@A loud Italian Unless they sees you, look them in the eye, otherwise they think they got you under control, because they weren't caught. People don't give a shit, because they don't know how to fight and what for, there's need for knowledge to overcome predators who knows all the mechanisms of behaviours, so that's why they pretend they don't, but they do, at least to the degree that they're gonna stay alive

This always catches me off guard. The point here is that we never know how others see/perceive us based on all kinds of reasons.... @Mini Cooper that's good, but I think ineffective, advice. Because, it's incredibly painful to be alone. Disregard for what society thinks might not even be the problem. Confronting predators (work place ones), selective ones on the street/bar, helps big time down the road in life and strengthens one beyond their imagination. If focusing on all the negative encounters with other people out there, will but someone in a negative mind set with a positive feedback loop. Focusing on what have “I” achieved from those experiences is more rewarding and the idea that everyone has their own strengths/weaknesses, will also create strength in the jungle out there...

A friend of mine is having trouble getting out of his comfort zone when it comes to approaching girls and starting conversation. He has told me that he is worried that no girl would ever want him due to his lack of “suave.” It’s really sad to see, since he is one of the nicest people I know and I have yet to meet someone who dislikes him. I have given up trying to help him, as he sees it more as an act of charity than one of kindness. Guess it is up to him to venture out into the unknown, but JP is right when he says that the best way to get over the fear of rejection is just to put yourself out there.

Once I learned about professor Peterson, I immediately became attached to his way of speaking and in fact teaching which I never thought any teacher would ever make me say. Since listening to him speak about the psychology behind facing fears head on in numerous talks, I have implemented this idea into my own life in areas like deep rescue exercises for my old job as a lifeguard and recent job interviews I have gone through since completing my education at sixth form. It really is one of the most important attributes to hold, and I struggle quite bad with a hyperactive mind and anxiety (I smoke weed to counteract my mental hyperactivity because it’s not good for me) so I am by no means bragging confidence. Because I soil my briefs when I have to face something that matters but I have developed the ability to ignore that and get the job done. I had to force myself to the bottom of a diving pool to rescue a dummy every month for staff training, that messed with me to the extent where I lost sleep and I still, when it came to it, just did it and got the job done without failure on any occasion. Peterson is brilliant and everyone should pay a lot of attention to his words.

I wish I watched this before my weld test. Part of me wanted the job so I can build up my confidence and funds and help my parents with bills, a part of me hated the idea of getting tied down to the same place that I am trying to get away from, and a part of me is just like, "Eh. Whatever. Just wing it and leave it up to fate." I kind of winged the first three open-butts, but man did I pour all of my concentration into trying to get that last one perfect. Like, right speed, straight bead, gun straight on the metal. Because in that moment, I fully believed that I want and need that job. Now if only I had that mentality from when I walked in to when I walked out.

In my younger days when I went on a job interview at 100% and didn't get the job, it was way too hard to handle the disappointment. For weeks sometimes for months. As time passed by I learned to be much pickier and explore about the employer (if I can at first hand from an employee) BEFORE I even write my CV! I would go to the interview but this time at 60%, with much more confidence and much more resereved behaviour than my younger days. With this behavior I would get that job, (I actually got several jobs). I would even negotiate higer pay than first mentioned! Seems like employers appreciate you more and eager to hire you when they KNOW other employers are VERY interested in having you too! Hope this helps to all young people seeking jobs :)

