Dr Jordan B Peterson discusses the unseen price successful people pay. How painful is it to become successful? Is the price of success worth it? How does Tiger Woods teach us a story about hyper-specialisation? Are super-driven people happy? What is the issue Jordan Peterson sees with conscientious individuals when they don’t have a project? What does Jordan think causes depression amongst the successful in 2021?

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Instead of trying to predict and prognosticate the stability of the market and precisely when the change is going to happen, a better strategy is simply having a portfolio that’s well prepared for any eventually, that’s how some folks' been averaging 150K every 7week these past 4months according to Bloomberg.

You have a very valid point, I started investing on my own and for a long time, the market was really ripping me off. I decided to hire a CFA, even though I was skeptical at first, and I beat the market by more than 9%. When I was 18, having been raised in a family that was consistently below the Canadian 'poverty line' (we still had so much more than most people in the world, so poverty doesn't seem like the right word here), I made a promise to myself that by the time I was 30 I would be making more than $100,000 net each year. I achieved that goal, at the expense of two relationships which I now realize were worth far more. Wealth can be an incredibly empty thing if you have no one to share it with. I don't know what the future will bring. But I do know Jordan is right when he says being young and poor is preferable to being old (which I am not yet!) and rich. Oddly enough, the time of life I had the most fun was when I was broke and starving as a student in university. No cares. No responsibilities. Nobody depended on me for anything. I guess I wouldn't go back to that time, but I do miss not having any real responsibilities and believing in the fantasy that if only I could hit a minimum income that would be truly worth achieving.

A life where you end up sacrificing meaningful relationships to work 80 hours per week to become rich sounds crazier and crazier to me with each passing day. From what I see, people work, and are generally expected to work, a dangerously unhealthy portion of their time. I recently procured a well-paid job that I don't hate - the first time in my life - and even still I wouldn't say I would want to do it forty hours per week. Work is important, but it shouldn't be the only thing in life. Family, hobbies, and self-reflective alone time are absolutely crucial.

Perhaps the biggest problem I see when it comes to conversations about "success" is the definition of the term. It's rarely parsed out. Generally it's assumed success is correlated with financial gain and/or influence. But what about psychological (spiritual, mental, emotional) success? This may involve overcoming those demons that have plagued you and/or your family, or breaking thru mental illness, or finding inner peace even when life gets rocky. What about social/relational success? This might involve the building of a wonderful marriage, or the cultivating of deep & meaningful friendships. What about physical success? This could involve overcoming illness and/or learning the tools to keep one's health at a high level. After all, Jesus said that a person's "LIFE" does not consist in the abundance of their possessions (Luke 12:15).

Maybe that's why Buddhist monks often encourage such a minimalist approach to many aspects of life. They're obviously onto something there. But the thing is, even when you finally end buying something you've wanted for a while, like a car, or a bike. They need fuel, parts, maintenance, general upkeep etc, which can often be quite stressful, or worrisome, especially if you're a person with a very busy lifestyle. What's the point of desiring such items then. And then you get many who base an illusion of happiness around that particular thing. They may say that "I can't live without it"... seriously? 🥴😅😂 Just turns into a vicious cycle of clinging onto materialism.

And I'm guessing you're in the States? from the money and health benefits thing you mentioned. I'm so glad the NHS in Britain isn't bloody privatised. It's so wrong that people have to pay for those little advancements when health is so important, especially now. Scum bags always want to profit off stuff like that though don't they.

I will pick old and satisfied with a life well-lived. Sort of the song "My Way". You try to take the least amount of pain and injustice and strive to do the most of the activity that makes you happy doing it. Only 20% of people love their jobs. I am one of them, but I had my share of injustice. I fought like hell to prevent them from keeping me down. And being old and still imaginative and enthusiastic is even better. I have more drive today (and resources) than when I was young and scared about my future. Today, I control my future. I will keep working on my projects till I die. I will leave my progeny and family the best legacy that I can give, education and human quality.

The same can be said for music. A young guitarist may desire to one day be as great as Jimi Hendrix. But what is the cost of being that great?

@@tonywright8294 Yep. Hendrix reached that 10k hours mark and then some, a long time ago. But what I've observed is most of these great artists are OCD as a result. They work hard, and they PLAY hard. They overindulge in vices (drugs, women, etc.) like they do with music. And that can be a great cost.

scientific research requires absolute dedication and commitment. we don't aim to be any celebrity or to "beat" anyone. curiosity drives the researcher. we aren't famous and we aren't precisely wealthy or powerful. when a researcher get a top management position his/her research suffers. by the way, women don't leave at there thirties, they are even more committed if such thing is possible because we are all imbalanced

The idea of becoming successful in the popular sense and ending up feeling miserable on the inside scares the hell out of me. That's been making me constantly ask myself what really matters to me at the end of the day. A balanced life really seems to be path which takes to the type of success I'm after.

In the pursuit of trying to accomplish something as big as my potential, I have lost almost everything _four_ times in the last _10 years_ . That means going from home to homeless, financially stable to $100,000 insolvent. And despite having done that four times by age 34, I still see no reason I shouldn't do it again. God knows I'll figure it out at some point. But if I do this over and over and over until I'm dead, I feel it's worth it.
