I just put up my own review of the book (as a 50 minute livestream) today, and you guys would get a kick out of watching it, if you had the time. One thing we agree on: Jordan Peterson's endorsement of the book will be _utterly baffling_ to his fans: Peterson may be unaware of the extent to which Stendhal's political philosophy is incompatible with his own.

You two have a unique style of critique. Just to let you know, I read it for the same reasons. I would have just done what Jeremy did for this one if I knew what I was getting into. I agree with you that this story isn't engaging most of the time, and I don't think it's too much to ask to have strong meaning AND a narrative that is immersive

I'm reading though Jordans list now. This one is one I keep picking up and putting right back down. I'm glad I'm not the only one that's struggling though this one. I just can't get into wartime stories I suppose.

Uh you don’t even know what year it took place. And then you don’t even know what year Napoleonic wars took place. Why do you make a video?

Let the man speak lol. You’re cute but he’s saying more with less words! I too decided to go through JPs reading list and I was at that point wondering why this book is on there and this video was my first stop. I had also thought he might choose it because it is funny. I appreciated the perspective that it shows how foolhardy it is to run with the heart. Beyond that I was noticing the theme of mostly women taking care of him and it was making me think this must be the anima, the feminine side in a man’s personality that spurs him on to try to succeed. I also noted that the aunt was being the devouring mother who protects you so much that you are rendered incapable of taking care of your own battles. I imagine many of the characters hold such meaning but it is just slightly out of reach for me. I hope reading his other books like ones by Jung will give me more insight! Good luck getting through the list!
