Housing affordability in the US varies depending on where you are. Big cities are more expensive than the suburbs, and rural areas can be cheaper. There are places you can buy a nice home for under $100,000 still, but other places that a tiny little house with no yard can be multiple millions. So it all depends on location.

Yeah, Jono, it snows in virtually every one of the 50 states. Obviously not the same in Little Rock as in Buffalo, but snow is still snow. I guarantee that your daughter would be able to visit a school near where you stayed or moved to, to show her that 99.99% of America is *_not_* what she sees in the sick, twisted media.

Yes, I took the route in TX to complete my 4 year degree by working full time and going to school. For the first 2 years, I went to a local community college. I received my Associates Degree and completed the final 2 years at the University of Houston, Clear Lake which concentrates on the upper level courses. I received my bachelor’s degree and was able to work, live and go to school while staying in the same home. There are so many ways to go to school in the states at all levels.

I lived in England for awhile and I was surprised to find that a lot of British people don’t like Americans. I don’t know why that is because most say they are glad that we are friends...but in person they don’t act like it. I also had someone from England visiting the US and they were surprised at how nice and helpful we were. People in the US are happy to meet people from other countries. I just find it bizarre that we are not well liked by a lot of British even thought they say were are “cousins”. (Edit: forgot to add that most British people do not realize that the US is 40 times larger than the UK. Most people are shocked to discover that)

I used to be pretty indifferent but generally positive toward Brits and assumed they felt the same aobut us. Then I started watching British reaction channels and boy, oh boy, the whacky things they wholeheartedly believe about us. They will literally make stuff up and declare with absolute certainty that it's true. They'll ciriticize us for things that are FROM THEM. I tihnk they're ust bitter people overall and don't like that the United States is the "big dog" of the world now after the glorious British empire fell. Really, Europe in general has such negatives perceptions of us, but the Brits are the worst offenders by far. Also, I love how they like to pretend as if racism is nonexistent in their country and then they say the most out-of-pocket stuff. Not all Brits are bad, of course, but man, they sure do love to arrogantly talk aobut stuff they know nothing about...

Some Brits look down on Americans as being rough and uncultured. We look down on them for being effete and still longing for an Empire where they can exploit native populations for pennies on the pound. My favorite Brits are the cockneys, people like Liza Doolittle's old dad.

Heeeeyyy jono we don't just have national parks, we also have state parks. Here in Texas there are 87 state parks. I'm just a few miles from one of them it is called Inks Lake state park. They have camp sites with fire rings and pick nic tables or primitive campsites. Fishing piers, and lots of hiking trails. There are also caverns near here called longhorn caverns they do guided tours its pretty amazing. Just thought I would mention those two places. They are about 50 miles Nw of Austin. Peace and love from central Texas.

Ah man, the Red SOLO Cups being a staple of American parties due to our entertainment is always extremely funny to me. It's just extremely bizarre because foreigners get this strange idea that they're important major parts of American culture, a big must at crazy college parties and stuff to the point that they're sometimes sold in foreign countries labeled as "American Party Cups". I followe AskAnAmerican on Reddit and one question came from someone that believed they were a super important part of American culture yet, people had to explain to him that they're just cups. Just plastic cups that happened to be red that are used for any social gatherings from these all out bombastic crazy college parties to 4 year old Lucy's birthday party at the local park. They're not special yet, Hollywood has accidentally convinced the world that they extremely important

I've driven across the US twice. Went from wearing shorts and a tank top, to jeans and a t-shirt, to jeans, a sweater and boots. On day four, I had layers on, the heat blasting and frozen toes in wool socks. Arizona is desert, so it's warm, and then gets cold at night or in higher altitudes. That's what I thought until I visited there. It's not hard to strike up conversations with the average New Yorker and they're eager for you to see the city. Just the history of the place floored me when I saw it in person. Had friends who'd moved there from Colorado and settled in the Lower East Side where so many immigrants had landed after landing there from Europe. Greek neighborhoods, European Jewish neighborhoods, Haitian, Chinese, Italian, German, Slovakian, Polish neighborhoods with exotic (to me) shops & restaurants. Even the business history in that town is astounding. JP Morgan's original bank is still there on Wall Street as well as the Federal Hall where Washington first took the Oath of Office just a few steps from the first "White House." Not a place where I'd want to live because the weather is hot & muggy in summer and wet and cold in winter.

