Jordan Peterson shares his thoughts on the nature of desire and the question of nature versus nurture for desire. Please subscribe by clicking the button above for more mind-opening videos.
Abstract:
Human beings are not mere cognitive or representational machines, matching the reality of ongoing perceptions against the cold, calculated expectations of our actions. Instead, we interact with the world as if it matters, as it does, since we are alive, and wish to stay that way. Thus, the matter of the world is something that is meaningful, and that meaning is real, rather than something added, subjectively, to an essentially meaningless but in some manner more real and more fundamental substrate. Our perceptions themselves, our visions of reality, are deeply and necessarily informed by desire.
We build the world of desire from the bottom up; our embodied structures shape our basic motivations, which we develop and render more sophisticated through our capacity for social interaction and cognitive abstraction. At the most primordial levels, we share motivational structure and function with other animals, far down the evolutionary chain of being. At the upper levels, we arrange and organize our individual motivations into complex social games; above that, we play games with the rules of the games themselves, allowing the shared social structures that organize our motivations so that we remain predictable to ourselves and each other to change and adapt to new circumstances.

Jordan is a Treasure. A sage of Western philosophy. You listen to him when you’re depressed; when your happy; when you’re curious. He gets into your mental framework and clears out the cobwebs and the dust and restructures the way you view the world. And you’re a better person for it.

Jordan Peterson is one of a few select speakers who I listen to whenever I crave a voice of reason in my life. If J. B Peterson was the prime minister of Canada, I think it would be a better country. I know it my seem like a silly comment but he is very wise. In today's world, we lack wisdom on a scale that it makes me ill to think of it's consequence.

If he was and the true puppet masters let him have the majority of power I probably would pop on over from the USA. 🤣 We have our own puppet masters with a mentally diminished puppet. We could also use JP if they wouldn't try to control him. Someone like JP is better in a puppet master position though. I think he would be great for formulating strategies but letting someone a bit on the narcissist side to be the voice piece. Let them answer the idiot media and deal with the threats from other country leaders. Mean while JP would lay out the plan and strategy without needing to fly everywhere and worry about the stress of always being in front of a camera with people talking sh!t. Ehhhh!?!?😉😅

Jordan, some stories you tell here, I've heard few times, but still it is never boring, cause of your passion, it seems it is always the first tine. You are really a strong example how to be, not left, not right, you are where reason is, in the center where the truth picks the best from both sides. No talking head, a birther of the now, the now, the now. It's impressing watching and hearing you evolve, from second to second, a true seeker, a true speeker, a true finder and expresser. Not more to say, just, if there is a higher source heshe must be proud of you Jordan!

@@millacolic that’s what I was thinking as well. He didn’t make any type of logical arguments that I could see. They seem to be inconsistent, vague, and he veers off into tangents frequently. Well I am so enthused by this “clearly” life experienced professor and his lectures on how to live a meaningful life that I, at 56 years of age, am getting the moral education of what I always “knew” within to be truth; and how to make the right decision and directions; albeit at the later years of my life. Nevertheless, that Professor Peterson endures to educate the world of the young, is a great and wonderful service to *mankind... {*I’ll leave out the Canadian Prime Sinister’s PC Bullshit for the weaker members of society to feast upon!} Well done Professor JB Peterson! I wish I had a better education than I did...However, it’s never too late to learn! 😊 Andy Kelly 🇬🇧 Godbless...if I can still say that? 😂

Andy...you caught my attention. Perhaps it was your well articulated banter, or maybe it was because we are the same age, or maybe I've been single too long & bored. Too bad Jordan has a cold, because his swallowing is, for whatever reason, so irritating to me! I was scrolling the comments, mainly to see if anyone else felt that way. I feel disappointeded in myself for not having that perfect empathy that I normally posses. I mean, at one point I was like, "damnit Jordan, knock it off with that swallowing shit!" Kinda harsh, right? Then I wondered why the hell it made me angry in the first place. Did it annoy other people too? Better check the comments.... where I read your comment....had to comment on your comment. With all this internal dialogue going on, contemplating reasons for my lack of empathy for Mr. Peterson's level of thirst and hard swallowing, how it almost made me angry then to sit & wonder why that was, I came to the final conclusion that, all things considered, what I was really doing was avoiding cleaning my house! Now that I've I've just killed 2 birds with one stone, I can go about my day justified in the fact that I did NOT waste time on the internet, I noticed something about myself, and also placed myself in your life for a moment. Ofcourse, that's only true if you actually read this....such babbling! Lol!

