That's what I said. When I saw the older gentleman sitting on the bed staring down and Joost hit his heart with his fist, I knew he had probably lost his dad. I went back and rewatched every scene...Joost is very clever. He makes the audience think and replay the clip...He also incorporated a theme about Europe and a music style associated with the Netherlands to represent in a contest like Eurovision.

I think the lyrics are a mix of sadness and happiness at the same time. Because even though he struggles through his journey, by losing his parents, he still lives his dream and the dream of his parents to travel freely from one place to another within europe while connecting with different people. Not only that, also following his passion for music not stopping "until they say. yes, yes, he does that very well ey!".

papa means dad in Dutch. Europapa is dedicated to his dad which passed away due to cancer. He was just a little kid 12 years old. His mom died a year later due to a cardiac arrest. Writing songs is like a therapy to dedicate songs mostly to his parents. His father give him the mindset that there are no borders. Borders are just invented by people so dare to think without limits. why don't you invent your own world. If you want to know more about Joost Klein you should give Florida 2009 a shot and Wachtmuziek. Both are in Dutch but there are lyrics for you can translate in English. It gives a better understanding who he is.

Research: Europapa = Eurodad. 12 points for The Netherlands. An ode to his father who passed away when he was 12 years and his mother who passed away when he was 13 years. His father told him that there are no borders / boundaries, no limits. Go, travel and discover Europe and the world. He promised his father that one day he will be singing at the Eurovision. They used to watch it together when he was a child. Now he made it, because he will be on stage this year. Everywhere he travelled he carried the pain and grief with him. The fire simbolise letting go of the pain of no having his parents and the start of a new chapter in his life.

You got it, man you really understood it. You did not know the backstory about Joost and why this song is a tribute to his parents. His father died when he was 13-ish and his mother died a year later. His dad (papa in Dutch) always told him that borders are just silly manmade things. Joost carries the sadness with him but knows he must not let that drag him down all of the time. This video has so many hidden gems/ referrals, and yes you found some of them. But it is hard for non-Dutch to find them all. The musical hommage through techno, house, dance, gabber, and EDM is so well done. Hidden gems like f.e. DJ Paul Elstak, New Kids, The Last Supper, Max Verstappen etc. etc. are brilliant. This is a work of Art, a masterpiece. I' 'm so proud of him. So proud to have him represent our small country, he makes me smile he makes me wanna dance, gives me goosebumps, and makes me cry. Hello! It is gabber style, happy hardcore. This was a very populair beat and dance in the 90's in the Netherlands and some of us still love this, Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries/borders, His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision, He has gone through so many challenges in life.

He is not saying 'stay here till you die', he is saying he will stay till he dies. Meaning he doesnt want to leave, its positive. No Hotel California here :). There is a deeper layer in this song (about his parents who died when he was young. The song is an ode to them as well. ), but im sure Joost would want you all to just enjoy the song. Empty the brains and go completely nutts for a couple of minutes, enjoy life to the fullest, thats what happy hardcore is all about! Glad you enjoyed it Sir 😁👍.

Best reaction up to now. I've seen about 20 reaction videos to this song already, from numerous different countries. This one is by far my favourite, picking up so many details without even knowing Dutch or Joosts background, and maybe not much about Dutch culture either. But still picking up so many important things. Read into the background of the song, read the lyrics again, with translations (and do know that the Dutch 'grenzen' can be translated as borders as in the official video's, but also translates to limits...) Know that papa is the Dutch word for dad. You see him touching his heart when saying 'papa' and that has a very specific reason. As has the From me to my parents part at the end. That is a sad story with a beautiful line to it in itself, as actually this complete song is. Read into it more, and as you understand more you will get to love this song more and more and more. It ís a sad story, and yet there is a lot of positivity in it. It is a happy tune, with sad notes. It's both about being together as Europe, as about traveling Europe, as it is a (heavy) travel within his own mind and soul. Read the background story. You are going to love this song even more, and never forget it... (And there are extremely many fun Dutch parts and eastereggs in it too if you know a lot about Dutch (music) culture and landscape)

The 2nd verse with the German goes like this: I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone I'm in Italy, but it still hurts I'm running from myself Crying for help all day I'm even paying people for help (therapy) But there's no one that helps me The house are his childhood memories and connected grief, which he burns at the end. He's now fulfilled his promise to his dad by being at Eurovision so now he can hopefully move on with his life. The song is about being sad but trying to make the most of it anyway. It makes you happy and emotional at the same time. A true masterpiece.

The song is wonderful. Many people forget what Europe means. We are neighbors and friends. We have all the freedoms that others only wish for. That's exactly what he wants to tell us with this song. What I find particularly beautiful is that he sings it in Dutch. If I could, I would give him 12 bonus points for that. For the song from me from Germany 12 points. Stromae is a Belgian singer, singing in French. His dad is from Rwanda, his Mam from Belgium. Stromae grew up without his father. Papa ou te? French for Dad, where are you? Joost can relate to that because his father died when he was 12. The song is a hommage to Europe and his daddy (Papa in Dutch), so it is mushed together Europa (Europe in Dutch) + Papa = Europapa. You are a very good and intelligent listener sir, my compliments. To get the sad sub-tone so quickly amidst the upbeat.

The style is a mix between 'gabber' and 'happy hardcore' music. When the beat dropped the guys are 'aan het hakken' (do the hakken dance) which is basically a 'gabber' music style dance. Its all very 1990/2000-ish vibe.

The song certainly has a sad undertone. Joost lost both his parents within a year when he was a teenager. His father believed in him and told him he would be on the Eurovision stage someday. There are more references like him referring to Stromae with his song Papaoutai, which means 'dad where are you?'. The clip shows him in his younger years (when he was 12) and shows his dad (if he had not died when he was 12, his mother died a year later). At the end he is talking to both and his childhood photo and house are burning. He lost that all when he was young. So it is kind of a sad ending indeed. You can add another layer to this ending because a part of Europe also is burning. The first part is about being a European and being or becoming proud of that also. Stand together.

You are right, the story in the song is very sad, his parents died when he was 12, his father told him to travel because there are no borders anymore, so he travels, but it’s not really traveling, it’s running for himself and his feelings. I hadn't realized it yet, but I think you may be right about "Welcome to Europe, stay here till I die". As @Lillith. said, the whole EU open borders and travel theme running through the song mostly serves to highlight you can't run away from yourself. But this phrase further trivializes open borders by highlighting it's still just swapping one set of borders for another. Klein said he was inspired by his late father telling him borders are human inventions. I think the lesson he learned ("I listened to you") is actually to free yourself from self-doubt.

As I take it (as a dutch person) this song is both honouring his parents who died when he was young, and his dad told him borders are made up lines limiting us. So it's pro EU because we are (mostly) working together now but it's also very fragile and we are watching the house burning down. Now is the time to be proud of being united.
