the damaged component. And I wanted to get an idea of the possible price. Can I also know the product you are using? If you have an advertising link of this product that can benefit you, I will not hesitate to order it. As well as may be the clamp or heater component. It is a principle of advertising that pays according to the number of product purchased. Thanks in advance.

@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 9 жыл бұрын
Ruben Camilleri Was the 0.5amp draw present before you changed charger IC? If not, maybe something was damaged during that process. If that current draw is when the phone is off and you haven't pressed power button then that is a lot for a phone in the off state. Something will be getting warm that should point you to the fault. Check to see if there is voltage on each inductor, this will tell you if the phone is "on" and trying to function or if the 0.5A is caused by a fault. Can't remember if it was the S3 or S4 but one of them was famous for a failing ROM or RAM chip that would stop it booting up.

Ruben Camilleri Given it happens when off I'd say you have a low resistance to ground somewhere. Leave the power on and if you can't feel what is getting warm spray some alcohol onto the board and see where it evaporates from the fastest and try pinpoint which part it is then remove that, test it, see what happens. Good luck.

+adam mentor I guess it's possible. I presume the battery is fully charged and it also shuts off when charger is connected? Also try without any SD cards installed. @JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 9 жыл бұрын
Florenc Sinanaj That's possible, does it look physically damaged? If not, with the board positioned so the connector is on the right (as at 13:30) you will see 5 large square parts on the left side and a row of smaller parts underneath partially covered by my thumb. The first of the smaller, on the left, should have 3V on one end while phone is turned on. If not there is a problem with power IC or its connections. If so, the next small part to the right should have 1.8V on one end. These 2 voltages power the screen. If not there's something more serious going on and may only be fixable with parts from a donor board. There's some more voltages to check if these 2 are present but hard to describe here, google around for the service manual, good luck!

hi jonny fix, so my problem is when ive changed my phone back camera using my mum old s4, when i turned on my phone all i can see is a black screen, and the small dot on the right hand side is blinking. And i try switching the motherboards and my mum motherboard is working properly on my phone and it isnt black screen.
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 7 жыл бұрын
So your S4 was working. You put the camera from your mums S4 into yours and now no image, but your mums motherboard works on your screen, so your screen is ok. I would first try with camera removed. If that works there could be a slight difference between models so you can't use that camera. If you still have a black screen you have likely damaged the connector the screen plugs on to or maybe damaged or broken off some tiny components beside it when you were disconnecting things.

@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 7 жыл бұрын
If the connector has lifted off the pads then yes. If it is broken then no. The tiny gold pins have to sit in the perfect place to make good connection. There is also a chance a small part has been broken off the board when you removed the connector. Have a look at this picture and make sure the parts shown around the connector are still on your board and not damaged. photobucket.com/gallery/user/d-Artigo/media/cGF0aDovc2Ftc3VuZ2d0LWk5NTA1ZGlzcGxheXByb2JsZW1fenBzODk2YWE3MGIuanBn/?ref=

Mine randomly reboots after a few minutes. When battery is out for a day it can be stable for 3-4 minutes, then hangs, and resets. I tried different batteries, all charged to 100%. When the phone is cold and 1 day without battery, it can even charge it up to 100% without any problem. When turned on and rebooting after a while, it isn't hot (just lightly percepible with finger touch, but was more or less the same temperature felt during normal operativity). I was able to put stock firmware without any failures (keeping phone in a fridge bag), let it rest, and did factory reset. The initial configuration setup is quite long, requiring more than 3-4 minutes, so I was able to complete it in a few days (as it remembers choices during screen paging). I don't know what could be the cause: not the power unit (it won't charge batteries, and in this case charging takes hours without any fault), not the eMMC rom (it wouldn't write stock rom). When it hangs, after a while some black lines appear on the screen before resetting. GPU problem? I'm clueless :(

No. I think that would be fun though. However, I lack the imagination to think up something to make. There's an aspect of reverse engineering that comes into it, especially when you can't get schematics.

hy jonny , help me diagnose a note edge that is shuting down with battery left say 35% , 28 % once at 70% ,sometimes it reboots , sometimes shuts down and wont power on unless reatach the battery or plug charging cable and when it power on it has the same battery juice or a little less. what i tested so far is... at the back where the power supply would be there are some capacitors that get extremely hot when the phone shuts down , water evaporates instantly on them ,another thing if i put my ear close to them i hear hissing noise, if the battery is at 4 volts ..if i put a load on the phone 100%load, the battery shows strange voltages measured with multimeter drops all way down to 3.2 volts and the phone shuts of and wont star again unless remove the battery. if i short for a second + and - of the battery while the phone is running it shuts down and wont power on unless i reatach the battery same symptom , so i think when the phone is under load or when takin pictures with flash something shorts on the phone thus the strange noise on the back. long story short , the phone works fine until 40% - 20% battery left is cold as ice but when randomly shuts down gets really hot on those capacitors
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 7 жыл бұрын
Capacitors shouldn't get hot. If the heat is coming from them not something near by then take them off and see how phone behaves. If it works better you might be able to leave them off or replace them if you can find the value. Sounds like they are dumping power from the battery so when it gets to lower % there's not enough power available to run the phone AND the faulty caps. If you short + and - (you should never do this) the batteries internal protection will basically turn the battery off until a charge is applied to the terminals again.