We are social animals, dominance hiearchy has been here for millions of years, it's quite unimpressive for you to unsee the evidence brought up by science and confirmed by research. "comfort of fitting in the dominance hierarchy" sounds like it's from a person who has lost his chance to climb it at the time and is now throwing mud at it. If the greatest gift is to see ourselves as others see us then what is the value of self-awareness? Besides, most people don't want to know, they want to judge. And their judgments are often uninformed, biased, distored and unkind. Why should we care what they think of us? The greatest gift is to see yourself as you are, good and bad. @Fear_the_Nog
@Fear_the_Nog 6 жыл бұрын
Paul Rothwell "If the greatest gift is to see ourselves as others see us then what is the value of self-awareness?" I'm not sure what you mean by that, being able to see ourselves via another's perspective IS fundamentally a part of a developed self awareness. "Besides, most people don't want to know, they want to judge. And their judgments are often uninformed, biased, distored and unkind."' No, it's not any more often than the opposite. we tend to queue out the positive things and remember the things that hurt. "Why should we care what they think of us?" To better understand what effects, if any, our own selves have on other people and because what others think of us have a direct consequence on ourselves and our own welbeing or lack thereof, since interaction is unavoidable. It's only logical to obtain information about that. "The greatest gift is to see yourself as you are, good and bad." The false assumption you made is that other people don't help in that endeavor. Your "good and bad" are affiliated with societal distribution of averages and culture, which involve other people. Your "'self" is not fundamentally divorced from the rest of humanity, what you are is influenced by the ideas and thoughts of other people (just being able to speak English is a thought germ you caught from other people). "Change what you can, accept what you can't, and value it all. " Other people can help you in understanding what you need to change about you. If you're insensitive and callus for example, you might not know to what extent you are, until someone has the good sense to give you a piece of their mind. Start a dialog with them and see if you can negotiate some change or not. THAT's the point Peterson is making

I absolutely agree with you. We are not just another species of animal. We are the only animal with consciousness and free will on the planet. Our evolutionary ancestors commit rape, fight each other for power, have sex with anyone they like, and they don't have any justice or scene of morality. We also have these nature embodied in us. But the purpose of education and wisdom is to overcome and take control of our impulses. If you cant be confident or brave because of your status or wealth and dominate the people who are below you, then you are still like other animals not fully human. I'm not denying the fact that by nature we seek security in our possessions but we have to get past this. A truly human being doesn't consider himself above or below others.

"It's not until you've lost everything, that you're free to do anything." - Tyler Durden After that, once you're free to do anything, what would you do? Don't want to be consumed by infinite possibility either and end up doing nothing; spread too thin. Even in complete freedom our options are limited. This isn't complete freedom in a malevolent sense; consequences always apply and nothing will undo this. How it gives you complete freedom in what it removes, is the fear of what you have to lose as you've already lost it (reputation; giving a fuck what people think)

What if you are the anomaly? What if the main problem is that no matter how hard you try to make yourself understood, people are frightened and confused about you? They find you completely unpredictable and impossible to categorize. There is the story of a hunter who happened across a goddess bathing naked one night. She sent her pack of dogs after him, and he ran, pursued by the dogs. Some scholar theorized that the dogs represented his thoughts running around in his head. People who think so much about how to manipulate a situation, or worrying too much about their status and the status of others, are like the hunter running madly through the woods pursued through the dogs. You could simply choose to be comfortable with chaos and play with the dogs. I never know my own status, but it does baffle me a little to see people making so much effort to try to figure it out, when I can't figure it out and I long ago gave up and dismissed it as mysterious and irrelevant. It is like when I come upon a group of people in the woods. Men or women, they generally behave the same. I was climbing a bluff once when I heard a bunch of young women yodling across the valley. As I approached I joked a little when I asked them if they were cultivating their inner wild woman, and running with the wolves. They mostly regarded me with hostility as they shuffled away from me. One woman had a friendly and generous response, so I stood and talked with her for awhile, while the others whispered amongst themselves and cast hostile glares at me. I went my way before long because my presence was too disturbing to them. Men are the same. I happened upon a hunting party one day of about a dozen men, and they all shuffled off when I approached, but one was friendly so I talked with him for awhile. But the rest stood off at a distance, whispering amongst themselves and castimg hostile glances at me. I moved on because it was clear that I was disturbing them too much. It's always something like that in any social situation. I observe an atmosphere of growing paranoia and hostility. I have been told by people that they can't figure me out. I wonder why people are so obsessive about trying to figure me out. I don't bother trying to figure anyone else out. I simply relate to them one moment at a time, and one day at a time. I suppose I incidentally figure them out, because their behavior becomes predictable and kind of boring, but I wish they would be far less predictable. It seems like nobody is as full of surprises as I wish they were, and I imagine it is because they are overthinking how manipulate people and situations like the people Peterson describes here. They don't enjoy or appreciate chaos. They aren't as keen to find a naked goddess in the wilderness and play with her dogs.

