One of the most valuable skills a BA gives you is the ability to articulate in writing or in speech a precise and well-researched argument. Knowing facts about a humanities discipline is the bare minimum. I would expect JP to know this. When I did my BA at U of T I never saw a multiple choice test in any class. This is laughable.

He's literally reinventing eLearning systems on the fly, seemingly oblivious to the fact that those already exist (the whole automated randomised test thing is _very common_ in university eLearning systems), and then slapping the completely nonsensical "but AI would make it objective" and "then put the diploma on a blockchain" on the end. Because you know, in Peterson's universe, using an AI is the most objective way to find the truth and the really big problem was storing and accessing people's accreditations. Also when someone inevitably breaches that system and inserts their own accreditation into the blockchain circumventing his tests... not much he can do about it. That accreditation is there forever now.

That's the whole point of block chain. Once you get so many blocks deep, it's very very difficult to change any later blocks. Because each block has a link to a prior block, and you would need to recalculate the blocks and the links. Not that it CAN'T be done. It would just be very expensive. Which might be perfect for the billionaire class. They could purchase any degree on the block chain they wanted.

I am a history instructor in college, and I just changed all my classes from the traditional quiz/test/research paper model to a completely new model where I only ask for various types of written responses. I think the two most important benefits of these changes is 1) it has curtailed cheating almost entirely (I don't care how many questions you have, if it's multiple choice people will cheat), and 2) I would say my students used to maybe learn a few things with the old model, now they are basically forced to learn the content to pass the class. Traditional ways of assessing knowledge, aptitude, and critical thinking are terrible and need to be completely done away with, not doubled down on.

JP's idea falls apart when you consider that standardized tests do not adequately measure students' intellect or merit. It quantifies what they've been able to memorize and how well they can take tests.

Yup. I sucked at taking tests, my ADD would go into overdrive and I would get lost inside my own thoughts. I had one teacher who noticed something was off because my test scores were to low for the knowledge they knew I possessed. If it wasn’t for that one teacher, I would probably be working at a fast food joint. The best way to show how useless standardized tests are, would be to have everyone take it, knowing the test was coming. Then give them the same exact test months later without letting the students know it was coming. The majority of the students would fail because they only did well the first time because the crammed all the info into their short term memory and the majority of the info they memorized would have been lost. Hell, just ask your Primary Care Physician a question from an Organic Chemistry exam or Micro-biology. They would answer incorrectly the majority of time.

So what else?? How else do these colleges give grades??
@adorabell4253
@adorabell4253 Жыл бұрын
@@mr.greengold8236 class participation. essays, assignments, presentations, etc. You know, all those things that you need to do to show and engage in learning. We know it's a better system but it's also much more labour intensive so instead we give standardized multiple choice tests that can be read by a scantron and call it a day. Or, well, US schools do. I never had those in Canada, not in the humanities. My uni acceptance was based off my overall average and my course grades were based on a wide variety of things including participation in tutorials or class, presentations, essays, and even group assignments.
@mr.greengold8236
@mr.greengold8236 Жыл бұрын
@@adorabell4253 First off, all those can be evaluated by AI. Also if only you knew how horrible essays and assignments are judged and evaluated you wouldn't use that as a marker for intelligence. Teachers, a good number of them, simply scan through huge essays and give grades by guessing, there is no objective mechanism through which they give marks. So all that is of little use except for language development skillsz where AI can help.

I went to ITT Tech, they got big off a campaign where they went around to graduates who actually did do well and interviewed them to make ads that did suggest that attending ITT led to better prospects. Although statistically it really did not. This was a big part of the eventual predatory lending litigation brought against them. At this point all of my loans have been 100% discharged. Fortunately I figured out it was a scam before I graduated -- when I applied to a job in the field I was studying and the interviewer asked me why I didn't go to a "real school" -- and never paid a cent.

While attending I was accused of plagiarism on 3 occasions. My questions are; how many course graduates had to deal with erroneous accusations of plagiarism, also how many people just quit instead of fighting accusations of plagiarism against them, and if you are pushed out through a plagiarism accusation how does that effect student loan debt?
