I’m stunned at the notion of the lawyer being more worried about representing an innocent client, in the sense that I never thought about it from that angle before. Sometimes the blockages in my own reasoning and understanding of things seem so immense I’m amazed at my own inability to notice them. Brilliant conversation, as always.

Francis A Schaeffer wrote about the difference between forensic guilt - guilt in law or fact - and guilt feelings and the difficulty of distinguishing between the two. Sometimes we feel guilty when we’re not and sometimes we don’t feel guilty when we are.
@ashleygatewood
@ashleygatewood 9 ай бұрын
There is a difference between feeling guilty when we're actually innocent of the hurt we’ve experienced in the past, and actively decimating relationship bonds in the present to compensate for our pain. We're not always to blame for what happened to us in the past. We are responsible for what we keep doing repeatedly in the present to try and relive a different experience. It never works to heal the soul/mind and only creates distance and more hurt. Dismissive, anxious avoidant attachment styles hold kindness & secure emotional connections in contempt. They will burn relentlessly, the beautiful connections they may have formed with others to keep from being hurt by a phantom in their past that haunts them. ‘Kill the bond first, before it kills me.’ This is exaggerated reaction to vulnerability. They won't stop until the bond is ravaged and they feel freedom from a faux abandonment fear. The entire cycle is in vain. Only then do they sit over the ash heap they've induced experiencing excruciating waves of guilt over their actions. This just needn’t be experienced. One has to arrest one's own behavior in the present to stop this recurring inevitable outcome with those we care for. The classic, ‘I’ll push you away to test your loyalty.’ Yet, it only comes across as cruel. This is unnecessary destruction and negativity. It’s cruelty born from hurt, which is understandable, yes, but not acceptable, beneficial or conducive to healthy relationships. People with healthy attachment behavior will leave. Unless the counterpart makes a reasonable resolution to change their behavior. The good news is, personality type and attachment type aren't the same thing. Whereas personality can't be changed much, attachment type which is malleable can be changed. If the Insecure attachment connects with a Secure attachment, then inner volatility will subside to a significant degree. The insecure has to make a choice to ‘aim up’ and stop willfully wrecking the bond (to prove they won’t be abandoned), then the Secure will stabilize the Insecure attachment style and the volatility will subside. Work on it enough and the insecure behavior will be replaced with secure. It’s a beautiful transformation because it doesn’t depend on another person longterm to establish the behavior. Only in the beginning. It can be internalized so no codependency is underlying it. This is one way to heal the turmoil of distrust and recurring bouts of guilt over self sabotage due to trauma in the past we are innocent of, and present behaviors for which we are responsible. That's the best way I know how to put it, not being academically inclined.

Unfortunately, most of us are put in the position of making judgments all the time. I was in combat in Vietnam, and later, I was a police officer. In both instances, I had to make judgments, and some of them were snap judgments, which had eternal consequences. Especially in war, a soldier is put into a position where he has to make many such decisions. When I was a police officer, a call went out for assistance from an officer who was under fire at a gas station located near an interstate highway. By the time I arrived, I found the officer bleeding on the ground, but alive, and the offender laying dead on the station driveway. As it turned out, the officer had been shot twice, but he had emptied his 18-round magazine into the offender. I gave assistance to the wounded officer, and later, had to testify in his defense because he was charged with two counts of manslaughter. Thankfully, he was acquitted. Knowing him, though, he carried the guilt over killing another person over the rest of his life. He felt guilty over killing another person, for the rest of the time I knew him. Thanks for the video, Dr. Peterson!

Shot twice and felt the need to fully unload into the other person, you know, just to make sure they're toast... I don't pretend to even guess to understand the situation, but aren't police especially trained to handle such situations with necessary, but minimal, force? The acquittal doesn't surprise me, just look at the number of people who are killed by police when a more subtle approach would suffice. That just goes to show how messed up the US legal system is, inherited from our own, just as messed up and unjust "justice" system...

Theologians are professionals at making followers feel guilt. From the book “Twisted Scriptures,” by Mary Alice Chrnalogar, published in 1997. Tricks to Keep You Controlled A Guilt-Edged Sword The key for gaining maximum control over someone’s conscience is to influence the person to study and accept certain beliefs. Then, if the person fails to follow those beliefs, a powerful feeling of guilt will be the result. Leaders get you to believe that they don’t interpret the Bible but just “teach what is in the Bible”-making the Bible synonymous with their interpretations.

As well, looking for 5 good moral theist questions for atheists/agnostics. #1 You see a child drowning in a shallow pool and notice a person just watching that is able to save the child with no risk to themselves but is not, is that persons non action moral? #2 If you go to save the child, the man tells you to stop as he was told it was for the greater good, but he does not know what that is, do you continue to save the child? #3 Is it an act of justice to punish innocent people for the crimes of others? #4 If you were able to stop it and knew a person was about to grape a child would you stop it? #5 Would you consider a parent who put their kids in a room with a poison fruit and told the kids not to eat it but then also put the best con artist in the room with the children knowing the con artist will get the kids to eat the fruit and the parent does nothing to stop it a good parent?

