My problem is rather that my life is so much like a cage that I don't know where to start breaking out. And every time I think I found a good spot, I find myself incapable of breaking out unless I define the spot even more, replicating the same problem on a smaller level. Then when I finally find where to start, it turns out to be a dead end. My consciousness tells me to stop trying and wait for the climate to change. Everything else tells me that I need to find a way out before the climate changes because the change is an upcoming storm. Needless to say, I'm in quite the predicament.

We're at the high end of the Richter scale of depression, I understand that. What needs to be considered first though....What is the pay off that life gives you for the suffering you endure? Think hard, think back but don't think forward. You'll be out of breath before the 100 meter dash begins. We're fires that look to be without heat, we're not ablaze with ambition. We need to think differently about this puzzle. Think of what embers are keeping you from flipping the switch from all the pain. There must be a spark there somewhere that keeps you engaged with reality, no matter how small it may seem. You need to get angry, you need to know you deserve something in return for your hurt. Do you deserve it? Know you deserve it. The law of equivalent exchange. When something is given, something of equal value must be lost. So for all intents and purposes, the opposite must be true. We're just not given an obvious answer as to what we've gained. We need to make time for ourselves, stop punishing ourselves. As self serving and as egocentric as that may be, it's a good start. I remember one night I was in deep crisis and wasn't sure about our pay off of emotional devastation, so I took a bottle of wine and went to the park at 2 am when all is silent. Under a star lit sky I walked there, taking in the air, embracing the silence. I found a spot in the park and sat myself down and just observed the beauty 'beyond' this planet. Star gazing, feeling, smelling the cool night air and sipping my wine. And even though it was brief, I said to myself.."So this is why?". I felt liberated for the first time in 10 years of isolation. I hope you can all find a little moment in time for yourselves to validate your existence, before chasing an endless dream that few to no one achieve. Just thought I'd share a small but impactful experience that kept the embers of my fire from turning cold.

MemeSensei I'm at the point where I just don't care any more... if you gave me a million dollars in my hand and told me:"Have fun" I would be happy for 10 min and then fall in to my default mod aka "meh whatever". Their is laterally noting driving me forward. I'm not even sure what love is(never felt it) or true happiness. I think it can be safely said that as a general rule, if the problem is psychological, mindfulness meditation is always a good place to start if one isn't doing it already. Simply because it's a surefire method to detach from and observe the source of most of one's recurring problems: i.e. mental activity at it's many levels

I have been raising 3 of my own sons and around 45 foster BOYS over the years. All of them, the ones that society has labeled rotten, and useless. Explaining to them that investing in THEMSELVES while learning WHO they wanted to be has been one of the, if not THE hardest thing I've attempted to do. I have searched and researched for years. In the last 3 years, my community has lost 7 young men to suicide. I feel in my heart of hearts that Jordan Peterson should be required in Middle School and High School for our young ones. He has put into words what I have witnessed with my own eyes for now 27 years. I applaud this man and whoever made him. Whatever experiences he had to allow him to go on this journey of trying to understand the world and our place in it has indeed served its purpose. Wish I could get all my young men to see him.

The appeal of video games is the fact that they provide a controlled challenge. In real life a lot of goals/challenges are either highly difficult/uncertain or completely mundane/boring. There’s a reason people prefer to play a video game rather than apply for a high paying job or pick up and fold their clothes. The former has a highly uncertain success rate while the latter has zero chance for failure. Video games provide an intermediate challenge that doesn’t exist many places in real life.
@ElWolf70
@ElWolf70 6 жыл бұрын
marshallbs That's an interesting point of view, and it's one that makes sense, especially for those who play for a challenge. However, there are people who play to relax, or to experience a story, or to escape to another world, or even to learn. It's a very difficult thing to determine and categorize since there are so, so, so, so many variables.

I know you're probably being sarcastic. But honestly, the pro scene is almost entirely reliant on sponsor interest, and only the top 1% of players have a shot of achieving to that level. With the exception of long-standing eSports "traditions" like Starcraft and CS, most games have a relatively short lifespan (a few years tops), and it's almost exclusively a young person's endeavour. Ask yourself: if I obsessively throw 5-10k hours into my game of choice over the next few years but never attain any significant competitive achievements or wins, will the experience still have been worthwhile? To be truly excellent at any one thing, not only games, your life has to be a little unbalanced in some ways. The major difference there is that it's difficult to directly integrate anything you learn or accomplish from gaming into a future career for instance.

