Winston speaks with best-selling author, clinical psychologist and leading public intellectual Dr Jordan Peterson. They discuss the role of artists in society and the state of the arts today. What is so original about Dr Peterson’s work? How hopeful is he for universities? Is it the duty of the privileged to serve the oppressed? And, among other things… Ronaldo, the Book of Revelation, the New Atheists, the Queen’s personality traits and how the energy crisis will end in apocalypse.

Jordan is the closest adult leader that I have seen in a long time that I perceive to understand what it means to be a Good Shepherd. I don't care what his critics say, Everything he says and does is for the protection of those who are broken and left without a voice. God Speed Jordan. There are many false prophets in our day but you are a light in the darkness. May God heal your soul.

Jordan is by far my favorite commentator on the important things challenging society these days. He articulates many of the things most of us suspect is true but don't always have the words for. He also has a way of including those he disagrees with in thoughtful conversation that is extremely rare in modern discourse. All power to him and I hope we all as individuals take on board his core ideas regarding the power of individual responsibility. As he says "we don't know the limits of that". In the people I know who embody that principle, whether they learned it through him or discovered the truth of it themselves, it most certainly has far reaching positive consequences well beyond the person making the stand. Fantastic!

Totally agree, it’s nice to hear your curiosity & open mindedness overcame the opinions of others, that’s rare & evolved in today’s platforms. When I first exposed myself to Peterson & found some incredible speeches & at the time he wasn’t doing anything because he was on his death bed recovering from addiction to a prescription drug, I don’t know the details but based on updates from his daughter he really struggled. There’s some times when he’s getting deep & his voice gets shaky & he’s becoming overwhelmed with emotion, it makes my eyes well up, raw emotion is rare these days unless it’s from anger. Cheers

I remember Peterson saying that years ago in a lecture on The Lion King. He loves the Lion king because its archetypical, and he was comparing it to Frozen which he deems a work of pure propaganda (one of the first Disney films to "lecture" the audience rather than entertain...the very definition of propaganda.). It blew me away. It seems obvious but I never seen it. The only time I put pen to paper is when I'm trying to figure something out...something I don't know.

Thank you Mr Peterson! As someone who found God again in a time of crisis it’s interesting to learn the parallel of the Abraham story and God spirit leading to the adventure of your life. Mr. Peterson is so valuable. I’m blessed to hear him 😊 We are literally watching this man figure out the meaning of life and helping us along the way! Hallelujah! You cannot figure out a meaning of life, because there is no singular life, but countless unique lives, each demanding new and unique meaning to be created. You also cannot ask life what is its meaning. Life is asking you that very same question and it is up to you to answer it. Not the other way around. The meaning of life is not searched, it is your answer to life. Read some Viktor Frankl

Good to see him back in form! At one point, I had thought he was not going to be his old self ever. But now, I'm so glad to see him back and I know some of the things he is talking about. For example, the story of all those who let the privilege of having a Coca Cola after the 1 hr. 33 min. mark (or even having refrigerated water). In the sixties, in Kolkata, our school brought a Coca Cola truck every year to give us a bottle of soft drinks. For the rest of the year, I didn't have a second one and so didn't most of my friends. In the first seventeen years of my life, I must have had less than 15 bottles of soft drinks. But we had the kindest teachers who also had very little.

Then when you became an adult you realised that cola was merely marketing (and sugar water and caffeine and burnt aluminium caramel flavouring and carbon dioxide) and also that the sources of happiness you effortlessly derived as a child were devalued by this very marketing that needed you to crave the exotic and develop creeping anhedonia, and only notice monetary value. I never had coke as a kid, no loss, sometimes my shoes were too small and l knew that there was no budget for new shoes, now l look down at my crowded toes, and am mindful that there are some places where there are siblings who share a pair of shoes, no shoes that day, no schooling, and there are other children that step on mines - that were lain before they were even born .... I guess that's the difference between artificial value and artificial scarcity, and what actually matters.