@@Joshua-Adam I'm an Atheist and I feel guilt ... but I don't feel guilt because of what I believe is a non-existent god. I feel guilt because I take responsibility for having caused harm to other humans, which I believe was a result of my own self-centered behavior. If Jordan felt guilt, my guess is, it would be because he was worried that he had offended "God" ... hadn't "repented enough TO "GOD" and worried what "GOD" was going to do to him to make him suffer for his evil behavior. “I act as if God exists, and I’m terrified he might.” ~ Jordan Peterson

Idk if what I’m about to say is helpful or “right”, but it’s what flooded into my brain when I read your comment so I’m taking it as divine inspiration-I hope it’s received in the spirit it was given:) My thoughts are this-you cut yourself off from friends bc of your guilt, presumably to protect yourself from future guilt if a similar situation occurred again, AND to protect ppl from you, since you perceive yourself as a “betrayer”. Without knowing the situation I can’t really say much more about it, but the one thing that really struck me is that, by cutting yourself off from friends and relationships, not only are you denying yourself absolution, and the ability to trust yourself (bc I’m sure you’re not a “betrayer”, betraying someone is an action, it’s not YOU), but you’re also denying others the gift of having a friend who strives for honesty and integrity in that friendship bc you understand how painful it is not to. If it was/is truly that painful for you, and I believe you when you say it is, then commit to honesty and integrity 100% in all your relationships, but have those relationships. Otherwise, you’re betraying yourself, your own worth, and signaling to yourself that you can’t be trusted with others. That’s a terrible thing to tell yourself, and even worse to believe it, bc it doesn’t HAVE to be true. You fear friendships after that experience, and I understand that, but what you should fear even more is withholding yourself and the light you posses from the rest of the world-THAT would be tragic. It’s fine to feel guilty over something done in the past, we all have those stories, but living life without friends you can trust, and who can trust you, solves nothing, the only thing you get from it is punishment you most likely don’t deserve, all while denying others the impact you could have in their lives. I can’t figure out how to be more articulate about this, but I hope it makes sense. So please cut yourself some slack, forgive yourself for past sins, and try again. You owe yourself and others that much. Best of luck, I really hope you can trust yourself enough to put yourself out there :)

The True Origin of Christ: Colossians 1 is the true origin of Jesus. Not Genesis 1 or John 1; these chapters explain the creation of the earth and the heavens. Jesus was made in the image of God and he is “the firstborn of every creature/creation.” In order to be a creature or creation, you must have a Creator. Col 1:18 further states that Jesus is the “firstborn from the dead,” meaning that Jesus was given life. Jesus is the only creation that God made by His own hands, making him the only begotten Son of God (begotten means “to give rise to, bring about, or create”). After God created Jesus, Jesus then created all things that are in heaven and on earth; this made God, the Father of Jesus, pleased that all fullness would dwell in His Son (Col 1:19). Jesus has the Spirit of God, which makes him eternal. Those who have the same spirit will live eternally with Jesus and the Father.

Yes. My dad was a Lawyer. I think he told me that Lawyer ethics says that they shouldn't represent clients they know are guilty. So lawyers seem to be squirming their way around this ethic. Criminals are out on the streets thanks to their greed.

what is the good purpose of pointing out and lighting what is bad? there are people that want to do good. there are places that are welcoming. there is truth and genuine compassion for us all where we can find it. i hate more than you.

Psalms 10:4 "The wicked through the pride(: a function of self-worth, a way of acting that will not lower itself to perform a healthy relationship and standard of love.) of their countenance will not seek God he is not in all their thoughts." So that in all their thoughts there is no remembering of the things he has done for them nor an imagination for the things he can do for them. See Hebrews 11:1 and 6, Read the King James Bible and pray for wisdom.

As a boy, Jordan was relentlessly guilty of triggering his horrendously emotionally damaged father's internal power struggles and incomplete developmental tasks with his own father. Mikhaila said "I am so full of guilt, I cannot take any more!" Mikhaila is guilty of being a human being with homeostatic and developmental needs. Those needs are completely contrary to Jordan and Tammy's perceptual filters created by the unconscious likes vs. dislikes of their parents. Jordan says that emotional intelligence does not exist because it is just agreeableness. Emotional intelligence is the ability to translate emotional communication into cause and effect. Emotional intelligence is synonymous with being a competent parent. Jordan and Tammy's relentless misinterpretations and contradictions of the adjustment and self-regulation that Mikhaila needed to stabilize caused her to accumulate emotional incompletions and a long list of autoimmune diseases.
