@@lftr_react No one can find a place where Peterson outsmarted Helen Lewis.
@stenhendrix85387 күн бұрын
@@psychcowboy1 I've read a lot of your comments constantly repeating your request for a list of examples in which Dr. Jordan Peterson outsmarted Helen Lewis. I would deem it highly probable that you are going to ask me the same thing right after reading (or who knows, not reading) my comment. I'll try to explain this once for you, even though many have already tried. I won't provide examples. So go on, don't read the rest of my message and reply the same thing you've replies to everyone. To address your repeated request for specific examples of Dr. Jordan Peterson "outsmarting" Helen Lewis, I’ll first clarify the context and meaning of "outsmarting." A commonly accepted definition is: "to defeat or get the better of someone by being clever or cunning." However, the point many are making isn’t necessarily that Peterson defeated Lewis in a manipulative or cunning way (outsmarted). Rather, the suggestion is that Helen Lewis employed certain rhetorical tactics or attempted to misrepresent his views during their conversation. Despite these attempts, Peterson demonstrated intellectual clarity and composure, effectively sidestepping the traps she laid. This is what many are interpreting as him "outsmarting" her-not through trickery, but through intellectual consistency and the verbal ability to lay out again and again his basic principles of thought and his basic beliefs despite Helen trying to twist them. Helen Lewis often tried to frame Peterson's arguments in a way that could be perceived as extreme or socially unacceptable, potentially painting him as untrustworthy or harmful. Such framing could have serious consequences for Peterson’s public image and even his personal life. Yet, Peterson repeatedly countered these attempts by returning to the core of his arguments, refusing to be mischaracterized or cornered into positions he didn’t hold. That is the reason he may incidentally interrupt her, he corrects her when she is speaking incorrectly of him or his arguments. This avoiding of rhetorical pitfalls and preserving the integrity of his arguments under pressure is what many consider Peterson "outsmarting" Lewis. It’s less about cunning manipulation and "winning the conversation" and more about intellectual resilience in the face of adversarial questioning that is not at all part of genuine and open curiosity and debate. I'd like to repeat I expect your reply asking about the outsmarting examples. I won't list the examples as your question is wrong, Peterson fundamentally didn't "outsmart" her. I believe I did you one better. Because a true understanding of what I just wrote might enable you to find the right examples you are looking for yourself.

@@psychcowboy1 I know...well, unless you watch them speak. Lewis is a superficial first order thinker. She and her ilk cannot regard nuance or counterintuitive aspects of a system. This is why you see her regard wage gap as an issue of gender. She is unable to regard even a single layer down to the actual reasons for disparity. If we take a second example with the lobster, we see that she is unable to grasp the corollary aspect that Jordan is regarding. 'They urinate out of their faces' she proclaims. As if this has anything to do with the subject. She can't get past the very first aspect of the chosen example, which is that it is a crustacean. A child thinks in this way. I am a high school graduate & I could 'outsmart' this woman. What this illustrates is that it is no great feat to outsmart a person with Lewis's brand of deficiency. If you're having trouble finding a place where Jordan outsmarted Helen, you may be struggling with the homogeneity of her defeat which offers less contrast for which to point out a particular spot. Fans of 1st order thinkers tend to be 1st order thinkers themselves. Such types need high contrast to anchor their opinion upon (and then get it wrong for lack of depth). Not to worry, I can help you. Look at the timeline of this interview and click on a spot at random. There, you found a place. Glad I could help you out. Good talk.

lol did we watch the same video? I have no clue how he handled this well: he was defensive and throwing ad hominem at her the entire time, calling her foolish, talking over her, and steering the conversation away from any direct questions. I could hardly stomach how ridiculously little he was able to actually debate the topics at hand, even when she would cede points to create common ground. It's absurd and frightening that people see how JBP shoots out random unsupported intuitions and somehow she this as win. Maybe his statements confirm their prejudices?
@XXPHYSCO1132 жыл бұрын
@@treyshaffer You are ignorant to a maximum . Random institution? Man's was a Harvard Professor. He was only defensive because he had to be to break down her accusations and fully explain his viewpoints. She made plentiful accusations that characterize JP in a dark light, and it was disingenuous. So he cleared up the grey cloud in the room. So I don't think we watched the same video, I think you stepped on your soap box and never actually listened to the whole hour and a half. To see this debate as if JP lost is just pure Cope.