@mycattitude
@mycattitude 7 жыл бұрын
EDY el O It's hard to explain the joke, because it was rather dry, but I'll try. Peterson was explaining how children need to be touched in early stages of development, or they will literally die. Then he said, ''Who would have guessed that-not the Romanians''. It was just a flippant comment about a serious matter, because people find relief in dark humour. Romanians found themselves in a really bad time and lots of children went to orphanages that were underfunded and understaffed. Lots of kids died even though their most basic of necessities were attended to, because of the understaffing. That's my basic understanding.
@A_Box
@A_Box 7 жыл бұрын
Well I infer what you typed from what he said but Romanians seem to be a a group of people existing nowadays, from Romania. Are they known for their cold personality or something?
@mycattitude
@mycattitude 7 жыл бұрын
EDY el O Not that I've ever heard. I don't think it has to do w/ a stereotype at all. It just got a lot of public attention, and of course people love to judge when they've never had to be in a similar situation. It reminds me of all the Mother Theresa haters after Hitchen's grotesque comments about her Sisters of Mercy centers that help the dying in Calcutta, but weren't equipped as hospitals to give medicine and such.

He says he needs to look into the crucifixion and the passion for a few more years Before he can give clear thoughts on the matter. He has arrived there already through his actions before he can articulate the complexity of the Jesus story. This man loves humanity. That is why his energy and stamina are boundless. To be a Christian means not to put Jesus on a pedestal, but to conduct yourself as closely to him as you can. Jordan lives this Christ-like mandate in real time daily. Tell the truth to yourself. Take the responsibility for your actions. This is the start to unraveling the hell you are in. Then make a plan for what heaven looks like for you, and think about the steps you need to take to get there. It will get worse before it gets better. Period. The people you surround yourself with now may not appreciate you leaving them behind. You may have to serve time before you can get your life on track. But you have to "repent", which means to change your mind, which means to always tell yourself the truth, to wash away the lies you have told yourself.

Listen to the first not even 6 minutes of this video! He does not personally know the father of his son's teammate yet makes sweeping judgments about his personal life and a swing at his failed marriage. If you also listen to Sam Harris's 2nd Podcast with Peterson, he mentions the same experience.

Judgement or discernment? He is describing the behavior he is speaking against, and using this person as an anecdote. You might note he says it not disparagingly, but with disgust. The guys actions are harming his son in Peterson's opinion, and as a clinical psychologist, he has probably seen enough of it to make that a discerning opinion.

It’s remarkable to me that this guy was given a professorship. But not surprising that the university didn’t want him and that Professor Bernard Schiff had to actually fight for him to get his position. What’s more is good old Bernard was right about Peterson’s lecturing style. It’s more like preaching instead of actually teaching. That’s all he’s doing here. He’s rambling. He’s not a biologist and he’s not an anthropologist and he’s not a very good psychologist either his reliance upon Carl Jung is childish to the point of being pathetic. And it’s interesting that he doesn’t seem to pop out some citations to demonstrate where he gets his information. But then again this is his lecture and it goes the way he wants I just… Find it rather strange that he seems to be… Making things up as he goes along and giving us basically his opinion. I would’ve liked to of taken one of his classes at the University of Toronto. I would’ve hammered him by asking for citations and referencing points for evidence. I’ve had some bad professors in the past, but this guy? He’s basically a well-dressed homeless man shouting at pigeons in the Park. If I recall correctly he was also an alcoholic for quite a long time. Not surprising because he fits the symptoms of being a dry drunk. Then of course there was benzodiazepine addiction which I found rather fascinating because… He being a clinician, you would think he would know how dangerous benzodiazepines can be. Isn’t he an expert? He constantly seems to remind the world that he is. That somehow… The danger of his benzodiazepine use flew over his head. And then of course there was a treatment in Russia. As a clinician, if I recall correctly, his specialty was addiction. Mini addiction experts would say that what he did was not only dangerous but also unethical. Is it possible that he didn’t want to face that he was a man with a weakness? His smug arrogance it’s quite obvious, even before he became known for lying about Bill C 16. That’s what I think is so strange about this man… Why lie about a law? And the years that I’ve been watching Jordan Peterson I’ve come to believe that he is highly mentally unwell. He’s a little more stable in this lecture but in other lectures I’ve seen and other interviews and appearances on television… He looks unbalanced. He can be an interesting man that makes some pretty good observations. But other than that? He would’ve been better off being a literature critic instead of masquerading as a psychologist. The very fact that this man, this man who seems mentally unwell and seems to live in his own head, was a therapist for far too long is disturbing to me. Jordan Peterson who seems to have an overly inflated opinion of himself, while also believing in some really fantastical things doesn’t strike me as someone that is capable of providing psychological care to the distressed. As of anything? He’s the one who needs not only psychological care but I think he needs to be committed.

@@cheesycheese7100 no not at all actually good because I feel bad for you and those who follow Jordan Peterson. He’s a very sick man. He’s not that bright. He’s basically the equivalent of Jim Jones just a more articulate version. Instead of making his followers and just cyanide laced Kool-Aid… He’s just going to tether you to him and drag him down into his madness. The funniest part I should say the most tragic part… Is all those whom say that they are better because of Peterson? They seem to… Still have the same problems with the failures of capitalism, their fear of women their lack of getting laid, or their lack of fulfillment with daily life. The reason I find it so strange is because… shouldn’t wisdom lead you to improvement instead of limping along…?