Timothy Kuring this was enjoyable to read and I think I learnt something too lol I try to make sense of things a fair bit tbh,its a strong impulse that I have tried to squash but that in itself was harmful lol instead I picked up a practice that lets me "manage" my thoughts and yield to unpredictability and another to channel that tendency of mine in a productive way. Too much order sends me mad at the same time lmao and I yearn for choas again, in some unknown...then try to make sense of it and "tame" it 😂 sorta like a catch and release game maybe, or a preference for my choas to be coated in order like a chocolate centered Tootsie pop XD but I figure there needs to be a certain amt of comfort in both order and choas, for example in a long term relationship, there is gonna be routine and a certain amt of predicability as you get to know the person. Some stability as well...but you'd both need some sort of choas in the mix...could be small things too and it doesn't have to be couple acticities either. I think based on your comment,the majority of people were uncomfy with you cause you represent a choas that defies their order( how people speak or dress or act eg the comment to the ladies lol I would make that kind of comment naturally as well but most ppl wouldnt and find it stranfe and label you weird or some sort of potential tribal danger on instinct ahaah)

Shivon Spicer Yeah, I think we were all masters at handling chaos (relatively speaking) at one time. Jesus said we had to become as children to enter the kingdom of heaven. My mother, and most people, said that was a matter of simple faith. In a way, I suppose it is, but what does that mean? I remembered regarding everyone with a sort of open expectancy. I had no prejudices about them from their appearance or status, and I had no expectations of what they would say or do, or whether they would be amusing or strange, or whatever. But the world added it's accumulations of judgements and expectations: "don't talk to that person," "be respectful of that person, " etc. For reasons of my own, I chose to disregard the claims and judgements of the world. Mostly because it was always making false claims and judgements of me. I often found good humor and spiritual riches in the people everyone else avoided or overlooked. I seldom found anything interesting, humorous, or enlightening in the people everyone admired and spoke well of. Children aren't wise enough to deal skillfully with people but they do deal pretty well with surprises and the unknown, because everything is surprising and unknown to them. You can find babies playing with wild animals and rattlesnakes without being harmed because they don't know enough to be afraid. They deal openly with what is in front of them and, unless they are maddened with pain or something, animals also deal openly with what is in front of them. What we have been conditioned to think of as chaotic and threatening is really natural order. There is a Zen story of a man who reacts with fear when he sees a rope and takes it for a snake. The story isn't just about how we overreact to illusions, but how our overreaction is also our response to actual snakes. Even when they are real, they aren't always dangerous, and even when they are dangerous, they aren't always threatening. But we overreact before we even know what is real and what is really going on. In their ignorance, children are less reactive and more observant and intelligent. When a person is trying to anticipate everything and work out the fine details of status, and how to manipulate or impress someone, as in a job interview, they are being like the opposite of the open minded child. They can even come across as nervous and afraid like the huntsman running through the woods at night, lursued by all his fearful thoughts and imaginations like a pack of baying dogs. I have managed to escape thinking like that most of my life, but only by thinking it over a lot. I can fall into the common way of thinking and behave much like everyone else when I'm not paying attention, or when I'm too busy thinking of something else and I'm caught in an unexpected situation by surprise - every situation in our society seems to have its model of cliched outcomes and rules, which is reinforced a million times by television, movies, and real time repetitions. You have to think and concentrate to do something different. Whereas, when you were a kid, you invented your own way of responding to things on the fly.