The main thing that young men get from video games, in my considered opinion, is simulated dominance and heroism. Young men absolutely _crave_ responsibility, prestige, and dominance, but they are starved of it from a very early age by a society that treats masculinity as highly suspect and mostly useless. Video games give you a goal and make you, the player, single-handedly responsible for realizing that goal - which is just the kind of challenge young men are hungry for. Progression in a video game releases all the same reward chemicals as solving a real-world problem, because _in the context of the game_ you are elevating your status. The fact that it's all a fleeting fantasy isn't something your brain particularly cares about, which is also why drug addiction happens.

But at a certain point of my life, during the first years of University,i was not really interested on a lot of subjects so i started playing and playing until i just avoided studying and than tests and finally i realized what i was doing, avoiding life. I absolutely can't say nothing bad about videogames because a lot of them (Uncharted, Battlefield etc..) meant a lot to me but now, as long as i have time, i firstly focus on my duty, then i play for a few hours (or minutes sometimes). As long as you enjoy them, as long as they make you feel better and entertain you, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong but using them as an escape from responsibilities and reality is just what i did and it's wrong..

Video games are a waste if you waste your life playing video games. Wasting your life is not inherent to video games but we can pretty clearly see that it is often a result of them. Be self-aware about why you're playing video games, is it genuinely important to you or are you trying not to notice that you're avoiding something you don't want to do by distracting yourself? Trust your own judgement but make sure you're asking the questions.

As a college dropout who's doing better than some grads, I can say that being intelligent and being educated are different. I'm a writer who's found fulfillment. As opposed to a lot of those Liberal Arts majors who complain about not having money. I'm far from rich. But I love what I do. I was going to college for a Computer Science major but the math was too much for me. But I made a good friend who helped me break my shell and I found a calling in writing. I'm not saying getting a Liberal Arts major is wrong. No. If it's something you're passionate about, do it. But it's not something that'll get you into a high paying career on it's own. So, my point is that there's a vast difference between knowledge and wisdom. The same is true about being intelligent and educated.

To play devil's advocate: "Video games have no consequences" - everything has a consequence. Every moment you spend playing a game is a moment you're not spending doing something else. Is it worth it? For me the answer is often yes, but certainly not always. "Nobody's forcing you to be good at it" - try telling that to the retards on voice chat in matchmaking when I don't have a minimum of several months of experience with the game to fall back on (and even then)! Of course, single player is something else. "Job/school limits your creativity" - I both agree and disagree. The regimented structure certainly isn't conducive to the highly idiosyncratic. But to a degree, I feel that some form of restriction is a necessary catalyst for my own creativity. It's a case of finding a way to "break the rules" - or efficient and innovative ways to accomplish a task within the constraints of the boundaries given. Give me a completely blank canvas with no rules or restrictions of any kind and I'll just kind of freeze up and be overwhelmed by all the possibilities. But I don't think I was like that as a young child, so it's possible I've adapted somehow, or maybe something has atrophied somewhere.
@ashleyjohansson230
@ashleyjohansson230 6 жыл бұрын
If assholes in voice chat hurts your feelings then you are mentally weak. Their opinions mean nothing since video games are not serious, its not like you have to be good at it in order to have a future career unless you are planning to be a pro MLG esports gamer. And the consequences thing isn't suppose to be taken literally. It has no consequences as in whatever you do in the video game itself has no consequences, like for example you play GTA and kill everyone and never even beat the main storyline, nothing will happen, whereas with school, you don't do the homework and do your own thing, there will be consequences. (Unless you play online and say certain things that are against the rules and can get you banned)

I used to grind 100 hours a week in MMORPGs to achieve the best. I learned discipline and the realization that If I commit that same dedication to anything in life I will achieve any goal I believe in, or die trying resolutely. Video games can be beautiful pieces of art you can engage in that will expand your cognitive abilities through unique genres and experiences. Figure out the worth and value in your time and use it to accomplish what you truly desire in life with no fear. Don’t let anything of less value and worth distract you from your dreams.

Beautiful. I am not sure how many people will understand it fully. Help yourself by shaking off beliefs and also throw away ego and/or wrong estimation of your health, to be depressed is in no way to be ashamed of. Almost everyone has been or may be, depressed at some point of time.