Like others have said... you can find affordable housing depending on the state and if it's in a large city, suburbs, or rural. If it has land or not, if the house needs a lot of work done AND preexisting house or new. So many variables. When i was house hunting in 2006 i just wanted an affordable (on my meager budget) 2 bedroom house in a low crime neighborhood. I was able to find exactly what I needed. Now my house is worth 2x what I paid for it. Yes, housing prices have skyrocketed here, thank goodness im not hugely picky about wanting a brand new 4 bedroom house in a planned community with all the modern bells and whistles.

As far as New Yorkers, I lived there for about a decade and I think the misconception of them being rude is because they are blunt, loud, and in a hurry. If you listen, they yell please and thank you, which I think is hilarious. "Can you PLEASE move?!" "THANK YOU!" But the one thing I took away most about NYC is that the people have a strong sense of justice/injustice and are very quick to defend someone, help those in need, and keep cool in tough spots. 2003 blackout comes to mind, or transit strikes, and of course natural and manmade mass incidents. I could never have imagined 8 million people dealing with emergencies as well as New Yorkers do. They will check on neighbors, queue in an orderly fashion, and overall, really impressed me with the "it takes a village" attitude. I don't hear them always get a lot of credit for it, but they can handle their -ish in a crisis in a very admirable way. Of course, there are always exceptions, but that's a given anywhere. Housing costs in the US vary greatly by regions. The UK is one of the worst housing markets in the world right now, to my understanding, so that may color your view compared to others.

Southern Californian here. When I was 22, I took my first trip outside the United States (to Europe). I was generally raised on English period pieces and Shakespeare, etc. I thought when I came out of Heathrow, I would see dour men in black coats and hats. I was surprised when I walked out onto the street and it looked like any other city I had been to in my life. Sun shining, bright clothing, etc. I was in Europe for two weeks and saw several countries and each one had a positive effect on me to varying degrees.

Ive heard plenty, but I grew up in rural GA. People would visit from Atlanta (usually the far suburbs where they also never heard gun shots) and get startled and wonder why I didnt think it was a big deal and all I had to do was listen and say, "thats probably about 2-3 miles that way and someone is hunting deer, because, you know, its deer season." It was weird that even though they lived only 2 hours away, they had zero concept of people using guns in boringly normal ways just like they had for centuries.

With the number of students in the educational system, statistically speaking, it is highly unlikely for a child to be injured or killed in a school shooting. I get that the fear is real (and extremely traumatizing when one occurs), but one is more likely to be killed in a car accident than at school.

Being the outdoorsman you are, may I suggest that when you and your family do have an opportunity to come to the US, that you rent an RV or campervan and then that way you and your family could go camping in some of these state and national parks. I think that you all would enjoy the beauty that these parks have to offer. The parks in the South and Northeast can be absolutely breathtaking in the Fall when the leaves turn colors. Standing on top of the mountains and overlooking all the colorful trees looks as if the good Lord made a colorful portrait just for you.

I'm a "snowbird" (a retiree who spends summers in the north and winters in the south). I highly recommend seeing the US in an RV. The rental cost may seem a lot at first, but considering the cost of hotels compared to campgrounds, it would probably cost less. Right now, I'm at a Corps of Engineers campground on a lake in north Texas ... $10 for seniors, $20 for others. Tomorrow night I'll be at a Texas State Park for less than $30.

We moved to Germany in 1960 when I was six years old. My Dad was career military and had fought in Europe during WW2. I kept expecting the Gestapo to come in their cars which went da dee da dee da dee and take us to a concentration camp (the last movie we had seen in the States was The Diary of Anne Frank. Also the air in the city smelled a lot different than at home. Decades later I realized it was because lots of their energy for heating was coal and coke, their trains ran on coal and their cars ran on diesel. The Gestapo worry became true when my brother and I attempted to cross the autobahn near the village we lived in and while standing in the grass median between the opposing lanes a German VW Beetle going da dee da dee da dee and staffed by two Gestapo troopers spun into the grass, and they leapt out and without speaking a word of English, hustled us into the back seat. The concentration camp turned out to be the MP station twenty minutes away on the U.S. Army base. I thought we were goners though.

Gun ownership in the US is a bit under or a bit over 50% depending on the survey. If its in urban America gun ownership is very low but its very high in rural areas where people hunt and law enforcement response time is 30 minutes plus, people in urban areas that never lived in a rural area do not understand these things.

People actually got up and moved away from me because I was using my fingers. Meanwhile, a man was using the fork to eat his french fries and was also feeding them to his dog off the same fork. @bjcee1108 While I do not necessarily agree with you on your statement, I will say that there are states where their education systems are tremendously lacking, and have been for decades.. sadly. There are any number of reasons that people here in the states will homeschool their children. One of them is likely due to some school districts in their state or city/town with a failing education system. The top three "homeschool" states are North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia (in that order) all in the southern region of U.S. But in the U.S. there are a great many good school districts as well as parochial schools. It really isn't or shouldn't be about "bad vs. good." It's about the freedom of choice. Both can equally be a great experience. People should first, always research (public) the competency of the school(s) in which your child would be attending. If found to be clearly lacking, then homeschooling is probably the best option.

