Relationships require constant maintenance. If you perform the maintenance you can be rewarded many times over. omg, I hadn't realized *that* was what he was talking about! My mind kind of glazed over a little at that part. T_T I'm creative. Parents were both practical. Wasn't encouraged much - or rather, wasn't encouraged in a realistic sense. I always thought I was never good enough and it all kind of ended with that. And *then* it became - you must be practical because I said so, tripe. Have had depression and anxiety for years. Just sad. I'm still creative though - I'll always be creative and for those that are creative, too, keep that alive. Even just a small ember has the chance to become a bigger flame later on.

Perhaps that's precisely the point. Or if it wasn't, then it's quite miraculous how it all works out: people may look to Amber Heard and perceive a "perfect woman", but the truth is so far removed from the perception that it boggles the mind. That is quite a key component to Peterson's words here, really, that no woman matches the ideal Anima the way we may anticipate or yearn for. Part of maturation in one's approach to romantic pursuits is to recognize that.

The ideal woman in my mind is rather practical, she is the one that can wear her Soul for me to see and not be afraid of judgement. She is also willing to bare witness to my Soul knowing that we both come from the same place. She is courageous and honest so that she never falls prey to the endless lies. I never realized how much it benefited me to grow up in a hunting family. As a little girl my dad would bow hunt whitetail deer & he would have me go with him to track them after he shot them. I learned to follow a blood trail & when we found the deer he would have me hold its legs as he field dressed the deer. I was never really perturbed by it because he was always very respectful of the deer he harvested & explained to me that this is where food comes from. In fact when I was so young I was fascinated by seeing its organs & muscle tissue. I would help him clean & butcher the deer, making it into steaks, burger, & roast, & package it for the winter. The deer fed our family all winter & even into the spring. I have very fond memories of those times I spent with my dad in the woods. But even I would have a hard time walking through a slaughter house. At least the deer my father would harvest got to live a natural life as a wild animal, & had the chance to avoid being killed if they were smart, & some did just that. The cows in the slaughter house live in small cages & never have the opportunity to get away from their captures. But I understand it is a reality of feeding an entire nation of people. I am in no way a vegetarian/vegan so the fact that animals have to die to feed us is not a perturbing thought. Just the environment of a slaughter house.

Love is not about finding a perfect partner. It's about knowing your partner well and knowing yourself, and being certain that you are able to handle and tolerate their poor or less desirable qualities. When things get rough you're not thinking about all the reasons that you fell in love with that individual, you're completely annoyed, pissed and focused on their flaws. If they are characteristics that you just fine revolting, relationship will never work. You have to love that person for all the good things, what makes them attractive, but more importantly You really love someone, you love them for their flaws and in spite of them.

Interestingly, surveyed palliative care doctors have the highest job satisfaction levels of any medical speciality. I guess because in every other branch of medicine, death is the worst possible outcome whereas it's the set conclusion in palliative care, so making the transition out of life as pain free as possible can probably give a kind of satisfaction that's unavailable in other branches and also the doctors have come to terms with patients dying regularly as part of their job. Just some thoughts.

I had a teacher/mentor in high school who took me to a funeral home because I’d never seen a dead person. The person in the coffin was a little lady painted with rosy cheeks, wearing pink. I was scared and wouldn’t get too close but I remember Mrs. Stein smiling kindly and saying “See? No big deal...” I’ll never forget.

Falling in love doesn't necessarily mean that you see a person as perfect. My hubs is far from and I never thought of him as such. I just love him because of how we connect mentally. Over ten years and our feelings haven't changed for each other. Is this REALLY that rare?

Human beings rarely want to put in the work to do so. It takes listening and a genuine interest in people to accomplish this. The majority of the species has neither of those traits.

lol, he isn't much of a talker, unless we are having an actual discussion about something mutually interesting to both of us. We have, since day one, been experts at the whole "alone together" thing, that I think I have heard Perterson talk about a few times. It comes natural to us, not something we have to create or force. We can be in the same room all day and say practically nothing to each other, then maybe suddenly a conversation will spark for whatever reason, or maybe not. No feelings about it. It is nice to be with someone and not have to endure them nor entertain them.

@April Thomas, you are lucky to have that. Growing up (I'm male not gay) I had a few guy friends like that. I thought it was natural so I assumed one day I'd have a life partner like that. All the women so far have been way too demanding to achieve that.

The ideal woman is a fantasy all men dream of, and for the other sex likewise in men. The reality is we're married from birth into an idealistic society fixing unrealistic ideals into us and in relationships they're more prevalent. The ideal dissolves but from that reciprocal respect can emerge and then, as Jordan says, a lot of talking. But talking formed from lifestyle pages or Influencers isn't genuine. It's paper thin because talk challenges. I doubt many couples actually have dialogues for fear of revealing true feelings and emotions which could drive them apart as the ideal breaks down irretrievably in their partner. The sad fact is that the unreality attracts and couples build on everything but their happiness. False ego driven lives with individualistic aims for self gratification built through using the other to proliferate that and, sad to say, many marry still lost in this delusion. Idealism can open doors to growing each other to the best they can be or destroy one to the benefit of the other who believes they're doing the other a favour by being with them. In Western advertising led societies idealism is a lifestyle aim. A fake one. But we buy into it without rationalising it logically.

Yeah im on borrowed time lol. I'll offer this with regard to death. REALLY knowing that you not only can and will go at any moment....sure makes a gourmet meal out of cheerios! Every moment is vibrant and intensely beautiful. No I'm not happy all the time but my general positivity in the face of what we consider horror (and/or mundane) is to a point I'd describe it as such, that i am indeed happy MOST of the time. Sadness overcomes at times but even that i taje a measure of joy in today because tomorrow i may never feel that, with all it's apparent flaws, that thing which is to be human. A silly phrase i conjured up at ten regarding the human condition. Perfectly imperfect, in a perfect way. Yeah, even cheerios arr for ME gourmet. Very nice lecture.

@Green _ Goddess She's beautiful no doubt. But I've learned that, no matter how gorgeous /hot/cute/beautiful someone is, the second your respect/interest drops for them.... none of that superficial beauty matters... they fade and you wont be attracted to them in a plethora of ways simply because of that psychological factor.

It’s interesting you said people who work in palliative care wards are “tough.” My mom had said my sister is tough. She is an MD that ran a pediatric palliative care wing. She explained to me she felt helpful to families and the children who were slowly dying during life and when transitioning to the afterlife.

Reminds me of watching an autopsy during police academy. There are some of us practical jokers who would see a fellow recruit starting to go green around the gills and ask him or her to pass us the ash tray ( the top of the deceased’s skull). Usually resulted in projectile vomiting or a dead faint. It sounds harsh but it’s not much compared to a lot of suicide, homicide or accidental death scenes we went to. Life sometimes ends horribly
