I've been doing photography for 30 years, and I have said this many times. For 95% of people wanting to pay the mortgage and raise a family in today's photography market, forget it. Many people with a passion to be creative are being led down the road to disappointment. 20 to 30 years ago, yes! because there were a lot fewer cameras and it took a lot of skill. The cameras today are so good, it's like taking pictures on Autopilot. As far as selling prints, in 1996 I could sell a 16x20 print all day for about $400 unframed. Now photographers are competing with stores that can sell a really nice image 30x40 framed for 100 to $200. The world has become over-saturated with visual imagery, causing photography to be a less important commodity to acquire. This is one of the reasons many photographers today are shooting film. How does that make any sense? I'm not saying people should not follow their passion, but when the average monthly rent in American cities is around 1,200 to $2000 a month, people really need to be carefully choosing photography as a profession. Many photographers who teach photography these days, actually don't make a living doing photography.
@ItsJonnyKeeley3 жыл бұрын
I think this is a very fair point. The only thing o would add for balance is that there are many many more places for companies to show photos these days it helps with that saturation.
@joseph-the-seventh3 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with you on some levels and I know what you're talking about-my grandmother was a successful fashion photographer in the 60's/70's. Back then demand was much higher than supply, budgets were relatively huge (magazines) and income for photographers was steady and high. These days there is more demand for photography, and way more ways to make money from it, but unfortunately supply is over abundant. What that means, at least for me, is that these days you need to work harder than other photographers to get jobs, not really in terms of crafting your skills but more so making the right contacts- finding people who still need and value bespoke imagery, and convincing them to hire you.

I'm not surprised. I've been unemployed a while now, so I thought I would try and make money with affiliate marketing. Everyone one on youtube is promoting it and saying how easy it is to make a lot of money just following a few rules. It's total BS. I've been at it for 6 months now, more hours than a real job and I've made $5. The only people making money from it are a few lucky people who got in early or having thoursands of friends, someone who has a lot of financial backing but it's mostly just people selling the "dream of making money with affiliate marketing". And I can tell you that market is totally over saturated. No matter where you look , everything is oversaturated now.
@ItsJonnyKeeley3 жыл бұрын
@@JackTheGroenendael I don't think anyone thinks it's easy. The difference is that it's exponential salary is linear online earnings based on an audience are generally exponential.

Be careful of competitions. Some have in the fine print of conditions that they claim the copyright of work you submit so they can use it without payment even if you don’t win. Even worse you will not be able to sell your own work later as they now own the copyright. Read the fine print of conditions with care! Great video by the way

These tips are golden. Was looking for a way to make money with it again (in the past I have done several weddings of several friends, I stopped, because I could not keep up and believed I was not good enough) I still question my work, but I can not get past the fact that it is my biggest passion. These are some good tips. I made and sold a photobook of my own city. I do a calendar already. So I have enough images. The book sold 300x. So pretty good. I have a second one out now. Its a better one. But its not selling too well. Covid19 might be a real issue there. A good tip is to just get it into stores. It will diminish your profits. But its less work, creates backlinks on Google which leads to more sales down the line. Same thing with a calendar. I sell 1000 a year now in my hometown. Less for others but still. Its lots of work and takes a lot of time but lots of benefits down the road again.

I was surprised how many people where eager to have their photo taken on the spur of the moment I offered emailed jpegs for free and raw files for 5 usd. I managed to make 250 usd I had a to of fun met so many people learned loads and I mean loads of technical. I intend to go next month and have some props and blowers and continue to expand my knowledge base.
