It’s not _just_ the short hair. Read Tolkien’s descriptions of elven appearance. Then remind yourself that in ROP, the men on the raft didn’t even realize Galadriel was an elf until they saw her ears.
@user-yp6yr9te7l
@user-yp6yr9te7l Жыл бұрын
yes, this! the pointy ear thing wasn't even in Tolkien. Legolas was the one whose ears were slightly leaf-like. That was it. They are distinguished right away from Mortals by their agelessness and eyes of deep memory, of their presence and aura, especially the High Elves like Galadriel who lived in Valinor under the light of the Trees. They are taller than Mortals as a rule. Galadriel was 2 rangar tall, which would make her 193 cm! That is taller than the average human male even in modern times. Not to mention in her eyes are reflected the light of the stars, and on her face the light of Valinor and the radiance of her deep gold hair which captures the light of the Trees and the silver stars. She should immediately strike people as an immortal being of great power.

The makeup bothered me too. Everyone, men included, had modern makeup, either hairspray, hair gel, or noticeable eye shadow, foundation..... If you watch the original trilogy, the makeup is so subtle it's barely noticeable. Another aspect that takes me out of this, because it's clearly modern makeup, not even an attempt at recreating medieval makeup. If you look at medieval paintings of noble lords and ladies, there was no eye shadow or mascara...

Guy this is not complicated. Objectively: 1) Costumes are armature, props look like they were borrowed from a Larp convention 2) Acting goes from wooden to over baked with little in between 3) Action scenes require gullibility, not suspension of disbelief 4) The dialog is clunky at best and more often juvenile 5) The script reads like an elementary school play 6) Characters act like children rather than grown adults, (it’s worth mentioning that at this point most of the named elves would be over a thousand years old.) 7) Character and plot inconsistency 8) The lets swim to shore! I could go into the desecration of Tolkien’s work and releasing the abomination on the anniversary of his death, but there is a character limit here.

Look up the meaning behind Galadriel's gift to Gimli in The Fellowship of the Ring. The back story and meaning of Gimli asking for the hair and Galadriel in turn giving him three? It makes you full on LOVE Galadriel from the books. In one gift; she's showing her incredible respect for Gimli, Giving the BIGGEST metaphorical "middle finger" to Fëanor of the first age but also just aiding in the relationship between elves and dwarves. Notice how Gimli and Legolas freindship bloom after that interaction. Fun fact, Gimli ends up being the only dwarf to go to the undying lands with his friend Legolas.
@SN00PICUS
@SN00PICUS Жыл бұрын
I always enjoyed their friendship in the books. I think Feanor's sons deserve the middle finger abit more than he does himself, but honestly all of them including Galadriel were some evil POS sometimes. Friggin Noldor and their lust for power smh
@tuub1281
@tuub1281 Жыл бұрын
It wasn't just the gift though. Gimli saw something in Galadriel that he never saw in other elves. Understanding. Galadriel knew the pain of the Dwarves, the loss of Khazad-Dûm and all that followed. Instead of showing anger due to historic fights between the two races, she showed understanding, compassion and hope.
@bobjob1656

I would add that it goes even deeper.Tolkein was well-read and understood the nature of teh old world very well.It was still prevalent and even now in some places people still do odd things like put witchhazel on the door. Superstition rated high on the list for our ancestors.Among that were things like curses and potions and sympathetic magic such as voodoo dolls with pins in.You did not lightly give your full name,or items you owned or parts of your body like hair.Remember the polyjuice potion that turned Hermione into a cat?that is exactly the kind of thing people thought was possible.Your hair might be used to make a poison potion or corrupt a blade that would kill only you. When you understand this,the exchange between Galadriel and Gimli is so much more moving and profound when you realise she is trusting him with what could be used against her. I believe he used the hair and wove it's intent into this knowing full well it has this deeper meaning. Just my tuppence for what it's worth.
@jhmi7877
@jhmi7877 Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, she didn't give Feanor her hair because she could see through his intentions, ones that he wasn't even aware of. Which means that when she looked into Gimli's heart, if you will, she saw that he could be trusted completely with whatever power was in her hair. And this is part of what I really dislike about RoP's representation of Galadriel. She's supposed to be incredibly perceptive that she was one of the few elves who didn't trust Annatar/Sauron, but in the show, she was the one actively goading him on.

