As Rodney tells the story, he first came up with the idea for the magic flip while he was practicing ollies. He bailed on one, and when he did the board flipped, landed on all four wheels and rolled away. He says it felt like the board was mocking him. A few hours later he'd figured out how to do it on purpose and roll away. Thus the magic flip was born.

I started skateboarding in 2002 and ended up in 2004 coz my family won't let me and Rodney Mullen is my inspiration after I play Tony Hawks Pro Skater in PS1 and buy some magazines and read it with my friends, watching skate videos like Flip really sorry Etc. Being a skater starting in the late 80s and having my prime in beginning of the 90's it was such a big inspiration to see RM on video. Impossible and late-shove-it, then late-flips. Not only before but during anyone else, we were just trying to catch up.

When I started skateboarding back in 1998 I was just your casual riding type boarder. A year later I saw my first video of Tony Hawks, then later on saw his 900 spin I was inspired to do better. In 2001 I met a guy in a local area who was also a skater and he was looking at me and said “pretty good” and then he showed me some of his tricks. He then asked me who I idol and obviously I said Tony and then he said Rodney was his idol. I was 9 years old had no idea who he was and he told me he invented the tricks I learned. I honestly thought Tony invented everything. He invited to this skate shop and I met some pretty cool people and then they showed me VHS tapes of Rodney. I was mind blown that this was the creator of most of the tricks we see today and I’m blessed to have learned when I was younger some of his tricks. He was obviously a true inspiration and gifted man to learn all this and showcase it too the world to learn and see.

I remember being a kid in the late 80s and the neighborhood kids passing around a grainey vhs tape of Rodney doing these tricks. Spent hours watching this with my friends. Good times.

LEGEND.....I used to watch any dodgy Cassette tape I could get my hands on of him skating in the early 90's all the way here in South Africa...I went on to get sponsored and never placed worse than 3rd ever in competition. Sadly my love of motorbikes put me in Intensive care and I have a dodgy Right leg with multiple steel pins for the last 26 years. I sit on the sidelines ....always a fan....and will always be thankful that he helped pave the way....There will never be another innovator like Mullen.

I didn't realize Rodney invented all of these tricks. I loved skating as a kid and Rodney was my favorite by far. I eventually quit skating and picked up guitar, which I don't regret, but I still love watching Rodney skate.

Even though I never skated, I embraced the culture as a teenager and loved filming it. Blows my mind to this day. As an overweight 28 year old it stills feels inspirational to me, much like watching drumming - Its infectious. Those good at it make it look impossible. Rodneys contributions…he more or less invented skateboarding as we see it.

he invented the 360 flip but nobody cared so he invented the double 360 flip so people can see it flipping instead of looking like a 360 shove and yet nobody cared until jason lee started doing it years later. legend.

That's also true for other Jason Lee tricks. Lee once remarked that he didn't even know that Mullen invented them, haha. Also: Mullen perfected (didn't invent) the darkside, which is overlooked. When you see a darkside done without hands full-on down a rail or across a ledge, that's a Mullen trick. The original darkside was not good. Now, I think about it, very few skaters can even do a full-on Mullen darkside.

So much ❤ for mullen- dude was my inspiration and reason for preserverance. I learned quite a few things (the first was flipping the board 180 and over into primo, scooping under- somehow many of my friends never got that). I got so many tricks and inspiration from him and possibly invented a couple tricks (they probably have been done- but I've never seen them or don't know of them). I also didn't know the apparent real names of the "rail flips" (i thought they were different kinds of primo flips) but i was doing all kinds shortly after watching Rodney do them. There's like 1 or two other more recent skaters who's style and creativity really reminded me of mullen- one Asian guy, and one American who looks like a total hippie who's sponsored and has a good part in a big name skate video . i wanna say his name is reggie or begins with an r... would love to watch his stuff again. I really miss skating- hurt my back and then neck and it's been so many years. Enjoy it as much as you can for as long as you can. I'm tempted to try taking it up again, my body feels way too old though even at 35 lol.