Well that ending sentence describes me perfectly, shame the video stopped there. Fortunately I've taken some baby steps recently through cold stressors in the shower and Hof breathing techniques, to getting out and slowly moderating my gaming. As a 21 yr, 50 hours isn't even half of what I've contributed to active screen time per week for almost a decade. I developed a sedentary lifestyle eased by the abuse of cannabis and my depressive cycle only deepened. This definitely helped me understand where I need to fundamentally start, since I haven't gone pro, and for sure have developed a pathologically false sense of purpose. Two nights ago I attended my second Celebrate Recovery session, hosted by a Christian organization locally, and opted for the chemical addiction sub-group for the reason that without a clear mind I wouldn't be able to accomplish any introspective work. But having raged for so many years at character models and turned to every unhealthy outlet I saw as an easy way out really has trapped me in a web of self-deceit. It's gona be a lot of hard work to rework and reprogram the neurons I've committed to aggressive thinking, an identity formed by pride, and my false sense of self righteousness.

Been through exactly what he mentioned at the end. I was fortunate to be very open minded about trying medication, because I believe most people are self medicating in some form or another. About 4 months on medication and they showed me how I was never really in control of all the negativity and suicidal thoughts. That was 4 years ago and I haven't been on medication since because I haven't really needed it. So it's true that for some people, they can really fix you up. No reason to feel guilty or weak for needed to fix your brain.

I find joy in video games, I don't know if it's escapism but I would be quite happy if I could play them 'til I die. However I would love a family, a good income, a good career and having other fun in life but I think I will never hit rock bottom so long as I can play my games and have income to do so and survive comfortably. Life is about being happy in my opinion so if you do something that makes you happy without hurting other people financially or physically good on you, at least you're enjoying life.
@AirWolf2301
@AirWolf2301 6 жыл бұрын
For me it's pure escapism... if I didn't have games I probably wouldn't bother with anything. I see no motivation, no happiness and noting good in my life except the next twist in a good game. I don't even do it to be happy. I didn't play a game that made me happy for years now... it's pure "do something or go insane" and games are the easiest "do something", specially when you wrap your hand around a good story.

It gets heavy when you sit there in complete realization of everything you’ve done. All the bad and evil you’ve committed. Some you got caught for and some you didn’t. What’s the cure for a guilty conscience? How can I get out of this hole when I dig it without leaving steps to get back out? In all honestly this isn’t for pity or for attention. I’d rather nobody comment on this. I simply just want somebody else who’s feeling the same way as me to not feel so alone. Being alone in this state is detrimental. Its shredding away at sanity. So if you’re like me, I am so so very sorry! But we have to get help. We cannot linger on what’s been done. We must strive for the happiness we see others experience. There’s got to be that for us as well. Right?
@Sebastian_Hahn

Imo you still need to earn it on some level. That doesn't have to mean giving your life away. Just stand up for what you believe is right, what you believe is ethical and good for society in the long term. Even if it's just the occasional comment, in person or online, it helps; we're currently in the middle of an ongoing cultural and economic war of a near global scale; and the outcome will decide the state of humanity in the future, if there is a future. Don't wallow in shame or guilt, try to discover solutions that would prevent the development of the kind of negative circumstances or behaviors which cause you to feel ashamed or guilty; in you and others, and advocate for those solutions when you think it's appropriate. Or that's what I do, anyway. If that doesn't work for you, that's fine too. (ps, if you do take this route, don't let it be your only defining feature; make time to improve yourself, pursue goals, and develop skills which allow you to feel confident in yourself). (pps, you said you wanted nobody to reply. wish granted; you're welcome.)

balance. i just started working out regularly again. and it really helps me. my mental health is skyrocketing. and as a result my depression is dwindling. yet also i game. not like before but drastically i have cut back. and i enjoy playing more because i know i did what i had to. use it as a reward. not a crutch like i used to. gaming is a fantastic form of entertainment. NOTHING is more engaging. but nothing will ever beat staying healthy physicality and mentally.... also i have lowered my THC consumption. as i feel it is not benefiting me anymore. but that could be a result of me working out more. trust me. exercise regularly and you will know what i mean. to all those who never exercise. do it in time youre cognitive functions will be sharper. you will feel alive. im saying this because im the few who cares for the world and its people. cheers. and game on!

Video games for me is simply escapism. Like an album, like a bar, like any recreational pursuit. It can be social too. Being a gamer for years I honestly believe it has helped me develop skills like problem solving, reading, forced me to develop math skills, technical abilities and countless more which I have been able to apply in my everyday life. As with any pursuit, as long as it is controlled and you realise it for what it is and done in moderation, therefore not effecting your relationships or responsibilities then whats the harm? None. And what I do in my spare time, if not hurting anyone is nobodys dog gone business.