(To: Surajit Goswami) 9-30-2022 - - - Be advised that Coca Cola's objective as a corporation is to get you to think that the toxic stuff you call Coca Cola is good - a reward for something. It is full of sugar and carbon dioxide. If you like it you buy it and they make money which is their objective. I suggest you never drink another ounce of any soft drink, ever. By the way, tobacco pushers have the same objective: to turn you into an income stream, until what they tempt you into buying eventually kills you; and if their plan works, you also recruit actively or passively your acquaintances, your friends, your family or anyone else in your sphere of influence - to drink that wonderful tasting poison and smoke those cigarettes you think make you look cool and serious. If you're going to addict yourself to anything, addict yourself to creating more order, harmony and beauty in the Universe. Cheers.

Great to hear. I didn’t think open minded liberals existed. Lol (that’s a joke btw) but seriously it’s nice to know. I lean to being conservative most the time, but I never say I won’t hear another person just based on others opinions. I own my mind, and like listening to others opinions and beliefs. Then I either disagree or look up more information because they made me think of something in a different way. Isn’t that how we evolve and learn more? I say yes, and some would say or do say I have to pick a side. I wholeheartedly disagree, and will continue to live life my way. I respect everyone’s right to believe what they want. The demonizing comes from the Left, particularly the radical Left who see Jordan Peterson as extreme Right which he is not. They are exhibiting the practices that Herbert Marcuse describes explicitly in his 1965 influential essay, Repressive Tolerance. The essay details how the actions of the Right should not be tolerated at all and how the reactions of the Left to the actions of the Right must always be tolerated no matter how destructive or violent these reactions from the Left may be.

As an artist whose faith is Christian, I've observed a similar utilitarianism in only judging art or music if it directly references a particular Christian theme or doctrine. In music we call it "dropping the J-bomb." Franky Schaeffer wrote a great book about this called Addicted To Mediocrity. Artists should just be allowed to make art. If they are Christian, those sensibilities will filter through and be communicated in their artwork. But a landscape painting should be able to stand on its own and glorify God the Creator without painting the face of Jesus into the clouds. Quincy Jones once said in an interview, "Don't write a song to be a hit because God will leave the room. God is in the music."

I recommend everyone watch this TV show The Leftovers. I think it's the type of creative work Peterson is talking about where you don't know the "whys" behind it, and it's slowly revealed to you throughout your life. I've watched it twice and some months back I used the show as an example to argue for/against something and that example came to me in that moment of argument out of nowhere. It was a really deep analysis and now I've completely forgotten what it was. Plus, this show is super entertaining as well.

If you listen, read, and THEN write your thoughts down consistently you can also become incredibly articulate. It's forcing yourself to write down your arguments in your head that brings out the articulation. You do that enough and you can become close to his level on a few subjects. What Peterson does so miraculously is merge many subjects together with a very deep understanding which takes years and years of the aforementioned process.

How many times Ive been asked to just tell a revelation. Tell us what it was or write it down. Ahhhhhhhgggh. Some things cannot be easily intellectualised. Crossing from mind to spirit. Are beyond explanation You are a master on this verbally drawing those pictures for many and explaining rather than intellectualising their meanings - is awesome to me. Thanxx for the inspiration.

Bravo Jordan Peterson for saying that the creative act is one of discovery. 15 years ago I was irritated by the question as to why I had created my portfolio pieces for a foundation art course. I was always annoyed, even as a child, by being asked 'What are you drawing/painting/making?' It was impossible to answer this question when the creative doing was the act of discovery and the meaning is always unclear or obscure - and I did not feel that justifying myself was anything at all to do with the created item. I felt like the foundation art course was essentially focused on the propaganda that one was supposed to express (as relevant to some collective ideal or some such thing). I inherently mistrust artists who feel the need to spend a lot of time explaining their work.

Interesting you write that. I too still feel, that annoyance, thought it was something wrong with me that I couldn't explain what I was creating and why.

Interesting comment and enjoyed heading JBP explain this. I have no creativity. Well almost none. I took his personality quiz that he sells for $10 and my creativity was scored at 10%. Yikes! It was my lowest scored personality trait so I'm strangely interested in people who are highly creative because they're so different than myself. BTW, highly recommend Peterson's personality quiz for individuals and especially married couples.
