As an artist I learned to start working and not worry about my mind or anything. Just start working, then you will find your way and inspiration. It’s when time disappear. Then you get your state of creation. I did worked every day for 30 years, sometimes I was cleaning brushes, sometimes painting for hours, you need the discipline. Picasso said I keep working every day and when the inspiration comes it can catch me working! Best

There is no trace of the artist in this drawing. It is a mechanical representation of the eye. Jono is competing with a camera. Of course this is an insanely high degree of craft here, but no self expression, style, interpretation or art. It represents obsessive/compulsive behavior. This reminds me of the days when photography was not as sophisticated and artists were employed as medical draftsmen to aid surgeons and medical students. Not the kind of art I would want hanging in my house.

The roughness comes not from the sponge but from the water. When the fibers absorb water they bend and shift, often perpendicular to the surface. We get the same thing in woodworking. Often carpenters will wet down the surface to get loose fibers to stand up so that when it dries the fibers can easily be sanded off.

The rough texture paper, when the pencil media are not heavily pressed down, the paper white of the paper glows through in a dynamic way, similar to the pencil and charcoal works of Seurat

So far I love all the videos I've seen. coming from whatever angle you choose. As a wanna be artist / painter I find all aspects fascinating and helpful, and really enjoy hearing about an artist's personal approach and experience , except if they are being dogmatic or pretentious, which you absolutely are not. So I'll keep watching whatever you decide to share, and much appreciate your generosity in sharing. Blessings From Down Under Oz.

Very interesting video, thank you! I'm very curious about your drawing process: do you use photos as reference?

I do, I also take all my own reference photos, working closely with my models to try and create the art work I have planned.

I'd love to see a video of how you take and design your reference photos. I'd really like to start doing some larger scale drawings but I feel like none of my reference photos would be high enough in quality to get this level of detail.

I would like to get to know you as a person better. Tell us why you draw, or what in your art makes you happy, or sad or anything you want to. You don't have to get personal, but some basic things about you will be nice. Love your art and it's amazing that a fellow South African is so amazing at his talent.

Im not sure I could answer that with out getting personal. I think Ill get into that stuff one day when I feel a bit more comfortable on the platform. I dont know, There is also something good about leaving things out, like my motivation behind the work, might take away from how others see it.

@@JonoDry Definitely! I do mostly woodcarving with a mixed media, sometimes in oils or acrilic. I never interpret. Like a verse from John Denver, "music paints pictures and often tell's stories, and in so many ways the music is you"