Yesterday, at my job, one of my colleagues said he started watching the series. He admited never reading the books, but he stated: "I watched the Jackson trilogy and there were so much different kind of virtues embodied in different characters that I just don´t see in these series. Visually stunning but more like an action series. I think I will watch one more episode to decide if I keep watching." The rest in the table stared at me (they know I am a hardcore tolkienian and that I teach medieval literature). I really wanted to start a rant, even quoting Letter #210 (the one where Tolkien review a mediocre script he eventually rejected) that I keep in my phone. But I said nothing. It was no time for an hour of literture rant. But... I think this light approach may help us. I mean, considering how fast the phenomenons of mass media pass this days (unlike in 2001) this mess may pass quickly and in some time all will forget about Galadriel the barbarian and her empowered adventures. I don´t know, I just appeal to fugacity.

Yes, sometimes it’s difficult to avoid ranting about those things we have strong and passionate views about. Things that promote unhealthy behavior causes me confusion. Much of the current woke fads will fade as did bell bottom pants. Some of the current fads are making it more difficult to even understand each other. It’s become a fad to redefine commonplace words. For example ‘woman’, ‘man’. It’s really absurd to do this and just reduces the opportunity to have useful conversation. This redefining current words needs to stop. It’s simple to just create a new word but it doesn’t have the emotional impact and I suppose that’s part of the reason for redefining words.

Forget all the bad dialogue and bad timeline and bad writing. Portraying Elves with short hair is heresy of the highest order. Yeah I just watched it too and after feeling weird about getting so annoyed by the entertainment aspects of life I sank into it and it’s probably the best movie in the series. The casting is very special. I wouldn’t really change anything except maybe Frodo if I could but that’s not a huge dealbreaker for me as Elijah does great he just does certain things I could live without. I had only just realized that Frodo waking up after mount doom and seeing Gandalf was legit the first time he’d seen him since the Balrog. It was an emotional watch. Very special movies. If they had just taken Peter Jackson on as an advisor but they clearly are just using intellectual property to tell their own story. Oh well.

Tolkien described his Elves with long hair as well (both directly and clear implication): "All the Eldar had beautiful hair (and were especially attracted by hair of exceptional loveliness), but the Noldor were not specially remarkable in this respect, and there is no reference to Finwe as having had hair of exceptional length, abundance, or beauty beyond the measure of his people." PoMe, Shibboleth of Feanor In a discussion of the meaning of Finwe's name (fin, hair in this iteration), specifically references Finwe's hair as not exceptionally more long or abundant than the hair of the other Eldar (who all had beautiful hair). "But most it was their wont to sail in their swift ships upon the waters of the Bay of Elvenhome, or to walk in the waves upon the shore with their long hair gleaming like foam in the light beyond the hill." Morgoth's Ring, Later Quenta Simarillion 1 The Teleri (who are Eldar) had long hair. "Finwe (and Miriel) had long dark hair, so had Feanor and all the Noldor, save by intermarriage..." NoMe, Hair The Noldor (who are Eldar) had long hair. "In general the Sindar appear to have very closely resembled the Exiles, being dark-haired, strong and tall, but lithe. Indeed they could hardly be told apart except by their eyes; for the eyes of all the Elves that had dwelt in Aman impressed those of Middle-earth by their piercing brightness. For which reason the Sindar often called them Lachend, pl. Lechind ‘flame-eyed’." WotJ, Quendi and Eldar The Sindar, who are Teleri (who have long hair) in origin, look like the Noldor, who have long hair. "Their gleaming hair was twined with flowers; green and white gems glinted on their collars and their belts; and their faces and their songs were filled with mirth. Loud and clear and fair were those songs, and out stepped Thorin into their midst." The Hobbit, Flies and Spiders The Silvan Elves, who are Teleri (long hair) in origin, have hair long enough to twine flowers into. The Song of Aelfwine "There blowing free unbraided hair is meshed with beams of Moon and Sun, And twined within those tresses fair a gold and silver sheen is spun, As fleet and white the feet go bare, and lissom limbs in dances run, Shimmering in the shining air: such loveliness to look upon No mortal man hath ever won, though foam upon the furthest sea He dared, or sought behind the Sun for winds unearthly flowing free. O! Shore beyond the Shadowy Sea! O! Land where still the Edhil are!" Lost Road, FNII

It seems that the people who put the ROP together fail to understand how strong real Tolkien fans feel about his work. And most people that spend actual labor to grasp the efforts Tolkien made to create his fantasy world develop awe of his hard work over time... Just look at how the real fans criticized the 3 Hobbit movies by Peter Jackson. By most standards those 3 movies were entertaining…but not entertaining to real fans. Just ask Peter Jackson. The people who made these ROP things are just lazy fools.