@@XXPHYSCO113 Also, it's funny that being a Harvard professor is supposed to bolster his credibility, yet he simultaneously claims that all of our higher educational institutions are not credible, which is sorta a contradiction lol. And the woman he's talking to went to Oxford, so it's not like she's lacking in academic pedigree
@XXPHYSCO1132 жыл бұрын
@@treyshaffer my bad on the institutions part I skimmed over it first read and was also a bit high, but the whole debate she constantly misquotes and mischaracterizes his words and things he's said in the past and even things said during the interview. The first hour i'd say was very obvious she was on the offensive, but then you see JP defending his character as steering away from the direct questions because you didn't like his answers. Now about your second comment, it's not really about bolstering his credibility in a "look at him he went to harvard so he must be smart" but rather he TAUGHT at harvard. Not just went to, but was employed by harvard, to teach the adult youth. Which gives his statements about our higher educational institutions a bit more validity cause he was apart of the system and was even villainized by it. Now I don't really care where she went to college because comparing a student vs teacher is just a silly counterpoint, no offense to her because she is a smart woman. But just being smart doesn't mean you are automatically right about everything. Same way being a professor doesn't make you 100% right 100% of the time. You need to analyze everything and try to concur a reasonable and logical conclusion based on your own life experiences. It seems you are not listening to what JP is saying but rather are only hearing how he says those things. It seems disingenuous from your part to not really listen to his arguments but rather paint him as some debate bully.

As I'm sure we've all seen dozens of poorly-informed incels and other people within the alt-right sphere worshiping Peterson for "owning" feminists and other left-leaning ideologues, the question of whether or not he took any responsibility wasn't a reach at all. She is smart but my boy’s wicked smart! Jordan knows his fields of study endlessly and it shows. It also shows that he has chosen his words so carefully in his writing and interviews and after such rigorous though before arriving on that view that he can instantly pick up when his ideas have been misconstrued or shall we say creatively paraphrased to suit an opponent’s argument. And he can pick out his sources in an instant. It’s totally consistent with his own rules. So he practices what he preaches. It’s quite something to witness.

Taxtro it takes more faith to believe there is no God than to believe in one. Watch Tim Keller’s talk on google for reason for God. Many are indoctrinated to believe religion is just blind faith, there are several reasons for belief on both ends for or against God including very compelling arguments and reason. True faith is when you question your own biases and assumptions rather than just being brought up in a certain mindset and never truly questioning your belief. I say this even to those “unconverted Christians” who claim they saw the truth and turned away from religion.
@leannemo73825 жыл бұрын
@@Raz0rIG >> Not so. Scientifically and logically, people cannot prove a negative; the burden of proof falls upon those who make a positive claim about a belief or proposition. Nothing itself is equal to negative and null/value zero; one cannot provide evidence for nothing/negative/null. Only an absence can be proved, after its existence is established. When a person places faith in a God(s), regardless of religiosity or denomination, they choose to believe so without the burden of proof being met. *That is the point of faith.* You suggest that atheists have more faith than believers; it seems you're confusing the confidence found in *both* certainty and faith. When you state "true faith is when you question your own biases and assumptions”, you’re labeling faith as "true" which implies there is faith that's "not true" or "false", which hardly makes sense. For example, a woman is either pregnant or not; there is no "true pregnant" because there is no untrue or false pregnancy. Similarly, a person has faith (in something/someone) or they do not. Perhaps by relabeling "blind faith" as "true faith", Mr. Keller and you mean to express a "devoted" or "unwavering" faith in God, which makes more sense while also losing the negative connotation of “blind”. But when we personally "question [our] own biases and assumptions" we are simply engaged in self-reflection and self-discovery - an important part of maturity that’s been documented since humankind's earliest written records. If it matters: I believe in God as a sort of hybrid Agnostic-Deist, allowing faith based on personal experience and a bit of logic. The agnostic in me believes that God is currently, scientifically unknowable. The deist in me believes if God exists, there's limited-to-no direct interaction or intervention with humankind, which may explain suffering and various evils...yet there seems to be apparent free will, or at least the illusion of it. Perhaps we're in a simulation after all. :) Cheers!

These can be really helpful to put in to practice although it will be uncomfortable and awkward at first (everything worth doing is, in my experience). One pitfall: when you do have a discussion with someone, don't be so focused on what you have rehearsed that you don't listen to what they are saying. (See Rule 9 in Dr. Peterson's book).