43:40 "as Christ said"...not true. The fictitious character (Jesus) is never said to have said that.
@micasilver210
@micasilver210 4 жыл бұрын
Jesus did not say that, indeed! However, He is not fictitious. That Christ lived and was crucified is a historical fact. So is that He was announced through the Jewish prophets in the OT ( 333 references to Christ)-beginning with the promise to Adam and Eve in Genesis 3,15; (one other, very obvious one Isiah 53,... 700 years before his coming.) The resurrection is the best witnessed and recorded event in antiquity. Christ= the atonement for the world, the antidote to death- the second death ( =eternal damnation for our sin-nature and its fruits, individually)- for which the first ( bodily ) death is only a symbol in the world. You, I and Mr. Peterson as well, will face the holy economy of God the Father, in which no soul can live without the blood of Christ covering our sins. Psychology & all the wisdom of the world will not save you. Hebr. 4, 13 (NKJV) And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. The preceeding vers tell that the word of God is living,....living & piercing,... into the spiritually dead soul, ...such as was mine. The verses after tell of the power and mercy of Christ, His willingness to cleanse us from all iniquity ( Hebr. 4, 14-15), all who come to Him. May you seek Christ and He will find you.

Kingdom of heaven is the name of the ideal goal we should be aiming for in all of our choices. it is a old and well known name which is why he chose it. It is the carrot that entices our moral donkey to heads towards those choices. Fascism is compared to hell. It was painted to represent the stick of punishment to dissuade our choices towards that direction.

I think that comment was probably referencing his research, an area he is pretty knowledgeable in. The bridging of the two ideas most likely came naturally, but for people on the outside I think it required another 5-10 minutes of explaining that relationship, rather than elaborating on what specific fascist regime he was talking about.

Nancy Mohass He's talking about the natural sexual instinctial desire alot of women generally have to be dominated. As members of the generally physically weaker sex women have been dominated by the stonger sex (men) for centuries, thereby creating a circuit in the brain of women for such things.

I can tell you from my perspective that particular story/movie has not inspired me in the slightest. I doubt very much if any guys I know could even sit through that movie. My wife's libido however spiked enormously while that was popular... If you'll remember it was quite the phenomenon. I think there's a big gap between our understanding of our subconscious and conscious selves.

I think there are many people out there attempting to reconcile spiritual/religious ideas with evolutionary ideas. This man seems to articulate the cohesion on those ideas very well. Hes definitely changed my mind about mythology and religion
@TheOlzee
@TheOlzee 7 жыл бұрын
Stephen Johnson I don't think it can be reconciled. I'm see if people seek that highly they will be glad to have found someone who has a cool theory but it holds no water, zero proof and pretty much disqualifies you as a Christian if you hold such views about it. The ego will surely argue this point though because dear me it wants to hold on to religion so badly.
@ThyReverend
@ThyReverend 7 жыл бұрын
Well it disqualifies you as a fundamentalist Christian for sure and any one whos mildly intelligent knows that taking the bible as literal history is basically philosophical suicide. I believe his theory holds water. R eligious inclination is an evolutionary adaptation to existing in a patriarchal hierarchy. Its a deep rooted strategy to help societies tend toward optimal existence (heaven) instead of degenerating to a painful existence (hell). Mythology is the outward expression of this deep rooted adaptation to reality. Snakes, dragons, kings, heros, virgins, etc. all symbolize archetypical aspects of human existence and help us adapt to the greater existence beyond just getting food, safety, sex, etc. Understanding and articulating mythology/religion from a Darwinian prospective is why Dr. Peterson is popular. Indeed i believe his theories hold water. Try living in "sin" for a few years or decades and see where that gets you. You'll inhabit a state of mind best described as hell. Science doesn't necessarily have a theory for how certain ways of acting in the world lead to worse or better existences, but humanity has been working on that since the beginning, and religious ideas are the consiquence.
@TheOlzee
@TheOlzee 7 жыл бұрын
Stephen Johnson I agree with everything you wrote. When I say it holds no water I mean to hold such views disqualifies you as a Christian be sues that is not what Christianity tells you, it's meant to be literal. You can spin it however you want but petersons views are not shared by Christianity. It all seems really silly to me. People don't need to follow stories about dragons, gods, snakes, etc to learn how to behave. Plus you'd have to take on everything about Christianity which has so many laughable holes it makes no sense. Some good parenting will suffice.
@ThyReverend
@ThyReverend 7 жыл бұрын
Lol full agreement there. Good parents are hard to come by. Not is no one taught how to be a good parent, but there are soooo many distractions and things to attend to in this crazy world that the internet/media becomes the parent. Real scary. And peterson has further arguments to address why dragons, snakes, etc are necessary but no need to go into it here other than its useful to conceptualize god as a human male because than the huge system that we are small parts of becomes accessible with language. Its tough for our minds to interface with a vague concept such as "source" or "the universe" but our minds can interface with other humans, taking a huge load off of our brains. Make god too abstract and your brain just lets "him" float away. Anyways loved this discussion, rare to see anything like this in youtube comments lol. Have a good one