They understand how fans feel, they just don't care how they feel. They simply seek to make this franchise a phenomenon and make a lot of money on it. It's not going to happen, even if it were faithful to the source material, it would not capture the buzz and merchandise market that Game of Thrones got. We're not going to have a hard time getting Galadriel or Harfoot POP figures.

Real fans? Please, get of your horse. Who are you to decide what and who is a REAL fan. I read all of Tolkiens work over 30 years ago, before is was 15 and still read it from time to time, I love the lore, but I am not so stupid as to think that when a new developer comes it needs to be exactly like Tolkien, new people come and tell their version. They are allowed to, they paid damn good money to do so, now you can dislike it all you want, but to throw BS like this around is just nonsense.

"Boats float because they look up", just *might* have worked. Pre-scientific ideas of physics were often pretty wonky, but if the audience is to take them seriously, you can't have them sounding like a fortune cookie. You also have to work them into the story. Elven boats could have had eyes carved into the railings. And while nothing could salvage Galadriel's decision to swim across an ocean to the Middle Earth from being laughably stupid, at least she could have floated on her back, gazing at the stars with a look of wonder. Doing the impossible with the power of her faith would also have introduced another kind of strength than merely physical to the character. But nah, can't have anything vaguely Tolkien-ish complicating the generic warrior princess.

How did orc armories forge their weapons if the evil orcs make their forges cold? What a dumb concept that was not thought out at all.

They could have shown the change of carefree Galadriel from scolar to desperate sister taking up arms looking for her missing brother only to find his remains. They had all the money in the world to make it happen if they wanted that damn revenge quest. Instead they talk about stones for waaay to long.

Legolas doing silly physics defying stunts in the movies works because it's clearly meant as comic relief and isn't really that self-serious. I got so much shit off my mates when I mentioned that, but it really is literally the most un-elfish thing (bar the Big Bad Galad-riel) in the whole show. I'm cool with a dark skinned elf (already forgotten his name), he must've spent a lot of time out in the sun - so yeah, almost believable. However, the big black Yaaas Queen Dwarf, even though I kinda liked her acting and character, was just beyond bizarre. Dwarves... Who live INSIDE mountains? Who the hell OK'd that one?

Comparing the two Galadriel's is not a fair comparison. At all. In Peter Jackson's (PJ) trilogy Galadriel was a side character with a very minor role, and the trilogy had a much smaller budget. In ROP Galadriel is a main role, there was a lot larger budget, and ROP had a major company backing it. Also, LOTR is much more well known now than it was when PJ was making his trilogy. So PJ was able to get characters with smaller roles to fit in the movie and represent what he imagined as Tolkien's world, whereas Amazon can't even get it's main characters right on a billion dollar budget. smh
@Mbstr1
@Mbstr1 Жыл бұрын
Also note: PJ tried to represent how he imagined Tolkien's world, while Amazon tries to represent "diversity", "female empowerment" and "represent a more modern view of todays world" rather than Tolkien's world.

And as a Prime Member, I find it cowardly that they won't allow me to leave a review. I kind of feel like I purchased a defective product, and they closed down customer support on me. The worst part for me, and it wasn't easy to narrow down, was the dialogue. They tried to sound deep and philosophical... but it was just shallow, nonsensible gibberish. This is what you get, when you hire sociopolitical activists to tell a story, instead of accomplished screenwriters. I'm pretty sure they wrote the script in crayon. And yeah, I don't get the resting bitch face Galadriel. That was obviously put in there at a woman's bequest. They are the only ones that think it's effective for communicating a message. Real men don't care when a woman has resting bitch face. "Well, the princess is pissed off again... so what else is new". And just ignore her. I just realized why I dislike the show so much. The writers have me ignoring (my natural response) the main character... Princess Bitch Face. They modeled her after my ex-wife. 😂

You may be surprised, but women's reaction to such a facial expression is about the same. My guess is that it was a feminist/activist type of person who wanted to use this expression to show that Galadriel is a strong woman, but it failed miserably. And the facial expression is not even the main problem, she just looks and acts hysterical, entitled and unhinged.

IMO streaming services should've done that with all their series from the start. Rating a show/season for it's First two episodes, or even when you didn't watch them at all, is a dickmove, and you know that. You guys only don't want to confess it, cause you saw that as a way to spit Amazon in the soup, and now you are butthurt they won't give you that opportunity. People usually don't came up during conversations with impossible things. When was the last time someone of us told to someone "you know I won't be here always cause when I'll became a president of Arctic I'll have to go there." They knew conversation only from Twitter. Even the unlikeable characters were only unlikeable, not loathed or detestable. I didn't feel about joy or love.
