The thing about this song Wachtmuziek: it sounds so positive, but the lyrics are quite serious. In the end it represents how Joost approaches life: even with losing his parents, which he refers to in this song as well, he has a positive view and wants to make the most of it. And I think in this day and age folks like him are essential! Go for it Joost!!

Joost (the "oo" should be pronounced like "oa" in toast) is very popular in The Netherlands and abroad. He recently had a number 1 hit in Germany, Austria and Switzerland! He's from my region in The Netherlands, and even though I'm not a big fan of his music, I'm still proud of him for achieving this success. He had a very tough youth as both of his parents passed away. The song Florida 2009 is about this as well. Joost uses many different styles in his music. I'm very curious about his Eurovision entry! I think it's great that we chose something that's a bit out of the box.

Because of the happy hardcore style and his way of dancing whitch the dutch call hakken it has the sound and feel of a happy and fun song. But it is a very serious song. Wacht muziek means waiting music, like when you are onhold when you call a call center. It is about not receiving the help you need from professional mental care because of long waiting lines. Joost lost his parents in a short period of time on a young age. He has happy memories watching ESC with his parents. This is his big dream!

'Friesenjung' (1993) previously was a song from Otto walkes, a very well known German comedian. The melody was from Stings 'Englishman in New York'. Since Otto is so popular I don't know if everyone get the conection between the recent 'Friesenjung' and Joost. But I think that maybe it could be a hook for some people if they knew. I think it would be fun for him to slip in a visual easteregg so to speak to make sure German comentators a talking about it, especially if it gets placed badly, to make sure German commentators are speaking about it and maybe get a few extra points. Depends on the song he chooses though.

I'm nor excited nor disappointed by choosing Joast (I know it's Joost). But I think it all depends on the song and the styles he uses. Gabberhouse is factually retro-music from the 90's and all my friends here in Rotterdam love it because it put the city back on the map during that period. Recently a film has been made about gabber / hardcore / hardstyle and it's called 'Hardcore never dies ' and tbh honest I think it's too much of a Dutch thing. But wouldn't it be great if the whole world knew about 'hakken' (chopping wood or dancing on the back of your feet?). And if he decides to go all the way including D&B, great lyrics and a great performance? Could be our next Kaarija. But not the same. Finland is more metal and the Netherlands is more techno. Maybe the AVROTROS does think it's time for something different. We have a reputation after Anouk. Meaningful songs and it's probably is going to be the same. But with a different language. Urban poetry in dutch? Try to translate that. At ESC he has something like a gunfactor (dutch word) and we'll see. Always lovely to see you and especially back in Ireland.

Great artist, hopefully he brings a real gabber banger. The comparisons to Kaarija are a bit silly though (no shade ) because they make completely different music (rap/ industrial/ synthpop vs gabber/ hardcore/ punk rave). Eurovision fans don’t tend to listen to alternative genres of music, but if you actually know a thing or two about the kind of music both of them make, they aren’t even similar. Anyway, this is a bit of a risky choice as alternative and niche music genres don’t tend to do that well in Eurovision, so presentation and stage presence will be deciding here. I suggest you watch his 2023 live concert in the Lowlands, he can get the crowd going and if we’re going to compare him to Kaarija, he is actually the better vocalist and has better vocal control. The Netherlands have been my favorite ESC country in the last 5 editions, finishing as my favorite song twice - in 2019. and 2022. and being in my top 10 in 2020. and 2023. The only one I didn’t like was 2021.

Hmmm, it's so odd - I see a LOT of praise coming from Dutch fans on here, but actually this choice leaves me feeling very anxious. I get the similarities to Kaarija, but the one thing Kaarija had was charisma, in droves... I've watched a few of Joost's videos and that "charisma" thing is still lacking for me - perhaps the Dutch lyrics really endear him more to Dutch speakers than non-nationals? Please please please, don't do a chipmunk voice..

I'm sorry but it's only my honest opinion here but I think this choice will backfire badly in May. There's no doubt he's a funny and genuine guy, but his music is far too divisive. I'm all for quirky and different, but from watching several of his videos, I just can't get into his music. I can't see his music appealing to the majority of televoters. With Finland this year, the song had it's critics but there was a coherent song behind the quirky fun and games. Joost will have to bring something really special to the table, because up to now, I'm just not getting the connection with his music.

Another NQ great you would have thought they would take it more serious this year but this sound to me they give up on the golden era.

How do you know that? Joost is very popular in several European countries and his songs really connect to a younger audience. He recently had a number 1 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He was chosen based on not only the studio version but also a live performance for the juries.

@markuserikssen I'm from Austria, but I've never heard of him before. Either you're making stuff up, or I'm old and don't know any of my country's no1s anymore. Or probably even both.

@@in_wino_veritas I'm from Germany, the only reason I know he was in the charts is cause the song was recommended to me on KZbin. I don't think it's the kind of song played anywhere I'd frequent 😂 And as far as I know, he charted with a cover song. It's originally a song by Otto (a well-known and iconic German comedian), at least if that's really the one Joost charted with. So he had nostalgia bonus in the german-speaking countries, especially since Otto was part of the project.
