They look for holes under boat ramps, holes in the bank. They also build plywood boxes that they put out early in the season before the catfish spawn. Usually you stick your foot in the hole first to get them to bite it. Blue cats are pretty rough, they’re the ones that will hurt you if you’re not careful.

They came up fast complaining that a huge fish tried to attack them. So some people were hired to catch it. They brought deep sea diving tackle and gear.that fish was busting lines rods and straightening hooks. So eventually they use a hay bailing hook tied to a thick rope with whole chickens and toasts on it. They caught the fish. Took a truck to lift the thing outnof the water. It was an Asian catfish that had been there God knows how long. It was almost as long as a vw bug car and wide.

Catfish get bigger then that. Depends on their environment. I think record I have heard was 143 lbs and about 60" in North Carolina, by Nick Anderson. The biggest ones tend to be close to dams just down stream, where the feast on the fish get chopped up in the turbines etc. All they have to do is just sit there and food comes to them. Almost every dam has stories of divers working on maintenance being freaked out by the catfish. If you ever come to the US there is a Fresh Water Aquarium in Chattanooga that has mammoth catfish on display, I think it's largest fresh water aquarium in the world.

People complaining they’re hurting the fish need to relax, they aren’t hurting the fish, at least this group release the fish every time, it’s just sport and it doesn’t hurt the fish, a 60 lb catfish is pure muscle , they aren’t hurting and going thru the gill doesn’t hurt them, their gills are massive and open right to their mouths catfish open and close them constantly she’s just putting her hand through the huge opening to the jaw. The tagging doesn’t hurt them either, my 3 daughters pierced their ears by choice , a pinch instantly and no more pain, putting a tag on is even less painful their piercing the top fin which has virtually no nerve endings anyway. Listen to her talk about the fish, she’s always saying “she is SO beautiful” she LOVES catfish and respects them greatly and their power. It’s a longtime tradition been going on for a very very long time. Some people eat the cat fish , this group doesn’t so be happy about that. It’s less painful then fishing which snares a double to quadruple metal barbed hook through a fishes tongue, cheak etc and surely painful getting em pulled back out to release , no hooks here. Besides that cat fish are literal garbage fish , they breed like rabbits and overpopulate streams and lies quickly eating other good fish like trout etc becasue they’re so damn big. They do a bit of cleaning of the waterways, eating dead fish decomposing fish and animals etc but when they start overpopulating they eradicate the waterways of fish that can be eaten and or are needed for the ecosystem of the water and most people won’t eat catfish becasue they don’t taste good to most. Utah Lake has a massive problem with these, they don’t get big like this but there are so many they’ve killed off most the other fish in the lake so people that fish as a food need can’t catch other fish and people thst fish for sport /relaxation don’t have nearly any fish to fish for. In other words, this girl loves and respects these monsters, she gets so much happiness and fun out of it and it hurts none of these fish so stop whinning! There are millions of human beings suffering in this world, worry about them not damn catfish and some amazing human beings enjoying nature!

Catfish in the US can be very large. Not like SE Asia large but still pretty big. You really need large ones to 'noodle' because you can't stick your hand in the mouth of a small one. We call it 'poking for catfish' it is 'catfish noodling' in the deep south. I have done it a few times (when younger) & it is fun. I heard of one guy caught on about 60 lbs (28 kg). And there was no way it would break an arm. I guess if you were a little kid it might. Long story how you find them. Try to be short here. Feeling along a bank, you find holes. If one has a sandy entrance it has probably been fanned out & there is a fish it it. They seem to be in the middle of a river. So they are feeling under logs & rocks for the same sandy hole. Most times you will get no bigger than 20 lbs or so.

Catfish can live up to 10 to 12 hours out of water. We have the flathead, more head a little small body, blues, channel car, mud catfish, and Mississippi white that are solid white with pink eyes, very good to eat. We also in the catfish family are spoonbill or paddle fish, these look like a shark and get 200 lbs most 60 to 100lbs, they have large bill on their nose. These can only be catch. Y snagging them which is legal. These have no bone and are Excellent to eat or smoke. U can get Caviar like salmon out of them. Check out snagging large spoon bill in northeastern Oklahoma. God Bless

But I know I am not the only one out there who thinks catfish are creepy af! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been swimming in the lakes and certain rivers around here, and honestly been a bit freaked out in the back of my mind, knowing what’s really not so far away from me, lurking down in its hole, or under a rocky outcropping. Seriously! Just watch River Monsters: at least half of the fish Jeremy Wade is after are a species of catfish! Rationally I know they’re harmless, unless I’m trying to catch them like this...and I’m not. I really enjoy fishing-with a rod and reel-but you’re right: people do drown like this. Plus: I’m not crazy about the idea of sticking my arm in a hole with the intent of having a catfish bite down on me, and I sure don’t wanna risk an encounter with a snapping turtle in that hole!