Have you heard of Paris Syndrome? In many Asian countries, especially Japan, Paris has been idealized in pop culture. The reality of Paris generally hits such visitors as a massive culture shock, and it hits some hard enough to cause full psychotic breaks with reality, delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, feeling of persecution, dissociative depersonalization and derealization. Home and land prices vary very widely. Typically it is far more expense to live in/near large cities. Yes, your paychecks may be bigger there but the cost of living is far higher than the difference in paychecks vs cost of living in more rural areas. For example, my father made like 50K a year, at the peak of his working days, as a millwright, in the 90's, when he retired. He built a 4 bedroom, 3 bath house with a full basement, full kitchen, dining, den and living room with two garages/carports(one upstairs, one attached to basement) on 160 acres and it was all paid for like 15 years before he retired. OTOH, my older brother made like 250K a year, lives near Washington DC and he just paid off his 30 year mortgage on his 2 bed, 2 bath home on 1 acre of land. He is retiring soon and he can sell that house and property to buy a bigger house on a large plot of land(40+ acres), back down here(northern Alabama) where he was raised, near family and have money left over from the sale.

Having talked to people from all over the world, our political system is often not understood. US is not really one country, not a country in the way Europeans especially think of a country. Our political divisions are called STATES for a reason, they are states unto themselves. Their government is completely separate from that of the federal government. It's almost like the EU in that respect. Each state governs itself and in no way does the governor of a state answer to the President of the US. Laws vary from one state to the other, and can be extremely different. States even have their own milita outside of and separate from the US Military. Most foreign visitors are completely surprised by those facts.

College parties and other stuff. Yes, you will find wild college parties across the country. They usually involve fraternities or sororities, but for the most part parties and colleges are not that wild. But like with everything else, the focus is put where it will get the most attention , which may not be the norm. Red Party Cups… when we go to the store, we buy what we are looking for, and the red solo cups are cheap, hold a good amount, don’t break easily, etc., and maybe more importantly are a brand sold across the country now, but more importantly where they make tv and movies. Where to visit… find some things you want to do, like hiking, look for places to do that, but make sure to check how time of year (season) might affect your trip. As others have said, you can actually snow ski, water ski, hike, and swim at the beach all on the same day, depending on where you live (but that could cost you a lot ;-). And driving from state to state can also change climates. Do you realize you can snow ski in Hawaii? People say that most people of the US don’t own a passport, and it is true, but the reason is there are so many things to do locally, or in the next part of the state or in another state that the need to go outside the country is not really needed. But as a first world country, well like everywhere, we do like to complain at times, but our complaints are first world complaints. We complain if the fruit at the market isn’t pristine, whereas in so many places around the world fruit like we have access to daily is unheard of, and would be thought of as fairy tails. So much more I could say, but here is my parting thoughts. Tell your daughter to do a little research and write a page about what she finds. How many students are in each state… in the entire country? How many students get shot during a year… 10 years? Do the same for ‘How many schools?’ The have her figure out the chances of anything happening to a specific school, let alone a specific student at any given school. Point is that you are right. The media shows what will make them the most money… excitement and action bring in views, and views means money. So yeah, everybody is in danger every day unless you watch the news and do what they say… which is nothing… Yeah, plan a trip or an education here. Visit or stay. No mater what you chose, you will likely enjoy life as you are doing now!

Prices can vary quite a bit in a state and between states. My uncle, who lived in the Chicago area, and I compared taxes and insurance between Chicago and Houston. My taxes and insurance were much higher than his. The other difference is paying state tax. In Texas, there is no state insurance.

I live in NC now I was born and raised in upstate NY (part of the state north of NYC) and it’s more rural farm country and mountain ranges than anything. So often even here in the states, people think of NY and only think of the city but most of the state is rural country and a great place to visit. I would visit the city, grab a slice of pizza, check out some of the big ticket tourist places and then head north about an hour to the Catskill state park. Beautiful area to visit. Really, you can’t go wrong with the entire Appalachian mountain range which spans basically the entire east coast.

What I've always heard from my news about South Africa was that crime can be bad in many areas and that the gov is corrupt and as a result, there are frequent power outages. I've always wondered if that was all true because, as you said in this video, media often only reports on the most negative aspect of a place and often exaggerates the severity of things, so I've always wondered if that was all true or not, because I imagine many parts are nice as well, we just don't hear about them. ?

