I just saw a note from someone not happy with how you do and film your quilts. First I am 75, and been quilting a long time, second, I have learned a great deal from you but most of all I love the patterns and how you present yours and other quilt companies patterns. I am sorry that other quilters cannot just move on if they are not happy with anyone's work. Personally my quilts have become much more impressive because of you. Thank you for the care and concern you put into your quilts and your videos.

I'm a self taught quilter. I learned a lot from Donna about quilting and I refer to her videos all the time. Plus I buy all my precuts from Jordan fabrics. Cutting and binding are my weaknesses. But I am practicing.

THANK YOU for doing things differently than the Quilt Snobs lol. I was in a class and created by binding just like you did (not on bias) you'd have thought I had committed a horrible sin! Was chastised in front of the entire class. Quilting is an art. Some people create their art differently than others. Thank you for showing just how individual quilting can be!

I have been quilting for about 15 years, and started watching your videos a few weeks ago. I want to thank you for changing my (sewing) life in two ways in particular: first, the idea of putting a weight at the top end of the ruler when you're cutting. Such a simple, seemingly obvious action, and yet it has made a HUGE difference in my ability to cut a straight line. Second - this method of binding the quilt. I have spent SO many hours doing it the way I was originally taught, and was never really happy with the results. The way you demonstrate in this video is SO much faster, and SO much neater. I can't thank you enough. Keep these videos coming!

Thank you for being willing to do your own thing and not worrying about the quilt police! (i.e. using fingernails to press, machine binding, not using a "name brand - funded by a company" machine, and even sewing the binding together with a straight seam - - kudos to you for not worrying about what everyone else says!) I also wanted to say thanks for getting right to the point, not having annoying music, and having well cropped, with appropriate close up shots. Thank for you and your team! And yes, I like your well modulated voice - it's easy to listen to.

True North Herbals It is a Juki industrial sewing machine. She has since updated her machine to one I’ve wanted her to get for a long time, which is a Juki 8700. This looks like that one but the motor doesn’t run constantly, only when it is sewing, so it is MUCH quieter. These machines goes much faster than you could ever sew and they are amazing machines. For sewing quilts, where you are just doing straight seams, it is awesome.

Again Donna thank you for being so precise and patient in your instruction. I can really feel that your are anticipating how a “newbie” would need to know each “inch” of a project and how to find the right spot to sew, the right folding method, and how to manipulate the fabric as you go along. It makes it so much easier to learn and “get it” in my head. 💕

Agreed...my grandmother got sick and died before being able to teach me...my mother stayed away from quilting and crocheting because of her mother's love of it...so I am self taught. a thumbs up would happen had she instructed watchers to IRON the seans. the time she spends "finger pressing" a smooth well pressed effort could be done. I can ALWAYS tell "homemade" items as person has not pressed open, flat or down the seams. Pressing seams with a good steam press will always generate a professional appearance .

@carolpickens3333
@carolpickens3333 4 жыл бұрын
Replying to Gayle Springers comment, I'm sorry but I have to disagree at least somewhat about the ironing of the binding. Yes it would look very flat and neat if it's iron however way too many people would be ironing the quilt border in order to iron that binding flat. this can distort the appearance of the entire quilt and that the border would get mushed down with a hot iron and steam therefore I much prefer Donna's method. If you were a perfectionist and a professional at ironing or in this case pressing then it would look very nice more than likely. So I think your comment was pretty well unjustified. Just a personal opinion.

@marytramp5678
@marytramp5678 2 жыл бұрын
it was nice to see you make those mistakes, even though they weren't intentional. it shows that even someone as experienced as you can still make them, and lets people like me, that are new not get so frustrated that we just give up, bc other quilters make it look so easy and never make mistakes. probably bc they edit them out. I really appreciated the attention to detail when it came mitering ther corners, showing exactly how to do it, where to stop, how to fold it, where to start, the backtacking (most don't even mention that. they do it but never mention it), and then you even went on to talk about some problems you may run into. i appreciate the fact that your sewing machine is an older model, even if it is a commercial one. most videos have brand new multi gadget, multi everything, that new people have no idea what they are even talking about, much less have on their machines. bc nobody just starting out is going to buy a fancy machine.

All didn't explain in detail, and their cameras angles placement made it difficult to see what they were doing. I'm so glad I found your video. Your instructions are given calmly and slowly. My grandmother was seen as a perfectionist in most areas of her life. Everything was just so. Now that I am learning to quilt, I love to find mistakes in her quilts. It helps me to see her as who she was and not the persona she gave off. She was human and flawed just like the rest of us. The difference was she didn’t go about telling others of her errors. Lol! When she died, there were many things in her past that we didn’t know about. I am able to see her truthfully now. Just wish I could tell her how amazing she was even in her imperfections. I hope she knew that she was worthy of love just as she was and didn’t need to be perfect.

Hadn't done any of this type of binding for a while, so wanted to review the technique. As I am doing baby quilts now, I will sew the binding to the *back* first, then fold over to stitch in the ditch from the back. This makes the small flap at the edge of the finished binding come out on top and Donna's method of stitching comes out so evenly that it looks really nice and leaves the back of the quilt, the side that will touch baby, nice and smooth. Thanks again, Donna, for another great tutorial!

I've learnt more about quilting and sewing in the fortnight I've been watching you Jordan than I have in a lifetime of sewing, thank you. Totally addicted to watching you, all I have to do know is make a quilt that turns out as amazing as yours.

I started watching this video and, as usual, was thinking I either have no talent for this....or I really need her machine and table. I can tell you my binding would not look like hers, which is so depressing. And then.......she made a boo-boo! It made my entire day, I tell you. Just to know I'm not the only one makes a huge difference. I look forward to Donna's email every day. It is my "to do" first thing in the morning. She is a natural teacher.

I had never seen the tip about using a pin to help guide that fold of the miter into the correct position. Thank You. I am definitely going to try this method for binding.

My mom left me her hand stitched queen sized quilt top, the back and batting plus the bind material. She told me to do the quilting “stitch in the ditch” and then add the binding. But I’m not a quilter. Now I know how to finish it. Thank you so much.

I tried this machine method on my last quilt and it worked beautifully. You have probably saved my arthritic hands a lot of pain in the future. Thank you for your clear instructions. I had hesitated doing machine binding in the past because I could never seem to get it to look nice. This time, following your directions it worked so well.

I’ve been binding the other way for too long and have rarely been pleased with the results. I am definitely using this method going forward. None of my quilts are going to end up at a show and if they did I guess the quilt police would have to deduct points or what have you. I appreciate this share and the clarity with which you explain your method. Thank you!

I can tell you make many many quilting projects from the neatness of the seams, the super straight edges and the perfect back side of the binding. There is no way I will EVER be able to have such a professional looking finish.

Love the tutorial. You can avoid having an issue with your binding seams ending up in less than desirable places (like happened in the video) if you "audition" your binding on your quilt before you sew it down. Just place your binding on your quilt and pin the beginning in place, then run the binding around the outside of your quilt until you reach the beginning again and see if the places where you joined your binding ends up in places you don't want (like corners). If so, go back and move where you will begin your binding until all your seams are in places you are happy with THEN begin to sew it down. :)