If you plug in the charger does it show the battery charging icon? If it does then you should check the power button, you might be able to turn it on by briefly joining the connections together with a wire or tweezers as it may have a bad switch. If it doesn't show the icon it is a more serious problem.

hi, i came across this video, the phone that i am trying to fix as a familiar issue, but i am not to sure if its the ic chip, i have noticed 2 things, i will start with the first in the service manual (www.lcd-television-repair.com/newsletter/Samsung-S4.pdf) for the board it says that if the phone does not turn on u have to search for the C665 and C664 ,i pluged the battary and when checking the voltage on C664 it is showing the voltage of the battery (around 3.8+-) when checking the C665 it shows 0 voltage, does it mean the ic is not functioning or just the ceramic chip is bad? this was the first question, second question, i have removed the power switch after that i was checking the pads, the ground and the right side of the pad which is connected to R1009 they do not have a continuity btw them heres a pic of what i meant image.prntscr.com/image/cd20e513b4604b5b9945c14bc89850e6.png, to be clear what i mean, i took the multimeter set it to continuity and check the 2 pads they needed to make a sound , but no sound was made , what could be here the problem?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 7 жыл бұрын
If I understand it right when you push the power button it will connect ground to the other pad to pull the voltage on that pad low to tell the power IC to turn on so with no switch there should be no sound. If 0V on C665, remove power and check resistance to ground on each side of that cap. One will be ground, the other should be very high. If there's a low resistance on that line that may be why there's no voltage. The flow chart says >1V but schematic below says 1.0 so hard to know if ok to have 3.8 there or not. Those flow charts assume everything else around it is ok, no liquid or drop damage etc. If low resistance on C665 you could use a bench supply to put 1V on there and see what gets hot. Just make sure you don't connect to the ground side ;) Alternatively just remove that cap and see if low resistance goes away.

thanks for replying :) when i pushed the power button nothing happened no signal when i put the battery or plug it into the charger, i've been watching this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ3CZ5mtr9p8raM where he shows that in a normal button the ground and the right side of the button should have a continuity , but in my case there were none. i checked the continuity on these pads when no battery was attached. (i have removed the power switch and checked right on the pads) here a more cleared pic i.imgur.com/FGCfntw.jpg? so i just checked the resistance on C665 with the multimeter set on mode 2k , one side start at 1.2k but then drop to 0.24 (240 ish) and the other side is 0 what do u think i should do?

It will need to be opened and cleaned. There are will be corrosion and likely under metal shields that need hot air to remove them. You might be able to brush away the worst of it with a soft brush and alcohol but it's likely from my experience capacitors will be damaged/shorted and there may be corrosion under some parts you can't clean. If you have never worked with electronics I don't recommend you start with this, unless you're willing to take the chance, you should send it to an expert.

Try a factory reset that wipes everything. If that fails it's probably a non repairable hardware fault.

Hey, could you please repair my broken dead Xiaomi Mobile phone? I have a lot of important data and I want it back, I want someone who can fix motherboard instead of replacing motherboard with a new one. I would like to know if you repair motherboards of mobile.

It's ok. Digital adjustment would be better as with age it's getting harder to set stable voltage without maintenance work. Also, I do need a current source >3A some times.

After trying almost all available solutions , i have not found yet a solution. History. I have tried too many custom roms... Two weeks ago I started trying new custom kernels. After last kernel I tried ( dont remember name) , so smartphone did not work properly and then immediately I used Odin Mobile Pro to install the official Samsung Rom . The phone started fine , HOWEVER it cannot connect to PC (usb problem "PC does not recognise source" ..however it is charged) , it has not IMEI (null) , WIFI closes automatically closes when i open it, internet access unavailable and finally SIM is not recognised. I can only use BLUETOOTH and this only in connection to PC. So it remains a usable phoneONLY as a game machine playing games i have already preinstalled in the SD. I didREAD in a post of yous that there is a custom recovery zippable via the stock recovery. I tried Philz...along TWRP/CWM ... but nothing.. Everytime i faced a E: Footer wrong..unavailable etc messages. Please. Any solution is welcome. Because I am near a month without a phone.

This is why I will not install a custom ROM. I have no experience doing this or trying to fix one that went bad. Maybe someone at forum.gsmhosting.com or xda-developers.com can help.
