Eurovision is an emotional affair for Joost. As a child, he watched it together with his parents. "Parents, one day I'm going to be on Eurovision stage" and he made it. Unfortunately, his parents died when he was a child. This song is dedicated to his late father. That's why it's called EUROPAPA. The part in the song “I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone. I'm in Italy, but I still feel the pain, etc.", I feel it's directed at his parents... Joost loved his parents and still does. His lyrics are mostly very deep, but the melody is happy, danceable and the clips of his song are presented in a fun way. Joost himself said that his musical style is diverse. When Joost was asked what song they should listen to in order to understand you. He answered Florida 2009 (it's about his parents) and Wachtmuziek (it's about mental health). I recommend listening to them. You have to translate it, because he sings in Dutch.

@@FabianJ When you pay attention to the visuals and lyrics in the video, like at 4:12, you can see/hear the duality of his pain under all the happiness which tears him apart. At the hardcore/gabber drop he lets it all go, the last 20 seconds is the final hommage to his parents to tell them he is getting ready for a new chapter of his live.

The song is a tribute to his parents who both died at a young age. The lyrics are about living life as an orphan, which Joost is himself. That's why he says 'Euro-papa', 'being alone in Germany' and 'Papaoutai' (dad where are u?) and ends with this sad ending. His dad told him that there are no boundaries in the world, both in personal achievements and between countries. He actually is quite a big musician in The Netherlands, . starting of as a youtuber to escape the troubles of life he eventually made his first album “dakloos” (homeless) since then he has released 8 albums which were all very successful with millions of streams. He is also a very nice and loving person. 1983
@martijnsterrenburg447811 ай бұрын
It is a tribute song to his parents. He lost both parents at the age of 12 or 13. He enjoyed watching the Euro Song Contest with his father. He asked his father what boundaries were and he indicated that those are lines that people have agreed upon and have made up. The world has no borders. You can go anywhere, the world belongs to everyone. With this song he wants to end an unpleasant time for himself and tell his father that he was right. And thank them again. Dutch people are very proud, disciplined and love parties. But we also have our sorrows and Joost does not run away from it and shares it. This way he can continue.

To answer your question as a dutch girl; the song is far from the genres I usually listen to BUT I’m actually obsessed with it 🤩 Gabber/hardstyle music is such a dutch product, we’ve never done this before at eurovision tho, and it was about time! I’ve been waiting for the dutch jury to be more daring and do something different than ballads. This song is such a breath of fresh air for me, a happy danceable melody with a very deep and emotional meaning lyrically! Joost as a person is such a delight and deserves the world, even without knowing him personally I feel so proud of him overcoming all the tragedy that happend to him and turning it into his driving force to achieve his dreams 🥹 I can’t wait to see this live on stage! I remember sitting with him in the bus (we lived in the same village) after he did his first big performance at a dutch festival. In the bus he was surrounded with all the props he used during the show. Amazing to see that this boy I saw in the bus is now on the eurovision stage. Really shows that everything is possible.

Joost lost his parents when he was 13 and 14. The lyrics relate to him missing his parents. Travelling through Europe, but he keeps feeling alone. But he listened to their advice, as he says at the end: "Dad (which is 'papa' in Dutch, therefore Europapa) told me that we are all humans ans that there are no boundaries. You see dad, I DID listen to you. Always missing you". The burning building at the end represents the end of his grief. And the burning photo is of him and his parents during a holiday somewhere in Europe. All at all, it is him saying he still misses them, but also an ode to them.

Lyricaly its actually pretty well constructed. He is using a lot of sentiment for not only the dutch people, but also using things that other countries can relate with. If you also listen closely, he uses a Scooter like intro, and on the second verse the melody is really 2 unlimited like. Who are all internationally superstars. Next to that he brings Gabber sentiment in the last dancey part, which is/was a very popular sub-culture where mostly 90 kids can identify them self. Then he starts the Drama part which brings you to a complete other emotion you were currently in. You start to listen, get captivated and emotional. I think this is very effective especially in events like Eurovision. We will see what it will bring us. I was really sceptical at first, but we have a definit banger here.

Joost Klein was orphaned at a youg age and his father told him once when they were living in a small rural place that there are no real borders they are a construct. So you can make your own world. The end and the burning is a metafor of saying goodby to the past, you cannot forever bring (sad) memories with you. Its what he explained on dutch tv interview when asked about the ending. The man in the car is DJ paul Elstak famous in the nineties. S10 a former eurovision entry is in the diner scene.

I am Dutch and really happy about the song. We kind of need this kind happy vibe in these times where for years drama is ruling the world. Really love the 90 s vibe from when I was young and the hardcore techno. At the same time it is not as superficial as it sounds. He starts telling that his father in a tiny village in the north of the country told him there are no boundaries, the world is out there and you can go there, by then he was still to small, had no money, no transport ect but now he is really going out there even though they are not here to witness it. Papa(dad) was right. There are no real boundaries not on land and not in opportunities. (He even designed the costum himself on a simple tablet and they managed to make it). So much fun, so much happyness and hope but still with a layer of sadness because it would have been nice if his parent where here to see it. And then ends that finally we are all just human beings and telling his dad that he still misses him every dad ,quote:" but see dad, I did listen to your message". Love the unexpected twists but mainly the song makes me smile a lott.

Through this song everyone can immediately see what kind of person Joost is and what kind of humor he has. 12 points for the Netherlands yeeaahhhh greetings from the Netherlands🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺

I'm Dutch; "boomer"; don't like rap music; indifferent to dance music and the Eurovision songcontest in general. This one however does move me in a very positive way. What an unexpected end! For him I hope he wins.

My reaction as a dutch guy : I love this song, it's in my head all day and everyday. Admitted, i had to listen a few times before it grew on me. The kids here love it and they do "hakken" as well. Me and my son "hak" several times a day.

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is happy hardcore - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, also called gabber music. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art.

I'm mega proud of him. He's a wonderful guy struggling with the loss of his parents, and he's now doing what he promised his father. Enter the Eurovision for the Netherlands. This music is not my type of music but somehow he did it for me. Totally stole my heart. It is music from my younger years, but I did not hang out in that scene. I do love he's using it. It's so different from what we normally send. Bring it on Joost, go get the win❤❤❤❤❤

I’m Dutch and I ‘m so stoked to see this true representation of Dutch culture take the stage at EV24. It took “only” 30 years to get Happy Hardcore and Gabber (rave) Music in the EV spotlight… Long overdue! Douze Points!!!! ❤

I had to listen 2, because I was like WTF is this. Maybe I'm just getting old 😂. But now I'm thinking this could be it! I actually like it better the more I hear it.

'I am running from myself, I ask everyone for help! I'll even give people money but no one wants to help!'. That's deep. Even the reference to Stromae's Papaouatai is about a boy who loses his father as a child. Joost is a poet, an artist and shooting for gold!!

It sounds emotional because it is. It's a song about grief. The sound and lyrics are definitely deceiving pretending to be happy, but the lyrics also are very clear that it's not just superficial if you're willing to listen. The end pulls you into the message that was there all along. You spend the song running though Europe and him saying he will stay here his entire life, but it's also a person travelling through Europe trying to find a place that fixes an issue (the grief) he carries with him. In the end he found his peace. "In the end we're all human beings. My father once told me it's a world without borders/limitations. 'I miss you every day' is what I secretly whisper. See dad, I listened to you"