Shivon Spicer I doubt I could tell anyone how to find balance because it is very much an individual thing, dependent upon your circumstances and your proclivities. I was a social outcast at a very young age, so I was limited regarding the roles I could play. I admired things like the anti-status humor of the Marx Brothers, the Munsters, Tom Sawyer, Brer Rabbit, and Monty Python. I also admired the ways of old hermits like the character of Mose on The Searchers, the old prospector in Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Chance the Gardener in Being There, the old lady in the original Lady Killers, Obi Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars, Gandalf, etc. I also liked almost all the old people I knew better than most people my own age. I sensed and loved their wisdom and their usually calm mastery of all things. I sort of absorbed a detached and playful attitude about all things. Some people are amazed by my calm attitude, especially in emergencies, but most people think I'm not serious enough, especially about things they want me to be serious about. Most people think I'm impossible to figure out and/or dangerously unpredictable. People in organizations like the military and corporations were always referring to me as a loose cannon. I scared them, and they wanted to keep me out of the loop. It worked for me, but it might not work for most people.

Adrian Stubbs I'm sure you're probably right. I get along well with just about everyone in a person to person basis, but I cause a lot of trouble in groups. I notice people changing their personality a great deal in groups. My usual response in a group dynamic is to get bored or impatient with it and go away. As to people who are suffering in the dominance hierarchy. I don't know them. I don't know if I've ever met one. They don't confide in me. I suppose most of the people In got along with in school, for instance, we're either at the top of some sort of dominance hierarchy, jocks, burn outs, geeks, criminals, or they weren't socially affiliated with anyone. I suppose what appealed to me about them was that they were more fully developed individuals, and they didn't play the games that most other people used. For instance, my outlaw friend and I got along pretty well, though I had no interest in outlaw activity. His friends would practice peer pressure, which I hated and wouldn't tolerate. " Be a man, take a cigarette." I would refuse and they would keep pressing me until I had to laugh at them and call them clowns. But their leader was alright. He never used peer pressure, and when Israel refused a smoke, he was fine with it and he never mentioned it again. But while we were fast friends alone, I didn't like hanging around with his gang. They would just glare at me, and it always looked like they were looking for an opportunity to put a knife in my back. It is another example of how I got along best with individuals, but never well with groups. I couldn't do whatever they required of me to put them at ease. But I like being a loner.

If you chastise a dog for the behavior it shows naturally (tail wagging when you get home, etc) all you get is a subdued, and probably less-happy, dog. The dog does not improve if your friend says "I don't like the tail-wagging" and is allowed to correct your dog for doing it. "Seeing yourself as others see you" cannot do much, because at any given time, we are taking the RIGHT ADVICE, which is old advice, and is GOOD advice: JUST BE YOURSELF. "Seeing yourself as others see you" is fine if you're wearing shabby clothes - you can change your clothes. But beyond easy-to-change things like clothes, you can't change your physical appearance, or a lot of other things, very easily. If at all. "I see a short, fat, bald, physically repulsive person" or "I see a lady with a limp" or "I see a low-IQ person" or "I see an acne-scarred person" or "I see a clumsy, poorly-socialized person" Those don't help. So "seeing yourself as others see you" in some cases - no, you do not want to hear _THEIR PERCEPTIONS_ which are just their opinions. One of the reasons some actors never watch their own performance is to reduce self-consciousness that will arise the next time they're acting out a scene. JUST BE YOURSELF and don't worry if others don't accept you for yourself. YOU *HAVE* TO accept yourself - you're all you've got. . .

JP has some very good info, and some really bad advice as well. One example is his fixation with relative position on a social hierarchy. There "may" be a study or 2 that show a correlation between social status and happiness, but there are far more studies that prove real, sustainable personal happiness is achieved via other pursuits, such as meditation and good diet. People who blindly follow others never realize their full potential in terms of happiness, and JP's narrative here is one reason why.