19:00. Certain states in the United States have housing markets where the houses are very affordable, and then there are some states where the houses are VERY over-priced. I live in Massachusetts (far northeast US), but I live minutes from another state called New Hampshire. You can buy a MANSION in New Hampshire for $800,000 and there are NO TAXES (Sales Tax or State Tax)! $800,000 in New Jersey (just 200 miles away south) will buy you a house with MAYBE 3 bedrooms & 2 Bathrooms and MAYBE a small yard.

Maybe instituting mandatory national service like France does would help to channel the energy of a person's late teens into something useful...helping the less fortunate or learning military defense. I "partied" way too much at age 18 & 19, which meant ingesting excessive alcohol. Surprised I didn't decapitate myself riding my motorcycle at 80mph into a semi-truck or kill somebody else during those fat, dumb, happy years.

You would have to pay me pretty well to go to New York city these days. But I understand if someone from outside the US would want to visit there or LA or SF. I've been to most big US cities other than Seattle and Honolulu. LA and SF were pretty interesting when I first visited 50 years ago...Not so much anymore in my opinion. As a qualifier, I'm not a city person. To me, the beauty of the US is the smallish towns. I have to go to Dallas and Houston because of work, but I'd rather not. I lived in Dallas suburbs for different parts of my life, but I was born to live outside the bustle. Fort Worth and San Antonio (both of those have great food as well) are still not too bad, but big cities are in decline worldwide, not just in the US or Europe. The acceptance, and often encouragement, of apathy has become a world-wide phenomenon. I don't currently live in TX, but if I move again, I would probably go back to a rural area there. Peace, Love!!

Housing here is pretty individualized. When you look towards buying a house in the US it's a matter of function, not a roof over your head. Is my family the outdoor type, are they the type to hang out in the kitchen, are they gamers that play together and will take over a living space, do they have a lot of friends over, is the bedroom enough that I can retreat for some quiet time, do we have dogs or cats, what is the upkeep, is a big yard important ? A lot of thought goes into it. So, many, many types of houses. I'm trying to downsize from all the kids being grown and I bet I've been through 10,000 home plans and have finally found two that would work for me. When I lived in Europe it was a matter of the cost of rent and that it had a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. I have taken a lot away from living over there and am incorporating some of the things they do well when I consider the next house, but it's not the same as planning for a family.

From what I understand (I've never been myself, but know a few people from that area), There are (essentially) two sides of New York. The city and what's known as up state New York. In up state you will find all the nature you could possibly want. Az, in the winter, gets just as cold as anywhere else. If you get up into the mountains, it can get cold any time of the year. Housing here really depends on where you are. Some places in stupid expensive while others are not bad at all. Of course, even that is relative. Places that are cheap for some are not for others.

The housing cost in the US varies greatly. California, and some other large cities are expensive (over $500K-$1M easily). But once you get out of the large cities and their suburbs, the prices go down to $250K-$400K. Of course, this is a generalization, and the price will vary on the house size, the amount of land that goes with it, its particular locality, even after you have left the big cities. So, in general, if you are paid a decent salary you will eventually be able to buy a house. Of course, with 2 people making good salaries, the amount of time it would take to amass enough funds for a down payment goes down. 20% down is the norm, so if you buy at $250K house, it will require $50K down, and if you buy a $500K house, it then would require $100K down. Of course, the more expensive house would result in a higher amount of a loan, and thus would require a bigger monthly payment. Most home loans are given at a 30 year rate, and it is best to get a loan with a fixed mortgage rate, meaning there is no time limit, and it never changes. You have to add home insurance and property tax to the mortgage monthly fee, which can add up also.

Ok, I subscribe to 6 different Brit/European reactors who mainly focus on the U.S. and I have to say, I'm dumbfounded by the lack of food options the Brits have. But I also understand that the U.S. isn't the UK. That, and how they all seem to look so confused at what I would have thought was known well in the UK. Like, is sourdough bread NOT a thing the UK?? And the ever popular chicken "burger". Europeans should understand that our culture and history is a wild and crazy one. It just is, and we won't apologize for it. The gun played a life or death roll when it came to "taming" this wild land. It was as much a tool as a hammer or a saw was a tool. One thing that bugs me though is when a Brit reactor look totally confused at some of the things we do/did and then they question our motives. Understand, we aren't you. Our history is vastly different than anything in Europe ever was or is. And don't forget, this country basically began as an experiment in self governing. I'd say we did ok. Oh yea, I really like your channel Jono, and you have a lovely family. Please come join us in the U.S.
