Eileen Aldis My wife and I visited Amsterdam last fall and stayed in a Airbnb in the Jordaan area just 2 blocks away from the Ann Frank house. It was amazing, we used the canal boat rides to explore the city through the canals but most of our exploring during our 4 day stay was by walking and I’m glad we did that. A combination of visiting old gothic churches, red light district and the many bars around there, different museums, cafes and restaurants during the morning and at night. It was so laid back and definitely one of my favorite places in Europe to visit.

The nine streets and the canals aren’t actually part of the Jordaan. The Canals were designed as a fancy boulevard for the poshest members of society. The Jordaan by contrast was a workers neighbourhood. If you look at the city map you can see that the canals follow a deliberate pattern, while the Jordaan was just build on the existing agricultural (Polder) land. This made it a lot cheaper to build.

Hey…I really liked this video! Jordaan exudes a relaxed feeling and an elegant charm. Flowers and greens sprouting from windows, pots and barrels! So many charming windows and gables…Quaint shops, bars, cafes, river house’s and canal boats….Forests of bicycles! Hustle and bustle for sure…But from people and bikes and boats…All quiet and serene. What a wonderful place in the middle of Amsterdam! I liked what you said about Anne Frank. Her story is an enduring lesson for humanity, that will always deserve our respect. A lovely video. Thank you.

Hi Jim, We didn't see the Saturday markets but I love markets in general so I'm sure I'd love it too. The Jordaan definitely seems like the perfect place to wander. That's how I found The Mouse Mansion! "Changing moods" makes a lot of sense, too, because the weather varied a lot throughout the day: rain, sun, repeat.

Hello Eileen! What a great video, thanks for sharing your experiences and favorite places. I had 3 trips planned to Amsterdam years back, but all fell through. Finally in 2016 I made my first trip...and fell in love with Amsterdam. I visited twice in 2017 and have another visit scheduled for this May (2018). My favorite areas are the Jordaan neighborhoods as well as the Oud Zuid. They're quite different, but both have their unique charms and a coziness to them I really love. I had dinner three times at "de vergulde Gaper" during my trips and enjoyed watching the world go by, Amsterdam style. I also discovered a GREAT shop - "Property Of..." - on the corner of Herrengracht and Herrenstraat: it's a small corner store offering great bags, rucksacks, watches, wallets, etc., and the sales people could not have been friendlier! They immediately offer you coffee and there is absolutely NO pressure to purchase, like so many other small shops. The Nine Streets is a favorite area as well, and the shops are fun and diverse as well as offering so many restaurants and cafés. I feel so at home there! Try visiting the Oud Zuid, if you haven't already. It's VERY quiet and borders the Vondel Park. One of my favorite cafés is "CoffeConcepts", where I can honestly say I have had THE best coffee ever. The streets are lined with wonderful, elegant buildings and "George" restaurant (just down the street from CoffeeConcepts) is excellent and great for people watching. Thomas
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
WOW thanks so much for all these awesome suggestions, Thomas! I'm going to keep it all in mind for a future trip :) Now I'm craving delicious coffee! ☕️What a coincidence that you also sat at de vergulde Gaper! We got lucky with some sunshine at just the right moment and sitting there watching the world go by was one of my favourite memories of the visit. I hope you have a wonderful trip in May and please let me know if you make any more great Amsterdam discoveries!

I returned after 30 years in the 90's and all the local jargon is lost. Found that out when I ordered an "Uitsmijter" in a local cafe. Cafe in Amsterdam is a cross between a coffee shop and a bar. Typically you order lunch in a hurry too. Uitsmijter is a bed of shaved ham and 2 fried eggs (sunny side up) on slices of freshly baked bread. The magic was gone the waitress spoke to me in ABN aka posh Dutch. The house I lived in during the first 12 years of my life is part of a larger luxury complex. No more street soccer, kasti (rounders) the 2 sports which helped me to hold my own in Australian footy and cricket in its various forms. I remember the call when I kicked a footy ball back in the local park. "Looking for a game mate?" Hope you enjoyed your stay but plenty is lost after a generation.

Hi Eileen! I booked another trip to Amsterdam - in August. I CAN'T WAIT!! This time around I hope to visit Haarlem and perhaps go back to the Van Goch Museum...my first time there, I cried pretty much the entire time - seeing his moving paintings just inches away, as well as knowing his amazing and tragic story. I felt pretty much the same being inside the Anne Frank Huis. Knowing all that had transpired there: the emotions and power of those most frightening days and years. I moves you to your core. Where are you both now?

That was a great video. But the Jordaan is not from jardin, the Dutch have many French words in their language and would not make such a reckless conversion. The princengracht was always called the princengracht. The best reason I think is the simplist, the owner of the land was named Jordaan and it was called Jordaan's land then shortened to Jordaan after the buildings were built. I live in the heart of the Jordaan just around the corner from the Mouse Mansion and I agree that it is a lovely place to live.

Hi there, I've answered this comment before, as you saw, but, as you wrote an additional comment, I'll repeat. The Anne Frank House, De Vergulde Gaper, and the Little 9 Streets are on the opposite side of the Prinsengracht which, yes, is the official border of the Jordaan, I believe. I said in the video that the Westerkerk is on the border. Lots of sources include these areas and sights in the Jordaan as it's separated only by a canal width. This video is an informal guide to the Jordaan neighbourhood. I don't think anything I've included is misleading. You're entitled to disagree, of course.

The name "JORDAAN" is derived from the French language meaning Le Jardin. Many courtyards with gardens and the naming of streets after flowers also point in the direction of jardin as the origin of Jordaan.

the best and most comfortable way to enjoy the ex-workingclass Jordaan is not to belong to that class and enjoy dady's money.

“No Females Allowed” sounds like it would be a cool name for a corporate business 🤔

I've answered this before so will paste it here.

Hi there, I take it you're the same person writing on Reddit. The Anne Frank House, De Vergulde Gaper, and the Little 9 Streets are on the opposite side of the Prinsengracht which, yes, is the official border of the Jordaan, I believe. I assume this is why you've written 'wrong.' I said in the video that the Westerkerk is on the border. Lots of sources include these areas and sights in the Jordaan as it's separated only by a canal width. This video is an informal guide to the Jordaan neighbourhood. I don't think anything I've included is misleading. You're entitled to disagree, of course.

I went outside of the Anne Frank house and didn't bother to go inside (I didn't really care). Does that mean I am not human?
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
It's all up to you if you feel moved to go inside or not.

I have also not gone in the Anne Frank House but have walked by it both times I have been in AMS. I do care, but not interested in standing in line or to see inside. if you literally don't care than yes you are a sorry excuse for a human being.