Nah.. the idea as he is proposing it is far more general than just social hierarchy. It is how you (instinctively) perceive you position in regards to hierarchy, health, security, being who you want to be, moving toward your goals, etc. in other words.. your (mostly) unconscious feeling of how well you are doing in the aggregate.

Meaning is responsibilty. For example, what was the meaning of Jesus' life? Dying for our sins, because other than that there wasn't anything special. Sure, the miracles, but god himself was already able to do those. Jesus had to take the responsibilty for humanity and its sins, because that was one of the, if not the most competent thing Jesus was able to do. Meaning derives from what the goal is you set yourself to do in this life. What that is, is up to you to decide.

Although I agree with Peterson on most points, he will often interpret an event in a way that makes his own position more comfortable -- a professor who prefers to spend his time doing research rather than teaching will have to decide what to do with the negative energy offset by the latter experience [the 'unknown factors' he speaks of -- change in student taste or interest, unexpected questions, etc.]. He can revert the quality of the energy by convincing himself that it is in his best interest to invest in the outlet (the '100 percent rule' he referenced). This paradigm shift will result in some amount of the former negative energy converting into positive energy. If you are restricted to that toil which you so despise, this is the only way to lighten it (other than passive forms; i.e. fantasizing about better circumstances). Although it is preferable to the alternative ("psychotic behavior") when doomed to a life of frail mediocrity, it does not find resonance with the talented, yet anti-social individual -- for, his views carry a particular value for the rest, in spite of their divergence. What he seems to be describing is a positive way of viewing a slave-mentality which those with "jobs, not careers" can benefit from. It makes their position more tolerable; this includes his own.

its really hard to admit that a mentor might be wrong tbh, just like a parent. there is something within us that fights the notion savagely...maybe ppl see the mentor as a future version of themselves and don't want to destroy thier guiding ideal. I've experienced it too and have had to admit, that the mentor, like myself, is a human and flawed. it takes practice and willingness to juggle or balance an ideal and a reality.

The Crow and the Sheep A troublesome crow seated herself on the back of a sheep. The sheep, much against his will, carried her backward and forward for a long time and at last said: "If you had treated a dog in this way, you would have had your deserts from his sharp teeth." To this the crow replied; "I despise the weak and yield to the strong. I know whom I may bully and whom I must flatter, and thus I hope to prolong my life to a good old age."

Good luck with that brah. Not such a gift either. How ppl see you obviously greatly affects how you see yourself. How other ppl see you is arguably more accurately you then how you see yourself. Ppl see themselves as all kind of things, when they are not.

If you absolutely can't quit, try an alternative. Regular cigarettes is a shit way to absorb nicotine to begin with, and isn't that the whole point of smoking? Personally, I prefer Snus and my electrical cigarette.

time does not "flow past us" we move linearly through time. Aside from that, excellent
@DubTurd
@DubTurd 6 жыл бұрын
Tony Draws from a physics standpoint you are right. But maybe I can make ‘time flows past us’ a bit more clear to you. An example that’s probably familiar to you: you do something in the present, and you think yes this is great, what I’m doing right now is good. In addition, you rationalize some reason for the why of why you are doing that action in the present, in which you are still progressing along with time. But say that two weeks later you reflect on that thing you did in the ‘present’ and you seem to have established a much more logical, causal explanation of the why behind that action. You now seem to have expained your past action properly and kind of ‘check it off’ as the correct explanation, in contrast to the initial rationalization. So what has happened in a figurative way is that as you progressed through time after your first explanation of the action, you went through time in which the ‘proper’ explanation basically already existed, which you would find out two weeks later. So when looking at it that way time flows past you (if you look at time as the ‘truth containing’ medium which is ahead of us, that’s why you find out later). Lol this probably doesn’t make any sense since I define time here as something that it simply isn’t, but I figured it was still a though worth sharing :) Also I don’t know if this is what Jp meant by saying it. Cheers m8
