I lived in Australia for about one and a half years. My favorite involuntary pet was a Huntsman Spider. I woke up one morning with it sitting on my bedpost and just decided to leave it there. It kept my room clean of any insects, other spiders and once, I swear, it killed a baby snake. We made a deal: A place to stay in exchange for pest control. We became best buddies.

I once had a jumping spider on my back patio. He did absolutely no harm, and just wandered around the patio eating bugs. I actually got kind of attached to him, and he got fairly big feasting on the bugs that were attracted to the patio light. I felt like I had an agreement with him. He ate the bugs I don't like, and I left him alone. He was actually kind of cute. They're very smart, inquisitive, fuzzy, and have no interest in biting humans. Fun fact: People keep jumpers as pets and build beautiful enclosures for them. Look it up. One guy taught his jumper to do high fives.

We have really tiny and highly venomous spiders here called redback spiders here in Australia (like black widows, in fact I think they're in the same family). They're nasty, a hell of a lot worse than huntsmen who are very chill and sweet. Funnel Web Spiders are pretty bad too, but they don't tend to come inside the house like huntsmen, they prefer the garden.

@Erizedd9 ай бұрын
@@Wolfer13579 Well, I live rurally and they're only really a potential problem when the weather gets very hot. You do need to be a bit careful where you walk and be sure to make a bit of noise too, specifically when walking in nature, and in warm sunny spots where they like to bask, but even the venomous snakes will slither away if they hear or see you coming, and providing you give them the space to do so. It's fine, honestly - we have red-bellied black snakes (shy and skittish) and eastern brown snakes (second most venomous snake in the world and not shy at all) where I live, but both will slither away if you make it clear that you're there. :)
@jazzbeeetazzbeee9 ай бұрын
@@Erizedd yeah one time an eastern brown came into the shed on our farm and mum talked to it and it just left 😂 A story I heard from my dad regarding red bellies: when he was a teenager he saw a stick on the ground and decided to kick it. Then afterwards the stick slithered away Also I love huntsmen so much - the dog of the spider world is such a good description of them. I had one walk into the kitchen while I was baking as if it were a toddler about to ask a bunch of ‘why’ questions. They really are fine, my mum has picked up some of the baby ones by hand. One time a baby she picked up refused to leave the house so she just brought it back inside and left it. Fun fact, spiders (arachnids) don’t have a sense of smell. They use the hairs on their bodies to detect changes in the chemicals and movements in the particles in the air. In other words the scent isn’t important, what’s important is that you disrupt the flow of particles around the spiders so much so that to them, they sense a giant threat moving so close that they feel the urge to run away. Another explanation would be that the specific scent has a chemical balance that the arachnids feel in danger near those specific chemicals.

I hate bugs, too! I was traumatized as a very young child by cellar spiders…so those are the worst for me! 😳

Daddy long legs is what I used to call house spiders and they were scary but compared to living in Florida I would welcome one.

I truly do want to visit Australia because it's a beautiful country. But those spiders are so terrible for my mental health
@Erizedd10 ай бұрын
They're honestly not that bad, and you'd be safe, don't worry. Some people who come here are actually disappointed if they don't see a spider or snake at some point during their visit - probably because they were mostly in the cities and there's not many there in comparison, but even in rural areas it's nothing crazy.

@@Erizeddyeah i visited australia and traveled from daintree to ningaloo and mostly through the less-inhabited areas but didnt see many spiders and only one snake. Its pretty normal compared to north america except for the venom

Funny thing about Irish Spring soap, we knew that it kept bugs away so at girls camp we had a literal stash of Irish Spring soap to bath with in the lake AND we made soap necklaces 😂

I jumped when the giant spider moved, and screamed when the huntsman spider jumped 😂 I can’t with spiders. How the hell does a spider get that big!!! I’m with you I’m never going to Australia. Or the Middle East where the Camel Spider lives.
